I just had the displeasure of installing linux for the first time in 8 or so years. As I get older, I understand Applefags more and more. Their shit just works.

That none of the installers can handle hidpi displays properly still is frustrating.

Too bad Apple hardware is locked down, soldered on chinkware garbage. If they sold the OS separately and let me install it on a custom PC build I would unironically switch to Mac.

This but unironically. Someone send an email to Tim Apple and ask him about selling just the os without hardware.

I bet they could make a fuckload more selling it even for as much as $500 a pop (or equally shitty subscription), without tipping the balance away from Mac hardware buyers. Many, perhaps even most, users would bolt at the prospect of having install an OS for once in their lives.

The hardware is locked down for a reason. Developing the hardware and software in tandem specifically to work together is the best way to ensure you get something that actually works and works well.

Apple figured this out four decades ago but tinkertroons still think they're smarter than them.

Arch is fine on hidpi. You can set the font to be 4k 20 inches compatible.

It never gets any better, does it?
Last time I tried Ucuntu (22.04 or something), the installer just froze with a blank screen. Tried again, did it again. On the third try, it let me partition the disk - then went blank and froze. Only on the fourth run-through did it actually install.
This is supposed to be a "flagship" distro - yet it brought back bad memories of installing OS/2 2.0 on unsupported hardware in 1992.

Installing Debian today. I'll let you know how it goes.

So far, the only bad/confusing thing has been finding the right image file. They do not do a good job explaining what each image file is. The "manifest" they say is supposed to explain what each image does hardly goes into any detail and leaves a lot of lingo/acronyms in the mirror directory unexplained.

And the "netinst" image that supposedly installs the minimal base system and then downloads the rest from the net wasn't even in the mirror but instead linked out from a random nested help page. There was a folder in the mirror with several versions of "netboot". But are those the same as "netinst"? Who the fuck knows??? The installation guide also said normal installations have multiple CD isos with GBs of data, but the downloadable CD isos seem to be mutually exclusive one-off versions consisting of about 100MB or less total.

The only thing I seem to consistently have issues with in both of my distro experiences, both mint cinnamon and arch kde, is this really weird inability to click a window into fullscreen and the visual window actually raises to the top of the page. The mouse and inputs for the monitor treat it as if it were full screen but graphically it doesn't look like it.

Nah, I'm gonna do it. And there's nothing you can do to stop me.

Also
>Shitty documentation is the end user's fault
>Pic related is supposed to be self-explanatory
>netinst image not being available in the mirror of official instance media is le good!
Whatever you say bud.

But really, every other part of the install guide has been pretty good. This one (important) piece is just poorly explained for some reason. Even stranger is that the install guide says it's written with the assumption that the reader knows nothing about the Linux kernel or Debian installation, yet the documentation on selecting image media presupposes both. But don't worry, after I install I'll contribute actually good descriptions.

Twas easy as long as you are able to figure out what the correct installation instance is. It even detected the wifi adapter on my chink laptop and let me download all of the packages without any workarounds needed. Took like 15 minutes once my laptop got here. Even a retard can do it on chink hardware it seems.
