linux user since almost 20 years.
i don't like where linux is heading.
running freebsd in a vm and i like it.
feels more coherent.
similar to slackware in many ways but more coherent.
same init system but freebsd is more coherent and recent.
should i switch?
last time i switched system was 5 years ago

i need to run some vm's, run python scripts mostly and some browsing.

so far i like the package manager 'pkg'.
zfs seems interesting too

you forgot to use the word "coherent" a fourth time so ngmi

let me guess, something along the lines of transsexuals and jews? you won't find much solace in freebsd. or anywhere, in fact.

it's "coherent" until it takes you 3 hours to do something that takes 5 minutes on Linux.

>zfs seems interesting
zfs is great. fortunately, it runs on Linux too.

*bsd, sadly, have less driver support than linux. If you want then use linux distros that try to be close to BSD. You already mentioned slackware, but if you want something easier, more convenient, and doesn't require you to compile your software, then try void linux, original creator was a freeBSD dev.

mostly because linux is changing so much all the time.
i have choice fatigue.
say i want to run a simple init system like sysvinit.
i'd have to find a distro which is set up like that and accept any shortcomings of that distro.
i like the default system and it feels like i'm getting the good parts of debian and the good parts of slackware in one os.

now, i've only tested it for a couple of days.

so you just don't like systemd?
by using freebsd you're also accepting the shortcomings of not using linux.

It can be nice if you're already a god tier tinkerer and can turn it into a kind of "Mac but free". You should double check if it's compatible with your hardware though.
At some point you will likely come across something you need but can't install. I recommend considering modded Linux kernels and alternative distros like Artix or Devuan first.

Let me guess, you came to this website through mastodon specifically to spam culture wars on this board? You obviously wouldn't find solace in BSD or any distro outside your jewish tranny cabal.

i personally didnt like how slow pkg was, took way too long to install kde but that might be a problem in the fact i didnt go for the meta package
id like more people to sell me bsd, maybe ill change my view

FreeBSD has shit license and same CoC that Linux has. So both of the bad features. Also BSDs support LGBT officially with large amounts of money while Linux doesn't support at all (only unofficial support in unofficial discords, subreddits etc. like BSDs also have), Of course macOS and Windows has official DEI (yes, even your Windows 7 has OFFICIAL DEI and LGBT support).

personally, i thought pkg was snappy enough despite being in a vm.

i'm still undecided. i hate switching systems. it better be worth it. when i was younger i enjoyed trying new distros but now, i need everything to run so, downtime is to be avoided

swap partition is generally not a thing anymore on Linux, it's just a file on the native filesystem. not sure if FreeBSD supports that kind of thing. having the entire disk dedicated to zfs brings several quality of life features, but again, i'm not sure how easy FreeBSD makes it to put boot on another disk.

distro hopping/OS hopping is mostly mental masturbation
for a desktop or laptop, use Windows or, if you want to buy Apple hardware, Mac OS
for a server, use Debian, the universal OS
don't like systemd? then Devuan
then get on with your life

Love FreeBSD and learned the ropes on it before I ever got into Linux thanks to the Handbook.
Sadly, it misses support for a lot of shit we even take for granted on Linux. I always had problems with WiFi drivers, Steam gaming is a no-go, Linuxulator is usually based on an older Red Hat, flash required fiddling with /etc/fstab... it's not all smooth.
I deeply love the OS and its logical ways of doing things but it would need quite a bit of work before I'd consider replacing Linux with it.

its too late. i'm already transferring my home directory.
linux is fun and it taught me everything i know about unices, its time to give freebsd a try. in any case i will have a linux vm.
the only games i play are both from '99.

its not so much about shortcomings, debian and devuan are very complete, i'm just thinking about the constant changes and chaos. i have novelty fatigue. freebsd seems more stable in that regard. feels good to have an advanced package manager and ports.

smac and ja2

i use slackware since 5 years and its fast but every time i need something from outside the distribution, i need to track everything and i got tired of it at some point.
i could probably manage everything meticulously by hand but i just don't have the time for that so stuff ended up in non-standard directories etc and i started to neglect some other things so the OS kept growing in size.
its great though. if you just want a distro which has most of what you need by default, slackware is good. its a different philosophy from a different time. i like it but i also like some degree of comfort and freebsd seems to have both.
time will tell.
Anonymous No.106392074 [Report]
now if you take slackware and put something like nix or guix on top, then you might have something more flexible.
Anonymous No.106392083 [Report]

just wait until you get into the hell of mixing ports and packages because a package isn't compiled with the dependencies or options you want
and then after compiling a port for 2 hours, the build fails because of some option you chose that the build system didn't account for
so you end up compiling from scratch and dumping a bunch of stuff in /usr/local or /opt anyway
then it'll be time to hooooooooooooooop again!
