When you attempt archival quality lossy it's more like 50%. That's because webp is limited to 4:2:0 chroma sub sampling which sacrifices color resolution in an image for better compression efficiency at low file sizes.

Essentially Webp ONLY works okay when the existing JPEG itself is 4:2:0 and not 4:4:4. Also it needs to be significantly huge in file size to not justify a lossless jpeg xl compression.

Lossy webp is fucking cursed.

So on a tech related note OP' screen shart could have been saved as a lossless webp or lossless jpeg xl with both saving astronomical amounts of space.

Here is my personal take on things: lossless compression can become so good that lossy is no longer used. Which is a big deal for the internet because people share images and eventually this makes them degrade in quality.

1080p screenshots are one important example. A normal PNG takes several MBs of space and sometimes it exceeds 4 MBs which means you can't even upload them to 4chan. oxiPNG can do a little better but Webp/JPEG XL can achieve around 1 MB file sizes in lossless mode which is fucking nuts.
