Mint loonix, latest stable whatever
Doesn't recognize screen when dock is reconnected, only connects the first time it's docked.
Is this perchance a common problem that has been solved 13 years ago?

I got my C13. First impressions are good. aluminum shell and lid, feels very solid. Display is gorgeous (from my limited experience).

Loading the modified coreboot CFW from MrChromebox/Chrultrabook project was simple. Put Debian 13 with KDE on there. It's a Ryzen 3700C w/16GB RAM and 256GB Nvme.

Audio setup had a minor hitch. Short version, had to symlink a config file that gets installed to the wrong folder.

The Chromebook keyboard is a little odd, but I can adjust. There's another script in the chrultrabook documentation to get F1-11 keys on the top row instead of the Chromebook function keys.

Haven't fooled with screen rotation/pen input yet but it's next on my testing list after I install a few creature comforts and configure the DE behavior.

Very, very close in size to my old X230, and smaller than the salvaged L390Y I fixed and will eventually pass on to somebody else.

(X230 top in stack, C13 under that, L390Y bottom)

these are the usual recommendations. Otherwise consider getting a dock with an ethernet jack.

Take your pick of the latest P1 (16"), P14s Intel (14.5"), T14s (14") or X13 (13").

Not that you can't get nearly modern specs in models up to 4-5 years old, you just have to read listings carefully and maybe buy some ram on your own.

Nothing smaller than 13" unless you get into tablet shit/detachable keyboard models. But 13" screen doesn't mean all 13" models have the same physical dimensional footprint. Z13 and X1 Nano are very small 13" laptops with tiny bezels, there's like an inch or more difference between them and say, an L13. An X13 is somewhere in between and will vary from generation to generation.

For $500 you can just buy a used mbp that blows this piece of shit out of the water. Using Windows is a total nightmare, even after downgrading from 11 to 10. I could run Linux, but I'm straight, don't wear thigh high socks nor do I have a crippling need to feel unique.

T480 or A485 if you prefer AMD. I have both, happy with both
>>106456646
you're not gonna need a lot for a home server. I'd still recommend something a bit newer than a x230 if you're gonna do video streaming because hardware encoding is nice on slightly more recent machines (I can't remember if sandy/ivy have h264 hw encoding or not)
like for my other quote look into those 2 models, especially for game server hosting since you'll be able to put more RAM inside them (they can take 64GB). more RAM can also be useful for filesharing if you're gonna use zfs, and they can both hw encode h264/h265

- Compatible with Mint and Win11

temps seem fine. about 36C on boot up/idle. Put on a Youtube video in 1440p and let it run for a few minutes, it only ever hit about 47C. If I scrub around in it, it will go up to around 50.

Anything in particular you want me to test?

The keyboard is taking a little getting used to. I think I'm going to remap a few more keys. I don't need the "lock" button (i'll just let it auto-lock on idle or shut the lid), but I do need a Delete key, lol. I only realized it later that the workflow Chromebook keyboards want you to use is the "Search [Left Meta] + Backspace" and that's just not going to do.

No Caps Lock is also kind of weird (again, it's the Search/Meta button for this keyboard). I think I'll remap it to capslock like a normal keyboard. I use a Model M at my desk so I've never used a Meta key in my life, all my keyboard shortcuts rely on shiff/ctrl/alt modifiers.

ha. that vid

I have the t14 (non-S) gen1 Ryzen Pro 4750U w/32GB RAM and 1TB samsung 970evo
It's a decent machine except Lenovos BIOS will drain battery even if OFF.
It loses about 50% charge per week being off but if you disconnect the battery via the BIOS that goes down to like less than 5%.
Just a stupid odd quirk of the system that Lenovo never straightened out. Support will say absurd things like its a driver problem that the BIOS slurps battery even when off.
Anyway.. It's been a decent machine for me but it doesnt game that well
It's barely OK at fortnight, and other games like Rust are basically unplayable.
I bought it hoping that the built in Vega graphics would let me get some gaming done... but anything more than retro games is going to be tough.

I'm looking for a laptop that has a 1366x768 panel but a relatively recent cpu, at least 10 000+ cpu mark.
Is it possible to find something like this?
Basically, high dpi screens really fuck with my eyes, making them constantly refocus. I've been using a 1366x768 laptop for 8 years then switched to a newer laptop with a 1920x1080 screen and started having severe eye strain, with my myopia worsening in the span of 2 months.
I can only comfortably use a low-res screen, it seems. How would you get out of this predicament bros

I don't think DPI is the issue here. PWM is.
Modern panel controls brightness by rapidly turning the screen on and off. Try set the brightness to max and see if it helps.

