Women prefer men that are assertive and can be protectors. Nerds are typically shy, introverted, and not very assertive. Women do fall for them but only after a lot of thinking about it. Naturally they just don't find men like that interesting.
Comparatively, men don't really care about women's personality other than that they are able to be a caregiver, but practically any female personality can fit that mold. "Negative" traits like being nerdy, sad, lonely, etc. are seen to be endearing by men because we view women as something to protect, so your target of protection being weak just makes your desire to protect it stronger. On the flipside, when you're a woman looking for a protector, you don't appreciate men who are less capable of protecting you more, you just find them less attractive.
