I've been to a store, and I've ensured myself that I'd prefer tactical over linear, but other than that, there wasn't much to look like. The discount I mentioned before no longer works, and the v6 Max got slightly more expensive, so I'm reconsidering my options once again.
>>106412058
Coming back to this Aula f108 pro, I've seen the more preferable colours (in particular Gradient Grey RA or Black and Grey)
cheaper from some other certified shop:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009032435010.html
So how does this one stack up to Keychron V6/K10 Max? And what about the Aula f108 non-pro version? That one also is out there for a decent price.
And speaking of that, how bad are the keycaps on that? Is the choice of keeping them on just aesthetics? Because maybe if I ignored that bit, grey buttons might be good enough (at least initially, I can always swap them out later if they bother me too much).
And should I get o-rings? Would they help make it that bit more quieter even with silent switches? And what size should I get? I've seen those for under $2 for 125 of 2.5mm ones:

I decided to get those:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009032435010.html (Gradient Gray RA)
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008738227865.html (110 pcs)
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008738227865.html (Black, I dunno if I'll end up using them, but since I was ordering stuff anyway, I thought I'll get them just in case OD9xID4xCS2.5mm)
For now, I didn't get any other keycaps, and first I'll see how those on there by default work. If I don't like them, then I can get some other ones.
It ended up at a total of $99.11, so right in my initial budget.
Thanks for all the advice, mates.

Was half-unconscious clicking around vendors and this one woke me out of my stupor. Not sure whether based or cringe. Model M case shape on a 65% with a proper curved PCB/plate. And being a bit larger than a regular 65 it'll probably sound a lot less bad. Optional top mount or gasket mount, can't find any graphic of the mounting points though.
https://novelkeys.com/collections/frontpage/products/curve-65-keyboard
Price is not bad, but no internal weight and layout is 99% fixed. But you get all the keys, no blocker. Hotswap tri-mode PCB only... yuck. 2kg assembled isn't terrible. 6061 aluminum... I'm trying to remember if that's bad. 6063 is the standard that you see on most stuff.
Can't find any info about who is making this, all I know for sure is it's a Chinese project, because they've got Chinese in their graphics.

I hope you're happy with all this. But since you're going silent, one more thing to consider: stabilizer noises will annoy you even more than they would annoy a regular keyboard user, since you're not getting much other noise from the keyboard. Consider getting a small tube of lubricant to occasionally inject into the stabilizers to quiet them down/stop the 'ticking'. Super Lube 21010 is cheap and does the trick wonderfully, the only thing that would make it more useful would be a needle tip for applying it.

Stabilizers are those extra pseudo-switches on wider keys like spacebar and enter, right? Would I have to just inject the lube after removing the keycap, or would disassembling something more be required?

I have a CM Storm with brown cherry switches. Iβve had it since 2020 but the esc has broken and this week I spilled some tea on it and even though I tried cleaning it I think the keyboard should be retired.
Now in South Africa we have access to Ducky keyboards but my cousin said that I should consider a Chinese keyboard. With my credit card rewards I could get 50% off a Ducky so Iβm leaning to that.

If you can get a Ducky for 50% off I'd just do that. No QMK/VIA isn't necessarily a problem if you use large keyboards and don't need to reprogram keys much. You get genuine cherry switches (still a plus imo even these days) and not the worst double-shot OEM caps.

How I don't see how you can have the arrow cluster and avoid shortening the 0 without making the keyboard wider.
"Is it that bad" no. It's a great layout. You put your print screen/etc above the numpad and use the numpad for navigation. Numlock becomes an important key to keep track of so make sure you get one with indicator lights.
I would like a nice keyboard without any keys removed to move on from my Corsair K70.
Ideally something made out of metal rather than plastic.
It needs to have dedicated media keys as well, not stuck to any FN keys.
I do not want any (L)RGB(T) lights on my keyboard, so if it has any it at least needs to be possible to turn them off while the keys remain fully visible.
What would the professionals of /mkg/ recommend me?

