Proton is just a translation layer, no? It just translates OS and graphics API calls, but it's not going to be that easy on ARM shit. The ARM CPU actually cannot run an x86 game's code, so you'll need something more complicated than Proton by far.

Proton is an combination of translation layers. It's possible to translate x86_64 to ARM using Rosetta. GTAV is playable on the Mac M4 right now. You shouldn't plan on "supporting mac" by targeting a million translation layers, but it's cool that we have something that works for legacy games

I don't really care about the operating system. Macos feels like a downgraded Ubuntu Touch, but all it the computer needs to do is run IDEs and compilers and Macos can do this. The main problem with MacBooks is that they are not really mobile. They are large and heavy and have unimpressive hardware for the space and weight they take up. If Apple made a handheld with a physical keyboard which can run compilers and be used while standing or walking without using peripherals then that could be nice.

So far, the hardware is not excellent. Even with battery saver always enabled battery life sucks. The screen is fine, so is every other device these days though. The OS though is a train wreck. Being locked out of any real filesystem and having to jump through hoops to do anything. How the keyboard is that bad is beyond me. The over reliance on gestures to do shit gets old fast. The very poor implementation of multitasking. The fact that Apple said that's good enough and shipped it in that sorry state gives no confidence the rest of their products aren't a complete shitshow.
