It's one of the true successors to JPG. Webp does okay but sometimes it produces files bigger than the JPG so it's gotten a lot of criticism for that.

Also JPG XL not only replaces JPG but PNG and GIF as well so it's a pretty cool image format if your CPU isn't a potato (ie i5-8400 or better). In some cases AVIF can do better but JPEG XL could honestly work for like 70-90% of your image compression needs depending on what sources they are. AVIF would be supplemental desu.

Here is my personal take on things: lossless compression can become so good that lossy is no longer used. Which is a big deal for the internet because people share images and eventually this makes them degrade in quality.

1080p screenshots are one important example. A normal PNG takes several MBs of space and sometimes it exceeds 4 MBs which means you can't even upload them to 4chan. oxiPNG can do a little better but Webp/JPEG XL can achieve around 1 MB file sizes in lossless mode which is fucking nuts.

Not for me. The program I use to manages images takes 10 fucking centuries to open jpegxl files (uses the standard library not a custom hack job). webp opens instantly. 9800X3D.

It's better because jpeg xl can create lossless images that can load progressively which webp can't. However exponentially higher encoding and decoding complexity is ultimately a horrible price you must pay for that. Realistically jpeg xl won't be ready for mass adoption especially for high res images until like 2030. It was the same problem for webp when it came out in 2010, even if software support had been rushed the CPUs of that time struggled horribly to decode and encode webp especially lossless webp.

I don't get it. Jpeg xl supports animations and more importantly more than 256 colors that GIF doesn't. How is it not a good replacement for GIF? Like yeah a fucking webm will be smaller in file size but say you don't want to butcher the quality then jpeg xl is much better than webm.

jpeg-xl is abysmal for animations because it's wildly inefficient AND it has shit support. it's an image format with a shitty, primitive animation support bolted on top. jxl on its own has pretty shitty support but animated jxl support is almost nonexistent.
avif is vastly better for animations, since it's effectively a video codec, but again - animated avif support is pretty poor (though not quite as bad as jxl)
if you want animation-displayed-as-image just use webp. if you want an animation that doesn't strictly need to be an image, use literally any other codec, even ancient h264 is vastly superior to jxl