Yes it is definitely more comfortable I would not be able to go back to not having a mod key to write all the brackets and +-=.
I don't recommend the helix though as I believe a keyboard with column stagger like the silakka is better than a pure grid.

There's no reasonable amount of money I could charge you if you wanted a one-off BS dactyl. IIRC one of the dudes who works at unicomp made his own custom ortho model F type board, and getting it to work properly was a big pain in the ass. Now imagine how much more of a pain in the ass something with a curved keywell would be.

Well, we would need to reason together to overcome that. It is already understood to be a larger task than what you currently enjoy providing, so a larger number is expected. I can tell, though, that this is something you do not want to do; so I will look into seeing how much it would cost(time&money) for myself to do it. I suspect it will be 4 figures for sure ;3

There was a time I meant to buy BOX Jades and accidentally bought BOX Royals. Holy fuck were they strange to type on. You really feel the weight and I doubt ill ever get used to it, it draws your attention on every keypress. I normally enjoy baby kangaroos so it was quite a bit heavier.
I only use them on keys i want to feel strange to press.
I couldn't imagine typing on Navys that are even heavier at
90g Peak
75g Operating
90g Bottom
although maybe the weird feel of Royals came from how sharp the peak was in combination with the weight.
TLDR. Beware they may be too heavy.

I was more getting at that it doesn't matter what kind it has, I just want some kind of backlighting that can do all white under the keys. If one keyboard has some customizable backlight that can do strobing patterns or whatever else, great. If it's just one solid color, that's fine too. I just want it to be able to do all white

I have a 42-key mini dactyl. Currently running some cheapo MDA keycaps (like picrel). They are sculpted ABS, with only slightly spherical top. They are alright, but I have accidental presses while typing, and the texture isn't that enjoyable. Should I try DSA or XDA next, in PBT? I am also considering SA, as I dig the idea of a deep spherical well in the keycap, but I fear it will make my keyboard too tall and unwieldy. I don't care about colors or legends or the thock faggotry. Only care about typing comfort, feel and accuracy.
Perhaps anyone running a keycap mix on dactyl? Especially for the thumb clusters, to make them less tall? Actually thinking of trying SA on the keywells, and DSA on thumbs to do just that.

SA was too tall & the tops of the keycaps too wide for a dactyl IMO. Meant that you could easily hit keys adjacent to the one you were actually trying to hit. MT3 doesn't have this problem for me since it's a little bit shorter, and the keycap tops are smaller. DSA & KAM work well on a dactyl too.

I mean it's obvious to my eyes that the legends are easier to read when the backlight is off than when it is on, and the picture is meant to illustrate that when you look at it in thumbnail or blur your vision a little the legends become hard to make out because the light between the keys dominates visually.

Mechanical keyboards are shit for gaming compared to hall effect anyways. They're fine for work but anyone who pretends they can hold a candle to hall effect keyboards is retarded and not worth listening to.

There are two kinds of gamers who buy this sort of shit (and there's always something new that you "need" to have an "edge"):
- Pros playing at the highest level who know this is a <1% improvement but for whom small incremental gains could make the difference
- Losers who struggle either because they are stupid or lazy, and believe because of marketing and hype that this will deliver the huge gains they're missing

Not anymore. They're a tool interface and data entry device.
CAD developers and animators basically use the keyboard and mouse the same way gamers do and most data entry uses the num-pad most of the time.
Very few people actually "type" anything beyond a few sentences in an email or shitposts on forums.
I'm not "anti" mechanical keyboard I just think paying more than 60 bucks for one is retarded and keyboard "hobbiests" have driven up the prices of meme keyboards while misrepresenting their functionality.
Hall effect are nice because you can adjust the actuation point which is very very handy for certain software interfaces. You can than push one button to switch profiles for typing an email or whatever.
are there any good low profile 100% boards? why is every fucking keyboard 75%?
my wrists hurt and buying a wrist rest to use my keyboard is gay, I'm annoyed that I have to get one. I literally don't care about sound which seems to be the only benefit to having some tall thick boy.

