Laptops are over
>go to local supermarket to buy a cheap laptop
>what you find is a plasticky and flimsy CoPilot plus laptop with a Snapdragon CPU
>literally a smartphone that Microsoft and friends are controlling remotely for you
>2 USB ports and an HDMI port, not even an Ethernet port

It's over bros. Back in the day I got an Acer Extensa for 299 euros and it had everything

The only decent laptops are MacBook Pro laptops. Even flagship windows laptops that cost thousands have a shit plastic chassis

Don't want to start new thread for such a shit question but trying to help a broke friend out with a laptop. What's the absolute minimum needed to stream Netflix, watch a bit of YouTube and play the sims? Would a new pos like this cut it?

I concur good frog poster. After using laptops for nearly two decades for work and studying, and now I've reverted back NEETdom and claiming disability (self-inflicted), I will be using a desktop PC with peripherals.

Or would a second hand bigger brand be better?

They're not big anymore. I have a recent thinkpad and it's much smaller than the last laptop I owned. They have a slim model that even smaller but I didn't get it because it has soldered RAM.

Thinkpad quality has gone down since the good old days but they're still much better than anything else on the market in the $300 range. Fuck buying over priced Apple garbage or what is basically a tablet like OP is talking about.

Buy the newer thing. The poorfags with their Bush era stinkpads don't get anything done.

I have an HP Elitebook 8760w from 2011.

It has a discrete GPU, 16 GB of RAM, an i7 processor, two SSD's, every port imaginable, good display...

I have no idea why I'd buy a new one if not for more portability. But it's crazy how 15-year-old laptops are still powerful enough because modern laptops are so weak

I remember getting some 400€ acer laptop when I was a teen and it was good enough to play cs go and other low end online games with my friends and that's all I needed.
Doing the same today would be nearly impossible, the minimum sys requirements are absurdly high just like the cost for any decent laptop.
I really do feel like the golden era of tech and gaming is long gone and will never come back.

do not in under any circumstance buy a laptop with eMMC storage, especially on a Windows laptop.
I've seen so many issues online and in person of people getting these drives and them just stop working.
Personally I would not invest money in a computer that has anything under an i3 or Ryzen 3.

This.
Another thing I hate about modern laptops is the build quality.
When typing on a modern laptop, the chassis bends and feels like it's going to break just from the pressure of my fingers alone.
Laptops back in the day were sturdy. Of course they were also heavier but I don't want my laptop feeling flimsy af.

She might be able to get a bit more money sorted. Buying new gets you a warranty and support etc so would this have any merit?

You can get some fairly good deals if you look, especially at refurbished/outlet/outgoing models.
What you want to look for is a low price obviously, $200 is usually a sweet spot, a decent cpu like at least an i3 or ryzen 3, avoid celeron and pentium, and a model where you can upgrade ram and ssd cheap and easy when you need to. These laptops usually come with unpopular specs like 8 gb ram and 128 gb ssd, but it's not particularly hard or expensive to upgrade them. Most of them has like 4 or 8 gb soldered and one slot where you easily can put in a 16 or 32 gb stick for 20 gb or 36 gb total ram, and a 1 tb ssd nvme is not particularly expensive either, and you don't have to make these changes right away.
You can find youtube videos on how to open laptops easily, and if they're upgradable or not. You might be unlucky and get some that have very tight screws or something like that, I just switched ram and ssd on a hp victus gaming laptop and that was hell, but it worked fine.
