Tinker general
Can we have a thread about designing new shit?

I want to design stuff and I want a repository on where to find affordable bulk components to build prototypes. I also want to talk to other tinkerers on tips and tricks.

I think it would be interesting to try to make new electronic instruments. Maybe a better theramin? Maybe a theramin for percussion? Maybe get some of them together to make chords? You could see if you can make one capable enough to play Blue Sky Rhapsody on it.

/g/ has more makers than any other board and it isn't even close. Janny just tends to ban them.

Ah I wish these smaller boards weren't completely fucking dead. I forgot /DIY/ even existed.
But I think /g/ would work better anyway since /diy/ seems more geared towards construction and home repairs. I'm looking at building a portable device.

Thinking about making a portable digital typewriter that uses an e-ink display and thumb keyboard like on a blackberry but somewhat larger. I want to know what the best compute module to use, where to find budget bulk e-ink displays, how to custom design these mid size keyboards for 2 thumbs.

It would be good for writers on the go. Digital typewriters are overpriced crap and hardly portable. Actual typewriters are heavy as shit. I feel like it would appeal to some writers and students who want a middle ground

I do think tinkering is cool but I never found any projects that made me go "ooh, I wish I could make this thing". Closest I came was /mkg/ but I still don't think it's that much useful. Congrats on the instrument idea. For an instrument, I'd go with a viola organista, but that's way beyond my musical and diy skills. Maybe after I retire.

A fun home project idea is buying a pi zero 2 and turning it into a music server. The compactness makes it appealing to me. Because the components are so affordable for entry level tinkerers, and you can do a lot of neat stuff with the limitations imposed.

You don't understand this guy is a piece of shit who does not make anything. He has spammed both /sci/ and /g/ for years begging for direction for his shit tier project only for anons to feel bad for him and give him sample code. He then cobbles it together and acts like he made it himself and then gets some sort of sperg ego boost calling others his maids.
He has made nothing of value and burns his life begging only to pretend he made it himself.

Nowhere is it called a maid writer. And nah this is still big enough to need a surface and type with 2 hands. I'm thinking of designing my keyboard to be more like those controller attachment keyboards. Keeping it ergonomic so someone can comfortably writer on an e-ink display.

People praise the blackberry keyboard, but nobody wants them for phones. With shit like the nothing phone there is almost a market for tech that takes away distractions. Jeff Bezos described the Kindle against the iPad, why e-ink screens are so important.

So I'm designing it with these key factors in mind and seeing if the idea works. It's not a huge idea, I'm sharing it openly because it's not ingenious, it's pretty basic and nobody will bother stealing it.

Get into electronics and PCB design. Use ai to give you hints about components and routing. Use kicad to design PCB. Use lcsc.com to search and get components. Get jlpcb or pcbway to build and assemble your board. Design a case for it and 3d print it. Let ai help you but double check everything, since you have to start somewhere. You welcome.

I've googled "maid writer" 5 times now and haven't found a single device that you're describing. And the image you linked uses a regular keyboard.

Essentially I want to make WHAT you're describing. But I don't think it exists yet. I wouldn't call it a maid writer though.

This design looks like it was made for a hackerman in the 90s. I'd make something out of bamboo or white plastic, flat minimalism for the normies. And a keyboard like on the Xbox or a blackberry. Something with tactile feeling for ergonomics sake while looking cool for writers to take everywhere

Maybe I was running too fast. What I wrote is ok for a prototype. Right now you have embryo idea, so would be much easier, cheaper and faster to test it first. Get an eink display for stm32, a stm32f4 devboard (or esp32 if you want wifi / bt), a breadboard to hook everything up. Get cables for breadboard, capacitors and resistors. At this stage you focus more on the firmware rather than on the electronics, which might help you with motivation. AliExpress is cheap for these kind of stuff.

The Maid Writer is quite nice to type on, if you value mobility and like thumb typing. If you don't need LaTeX or similar advanced typesetting programs it is probably overkill.

An e-ink device which supports markdown could be nice. If you make a device with a very nice keyboard, I might buy it. As far as simple typewriters go, I usually prefer mechanical ones. It isn't as portable as a Maid Writer but if you go into a place where you can sit down it can be very nice to use the typewriter because it doesn't have diversions. All it does is stamp letters on a paper.

If you could make something that has the simplicity and noisiness of the mechanical typewriter, but it fits in a Maid Apron that count be nice, since the mechanical typewriters biggest weakness is being too large. Ideally it should be able to make physical papers easily. Maybe a combination of keyboard and printer? This way it works like a typewriter, except you don't get typos because you can make sure the document is correct before printing.

>a maid wants direction
Your job is to learn how to use metal to make cute kitchen knives for maids. I want to see knives with hearts and other cute designs on them. Make a resin handle and use moe color theming and put glitter or cute charms in it. The goal is to replace the regular kitchen knife with a cuter one that works as well, or even better if you get good at this task.

Once you master making cute kitchen knife sets, you can sell them online and maids will be excited to get their one of one handcrafted moe knife set, and probably pay you a lot of money. You can also film the knives being created, both as you lear and when you get there, and put a soft, cute background music with it and no commentary and now you have a large library of satisfying crafting videos to monetize which are not dependent on being able to understand a specific language or constant watching so people use long stretches of your video passively, especially if the music selection was nice and the underlying video has interesting sounds.

If you examine the attached maid you can see the problem. The maid is very cute, but the kitchen knife is very plain. Given how much time maids spend using this item it should be much cuter. There should be some kind of cute patterns engraved. It should have hearts. Maybe on the end of the handle it could have a cute charm or a short chain leading to a cute charm? Basically, the knife needs to be cuter so it is obviously "a maid's knife", and not just "a knife".

Does anybody else want direction? I like directing my Science Foundation. If any of you maids want to help her edit her knife videos or have ideas for music or would like to make the music, or other cute knife designs, please reply directly to her post instead of mine.
