They're really just stealing 10% from the shareholders.
Now if the US government bails out Intel and gets some shares in return that would be fair game.

The $8.9 billion investment will be funded by grants from the US Chips and Science Act and Secure Enclave program that had previously been extended but not yet paid, Intel said, confirming a report by Bloomberg News.
>Together with the $2.2 billion in Chips Act money that Intel already received, the investment totaled $11.1 billion.
$2.2 billion as grants. assets on the balance sheet.
$8.9 billion as stocks. liabilities on the balance sheet.
originally it was $11.1 all in grants.
so current US government turned $8.9 billion of Intel's assets to liabilities.

Sleepy Joe already promised Intel $10B or whatever under the CHIPS plan, under the condition they build fabs. Intel need the cash, but can't build the fabs, or it would be non-viable. tldr, they need a bailout. And US/Trump still has to pretend Intel is a viable functional company otherwise, thus 10% not 100%, altho they were demanding TSMC take over 50% last week.

Intel's only viable move is to diverge it's fabs just like AMD did. The fabs are literally bleeding them dry. tens of hundreds of billions have been wasted on them and R&D over the last 10 years with little progress.
They even have conceded this by moving their latest nodes to TSMC and it looks like they will keep using TSMC. It makes absolutely no sense to keep these fabs under their portfolio, but I'm guessing "someone" above them is forcing them at this point.

$10B is also 10% of Intel's $105B total equity.
So that 10% is clearly not a coincidence and one could even argue it's fair.
But what Trump is forgetting is that $10B was supposed to be an incentive to build fabs in America despite higher cost and lower productivity of American labor.
So if companies have to give up equity to get CHIPS money the incentive is gone and you might as well just cancel it and accept China producing the chips the US military needs.

this appears to be the point of contention.
I dont think they do, I suspect Intel just grabbed the CHIPS cash at the time, then discovered whatever they had agreed to was non-viable. But now they have the cash planned and are fucked otherwise. I cant see why Trump has them bouncing around like a hot potato otherwise, last week its 'TSMC, buy 50% of Intel', this week its 'US is taking 10% of Intel' - none of this makes sense unless:
>near bankruptcy
>cant build promised fabs, or would be non-viable to do so
>need CHIPS cash anyway, or go titsup
The 10% stake is just a US guarantee for a(n unwilling) loan now with none of the promised fabs being built, imo. They'll probably still be back needing moar bailouts next year tho And so on.

Okay, sure. Partially nationalize a failing US chip-maker because it's essential for economic and national security, while the fucking oil industry just sits there raping our own natural resources for private profit.
I, my family, my town, my whole state could be living like Saudi princes off of the boon from what they drill up from our land, but that would mean some shareholder in his late-80s can't continue to compound his Swiss bank account that generates enough monthly interest to build a space program.
Oh, also we have to privatize schools, the post office, prisons, rail systems, hospitals, health insurance, internet service, and fucking water. But god forbid we let the free market give Intel what's coming to them until they innovate or get their shit together.
Iβm confused, how does this get them out of the CHIPs Act. Is it just like Trump signing an EO? Or did the act have some sort of out clause? Cause otherwise I canβt see how this would dissolve the agreement. Would using an EO to nullify the agreement under the act even be possible?

its (imo) basically just saving them from bankruptcy, which would (probably) have occurred had they either been forced to fulfill their obligations under the CHIPS grant terms, or repaid that. tldr, they cant do what they agreed to, but their fucked without the cash, TSMC (and everyone else sane) had no interest in taking them over - USG taking equity was the easiest hit.

Intel is not near bankruptcy lol. They have well over 150B in assets with only ~90B in liabilities, and on top of that they have over ~20B in cash or short term investments. They had 6 bad quarters (and likely 2 more to come) after a decade+ of making ham over fist in net income.
Nor would they ever hit bankruptcy. The US will never allow it and this confirms it, and Intel going belly up has far more consequences for everyone else. It's not even in AMD's best interest to let Intel disappear (nor would it. The absolute worse case is someone buys Intel. You are delusional if you think it'll just disappear)

I'm not saying it isn't wrong and US citizens didn't get to vote to save Intel by using tax dollars but this in exchange for Intel getting everything they were promised government assistance for that would've gone to them is better than anything else when the money had been allocated already to go to them and with less preconditions.

But I'm talking to people who probably think every random "communist" regime is literally communist in practice so I had to say "not even". There's no strong vertical control, no familiar control (most of them are public companies), not real financial integration like in the past.
Compare Samsung with Mitsubishi and the metastasis of companies, many core areas forced to be public (MHI, Nikon).

It's much much much worse than actual capitalism. As is, currency doesn't function a currency should function in that it is not a functional store of value. The currency constantly depreciates so asset prices constantly increase. Poor investments are frequently just be bailed out by inflation alone let alone with zombie corporations like intel. This is the worst of every world. The worst of capitalism, the worst of state run economies rolled into one. At least in capitalism malinvestment is punished and things become more efficient. In this we just reward bad behavior with government bailouts. The dollar is backed by military force surrounding oil and a consumer slave population alone.

Money isn't a store of value. It's not even really bought or sold. The artifically low interest rates that are lower than the inflation rate are used to take out a loan against current assets to then buy more assets that then appreciate faster than the apr of the loan because it's lower than the inflation rate. This is central planning around fake interest rates and fake money.

Yes a government having a stake in a company is a regulatory problem. But do you know what isn't? How it happened in the first place in this case.

No.
Just because AMD decided to to it doesnβt mean itβs a good idea for intel.
A decade ago everyone was saying what a *mistake* it was for AMD to spin-off their fab.
It was other things.
Also, not all parts of the chip *need* 3 nm, even AMD doesnβt do that. Made easier with chiplets.
