What method of upscaling are you using to properly convert DVD anime to 720p/1080p? I was thinking of making a couple noteworthy chobits upscales and post them here as webp2 webms. I'm currently working with real esrgan and results look good.

Here is the standard bicubic upscale.

This would be the 720p downscale from the native 960p upscale.

>>106385697
No, I said PROPER. Real time upscalers are out of the question. Maybe some richfag can run real esrgan in real time but that's not me...

Most anime released on DVD will never get any kind of remaster so to be fair this is as good as it gets at least for slop clamp anime. Kind of weird thinking back they were the Japanese version of multi-universe disney slop today except it felt like you were being haunted because it's an uppity sentient AI that may or may not slit your throat in your sleep pretending? to be a dumb teenage girl of course, because Japan.

God I miss those times. The shows were dumb but the "oh shit" moments really stuck with you.

Looks kind of over-sharpened compared to the simple bicubic but it does also look stylized better. Interesting.

>method of upscaling are you using to properly convert DVD anime to 720p/1080p
Does not exist.
There is no proper way to do this.
The only legitimate way to get higher resolution is to rescan the original production material, assuming analog media.
Accept the limitations of the original production and treat it a reminder of a better world.

What comes close? realesrgan seems to be trying to keep a lot of the original detail but realcugan seems to be trying to mimic human stylization at the cost of destroying original detail. Or is it really just different models trying to overcompensate for something? I kept hearing good things about realesrgan and thought this was going to be it...

SeedVR2 is the current video upscaler.

I calculated it would take about 36hours to do 22min on my old system (2080ti) with the 3B model.

It did seem to produce nice results on my test clip. There was ghosting when it was panning but my input video was 480x320 AVI with MPEG quality artifacts.

Big complex models like realesrgan dont work well for anime. You are better off making chatgpt write a python script for you and train a small model only using high quality anime with a similar style to the one you want to upscale. Just overfit the shit out of it and you will get better quality and less uncanny artifacts. I got better quality and real time upscaling with a homemade tiny model trained with just few thousand frames extracted from very similar content.
If you don't need real-time you can get even better results.

I apply a subtle film grain shader to make it pop, sort of like detail texturing in old unreal games but in motion. Besides that, it's all stock upscaling settings. Looks fine on my old 19'' monitor.

Appears so, it's from aspect corrected rip. I remember watching it on a square monitor but maybe the studio adapted it for different types, such is the versatile nature of DVD releases.

Not only the characters, almost everything in this scene looks at least a little elongated, pay attention to the windows and the AC in the background.
Maybe it's the intended art style, it's been around 15 years since I watched this series. But I'd say the AR isn't fully correct

the Chobits DVD (or at least the one I downloaded) is absolutely fucked in terms of interlacing. the field order can swap from scene to scene. I ended up watching it with the nnedi deinterlacer configured to only use one field from the input, which effectively split the already mediocre vertical resolution in half
