What the fuck. This has to be precisely backwards. To me "side projects" just means some program/whatever you want to develop that you personally use on your own. So you directly benefit from the time you put into it. Who the fuck actually enjoys leetcode and why would anyone do this unless there was some kind of financial reward (i.e. you pass the interview and get the job).

Coding for fun has always been a meme.
It's something you pretend to do to impress dumb employers, or express submission to smart employers. These days, only Indians do it.

Coding in free time isn't necessarily for fun though. For a lot of us, it's our best shot at escaping 9-5 drudgery. Especially if we lack the social skills to navigate office politics. Even socially skilled programmers tend to fail at it, because it's next to impossible to switch gears during work between focusing on code to interacting with other people. If a coworker interrupts me at 2 in the afternoon, after I've been hyperfocused on something for hours, I can barely process and respond verbally.

I'm always involved with some personal project here and there. Right now I'm setting up old and new hardware to work together as a home lab of dedicated nodes to self-host stuff to me in an efficient way with elegant engineering, customized pipelines, etc. It's the kind of rewarding that is very different than just seeing money entering your bank account or plain social validation. I feel sorry for neurotypicals.