Basically yes. I ended up just buying the silakka, if I don't like it at least it wasn't that expensive. I was thinking about it a lot but in the end I see no way of knowing other than just testing it.
I'm also learning proper home row since last week. My ghetto technique got the job done more or less but I always felt a bit limited. I can write a few words quickly but then just lose my position on the keyboard. Hope that won't be happening anymore with proper technique.

Got my keyboard. Feels weird to type on compared to my generic Dell but I don't hate it. Can someone recommend a good switch sample pack? I'm used to full keyboards so it's gonna take some time to adjust. I'm not much of an RGBfag but the different lighting effects are pretty cool.

Keychron makes flat full size boards. I haven't tested one properly, but at least the K5 has pretty good reviews:

>CAD developers and animators basically use the keyboard and mouse the same way gamers do
It's not a bad point, but there's a large difference which is that there is never a moment during use of CAD where failing to do something 5ms faster than your opponent causes you to fail rather than succeed. So while in some sense you can usefully compare CAD to a video game, it's completely ridiculous to suggest that a hall effect keyboard will be as beneficial to a CAD user as it is to a serious competitive gamer.

Doesn't Redragon have a bunch of boards that are basically what you're asking for? backlit full-size mechanical keyboards with multimedia controls and macro keys?

Ordered a topre keyboard to try out last week. Why not, right? Package shows up today, theres a sticker on it that says "Inspected by carrier". Weird, never had this happen. Open it up, keys work fine, but then start playing around with the case and notice the entire keyboard is sliding around within the case. Then I turn it upside down and shattered plastic pieces come dropping out, presumably some clips that were broken when they opened it up. Now I have a busted keyboard and get to do all the return claim admin with the seller and carrier... guess this is a sign to just save up for a Model F or M instead

Which are better metal or plastic frames for keyboards? Also, are silent keyboards a meme?

depends on the sound and weight you want of a keyboard
metal chassis are usually quieter, heavier, and subjectively higher quality
plastic chassis are louder, deeper pitched, and can be high quality but you can also get cheap looking pos
most of the custom market focused on specific layouts or makers will be using metal chassis, plastic are typically OEM but it depends. the more esoteric stuff will usually be made for metal chassis
silent switches can be good, just depends.

>Which are better metal or plastic frames for keyboards
Depends. Metal will stay more beautiful over time, but I don't know if anyone knows how long these PCBs will last. For sound, linears and tactiles do sound better on some metal boards I think, but hollow plastic can sound good for some other kinds of switches, especially clickies and, according to some, topre rubber domes too.
Metal is heavier, which is better in some ways and worse in others which should be obvious and doesn't need to be explained by me.
The finishes on aluminum tend to be nicer than the finishes on cheap injection ABS, but you can get nicely finished boards made of e.g. Polycarbonate.
There's something really special about metal, we all know that. We sometimes forget there can be really nicely-done plastics. I'm not prepared to decide which one is better, but most of my keyboards are made of aluminum. Maybe someday I'll get a polycarbonate one, or acrylic...
>Also, are silent keyboards a meme?
Depends on your workplace or your spouse. I don't love them but they do what it says on the tin.
Has anyone bought prebuilt boards from keebio before? Is there 90 day return policy legit? There's a couple of weird form factor boards I'd like to try out but don't really want to be out a couple hundred dollars if it doesn't work out for me.

Actually nvm my question. Instead, I'd just shoot them an email. Explain that you want to try a keyboard layout and you're not totally ready to commit. Get a confirmation (or denial) ahead of the purchase that their 90-day return policy applies to your situation. Worst case scenario it'd be great ammo against them.

Yeah I'll probably just do this. The way the policy is written it sounds like it will be fine, but it's a little bit ambiguous.

If you're wondering about the "assembled" bit I believe that applies to boards you pay for them to assemble from parts, since they cannot then take them apart and re-sell that solder pcb as new.

I'd say "in a similar condition that you received it" is also a little ambiguous.
I'd videotape the unboxing just in case there are any defects out-of-the-box, same as you'd take pictures when you rent a car.
