Yeah, it's far from perfect. It gets stuck on some pages, on others it makes the text unreadable (usually when two of the default colors are too close to each other).

But I've been too lazy to switch from it, even though there are several other extensions that do the same thing.

There are several of them. Midnight Lizard is the one I want to try first, I believe it's the most recommended. Then there's "Dark Background and Light text" or whatever it's called, but that's mostly abandoned. UltraDark is another one that I've seen shilled. And there are probably many others, it's not that hard to invert some colors.

At the same time, Dark Reader works well enough 99% of the time which I never bothered to change it or even to learn its functions properly, I only just found out about the keyboard shortcut (default Alt+Shift+D).

Maybe it's a matter of getting used to it. Or maybe color/light sensitivity differs between individuals. Because I certainly don't care what others think about my monitor colors, least of all do I want to be edgy.

This got me thinking though, maybe my screen is too bright on default light mode and that's why I prefer dark mode.

At the bottom. Light eyes are the lack of pigment - it's a similar condition to being bald.
People who have dark eyes can actually get light eyes (any color they want) by simply removing that pigment.
But people with light eyes can never get dark eyes. This is a scientific and natural occurring hierarchy within eye colors.

I have green eyes and the most light-sensitive eyes of anyone I know. Most days I squint when I'm outside, even on overcast days.

dark mode is a meme. the issue isn't brightness, it's contrast between elements. the lazy dark modes usually just invert the colors and it ends up being the exact same issue. light mode at least doesn't make my eyes tired.

Funny, I just installed this the other day since I switched to a 27in 1440p display after using 17in laptops my whole life and the text clarity on the monitor is terrible

I find it's ability to change the brightness and contrast, font, and font boldness really useful, but I wish there was a similar extension that went further with font customization, like font size, being able to change the contrast/brightness of text seperately from the site's other css formatting etc

Anybody got other suggestions for similar extensions? Especially maybe something where I could click on a background or frame on the website and then just change the color of that selected element

I know Stylus exists but it's difficult for me to figure out how to actually identify a given part of the website's html and then how that needs to be formatted in stylus's script entry to change it, so something GUI based would be best

Dark Reader has profiles that look at elements in the page to not just invert. There's backup profiles if that doesn't work as a nuclear option.

You can also adjust contrast, sepia, brightness, fonts, font stroke, etc.

I installed both Mactype and Better Cleartype Tuner already. I don't understand how to use Mactype (I only see a way to change fonts, not tweak the rendering further from there?), and Better Cleartype Tuner doesn't seem to actually do anything without a system restart and at that point it's difficult for me to really compare relative text clarity

>But really, return that thing and buy a 27 inch 4k
At 1440p the size of menus and text is already at the edge of what's big enough without turning on Windows scaling, so a 27in 4k display would absolutely require I turn on scaling, and I'm already having a headache dealing with that for when this laptop isn't plugged into an external display.

The blurrier menus and such isn't a huge deal, even if it's not ideal, but the fact that it causes images in my web browser to get scaled up too is a big problem. I've tried changing the high DPI settings for Vivaldi's exe and such to mark it as an exception for scaling (so I could then just tweak Vivaldi's menu scaling within the program), but that doesn't work, for some reason

It's honestly fucking baffling how much of a hassle this shit is, I don't understand how people with 1440p and 4k displays put up with this nonsense. Legit wishing I had just stuck with a 17in 1080p laptop.

I don't follow on your scaling issue. Is it that scaling is an issue because you switch between an external monitor and the laptops internal?

I don't have any issues when using an external monitor on a laptop at 4k with scaling, so I'm a bit puzzled as to why your Windows is being difficult.
That said, I have an issue myself where Windows refuses to accept my primary monitor as display 1.

Have you tried all the usual stuff? Drivers, different cables, different transfer interfaces like HDMI and Displayport?

>I don't follow on your scaling issue.

If I set windows scaling or even just text size on the OS level/in Windows settings to say 125%, and then in Vivaldi, I open say this image https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/Emmanuel_Benner.jpg in the browser, then that image will be zoomed in by 125% rather then showing up at it's native true resolution

If it was just happening to images on a web page, like in a 4chan thread all the images were zoomed in by 125%, then that'd be annoying but understandable since scaling images separate from other page formatting might cause issues. But I need a way to view images in my web browser at their actual native resolution, at least if they are open as their own file in their own tab.

Secondarily, at anything above 100% scale, the menus and UI of a lot of stuff is blurry, but that's not as big an issue. I'm not having problems with having separate scaling settings on say display 1 vs display 2, I don't think. I never fully finished testing that though.

I don't know. Maybe it will re-render the fonts if they're supported, if you're forcing system fonts over web fonts in DarkReader.

video {
filter: invert(100%);

It uses filters to invert all the colors, but then it applies filters again to uninvert the colors for images and videos. This should get you 90% of the way (or more) most of the time.

If you happen to visit really old sites from the web 1.0 era that use tables for layout and don't use CSS that much, this works pretty well.

That is fair, I don't remember that at all and like I said, I haven't changed anything about it in 8 years. Maybe it existed back then and I just didn't notice. I don't remember an install page at all, leastwise not anything different from the configuration page. Maybe it's in there too, I don't know.

Is there a trick to find something using a browser's element picker to then know how to format that in stylus to modify said thing?
Anonymous No.106382978 >>106384883
>>106382505
For what I'm doing in those CSS rules, you don't need to use the element picker. I don't know how much CSS you know, but the rules I used are deliberately very broad.

First, we're inverting the colors of the entire document.
html {
filter: invert(100%);
}

Then, we undo the color inversion for img and video so that they're colored as intended.
/* undo what we did with the first html rule */
img {
filter: invert(100%);
}

video {
filter: invert(100%);
}

If you're feeling unsure about a CSS selector, you could test it out in JS first with document.querySelectorAll("...") replacing "..." with an actual selector.
Anonymous No.106384443 >>106384883
>>106382505
There's no trick. You just have to know CSS. Focus on selectors first, though. Having good command of how selectors work will let you target elements more precisely.

...what's disheartening is how many of these CSS selector tutorials are written by Indians. There used to be some really nice ones back in the day, but I can't find them anymore, because the search results are inundated with Indian slop.

I actually can't even figure out how to get Mactype running again, if I launch the Mactray application which I assume is the windows tray software you posted that I had running before, I get this error message

The Wizard doesn't do anything helpful, as I said, it just has me select a font, and if I hit default, it says no changes applied, when i'm wanting to change the rendering of that default font, I think? It makes more sense for me to mess with the default first

I do see a mactype tuner application which I am messing with now

Seems like the tuner application is more in line with what I am wanting.

Is there a way to find out what font a given application is using so I know which to tweak within Mactype?

I just use ublock filters to change the css of websites that suck and need to be changed.

My only wish is I could have multiple filters loaded into ublock instead of all on one giant file, like having a bunch of dotfiles instead but it's a small price to pay, considering it's usually a set and forget type of thing.