I did consider this, and found that the new 1920x1080 laptop I used actually didn't have PWM. Currently, I have a Mac Air 15 M4 side by side with a thinkpad e15 (with 1920x1080) from work, and the difference is night and day. It's like when looking at thinkpad screen, I perceive the information being displayed "immediately", while on mac, my eyes constantly refocus on each part of the screen to be able to read. And scaling doesn't help.
With this thinkpad e15 it's also not perfect, with prolonged usage I still get fatigue.

I come back here every now and then to thanks /g/ for giving me the impetus to buy an actually useful and reliable laptop.

I have literally killed my thinkpad and brought it back to life. I spilled tea inside the vents where it shorted the ACPI. I tore the thing down, I wiped it, isopropyl'd it, and waited a while. It's been working fine ever since. There are plenty of other instances where say, my bag was mistreated and the battery casing was busted. Lo and behold, a quick replacement was available. Another time the keyboard was broken. A key replacement was there. I wanted to swap to azerty: easily done. I needed more ports: here's a cheap dock. Chargers are cheap and plentiful. I know that when I need to move to nu-thinkpad I'll probably suffer, but I'll stay on this laptop for a long while yet.

nowadays the problem is often not PWM. that problem has been mostly fixed, although you do still find screen that do it. some newer screen tech is reintroducing it.
the real problem is a thing called temporal (time-based) dithering. basically, the gpu and/or monitor flicker individual pixels back and forth in order to simulate a broader range of colors.
it is very similar to PWM, but the actual mechanism and purpose is different. at the end of the day you are still dealing with what is effectively a quickly flashing light in your eyes. no wonder you feel unwell.
temporal dithering is done on both gpus and monitors themselves. i believe ever modern gpu does it by default and it is difficult or impossible to disable. some monitors do, and others don't.
this is all done so that computers can display more color. as if anyone actually gives a shit. brainless nerds and marketing dorks have destroyed computing. imagine a whole group of people designing hardware or software and not one of them stops to think that perhaps rapid flickering might have a negative effect on our eyes or brain.
it's a complicated topic and not all flickering is bad. it just depends on the frequency of the flickering and the persistence of the light, ie: does it go strictly off and on like an LED or does it pulsate like an incandescent bulb. i am still learning about it and how to deal with it.
consider yourself lucky to be in the elite minority that has the highly attuned nervous system necessary to even perceive this shit. consider yourself unlucky that there are so few of us that manufacturers and developers do not give a shit about us and will continue to produce headache inducing hardware and software.
eventually we will be totally unable to use phones or computers.

I either had to hard reset or plug back into the dock to get a display. (Not fun when I just arrived at a client). I think I may have solved it by mirroring the built-in and external display when docked. This is in KDE on my T540p. Not sure if that helps, but might point you in the right direction. I think it was expecting the same display configuration when waking up?

The only differentiating factor between the L and T series is that the L series lacks the magnesium chassis but tends to come with features you'd expect from the T series such as SODIMM RAM. For a few generations the L series variant made more sense than the T series variant since the T series variant would have soldered RAM or lack of certain I/O ports.

My L series has metal hinges, IR camera, fingerprint reader, WWAN capability and a Smartcard reader. The types of features you'd expect from a proper business laptop. In fact, when my choice was between the L14 G5 and the T14 G5, the only thing I'd get from the T14 G5 would be the magnesium chassis, as the L14 G5 had the better speakers and the larger battery. But do keep yapping about how it's the "poorfag" laptop even though it tends to be a better option than the amazing legendary T series that is always underspecced to L series levels to get you to splurge out on the P series.

Examples of what I'm talking about would be things like the X230, Elitebook 2570p, and the Latitude E6230. After intel 3rd gen, i'm seeing a lot of them going towards thin and light instead of just compact, and thin and light isn't exactly what i'm looking for.
I'm currently typing from an elitebook 2570p and love the little thing, but have wondered if a laptop in a similar form factor exists but with just a newer cpu without being some niche board replacement. I'm waiting on an i7-3632QM to put in it, and that should help it catch up, but the screen situation seems like it can't be helped.

I'm looking for a thinkpad that has decent power, is built well, but also has a replaceable keyboard, ram, storage, and fan, as those are likely failure points. I was looking at the P16 or T15, but the fans are riveted to the heatsink, meaning a replacement when I would probably need it in a few years would be expensive or impossible to source.

Anonymous No.106508455 [Report]

All of them have the "hinge problem", as does every other manufacturer. Laptops are so goddamn thin and minorities and children are so abusive with them that it creates the perfect storm of retardation where repeated one-handed-from-a-corner opening of the screen eventually stresses it enough that it rips the fragile, shallow mounts out of the lid or chassis.

The most egregious ones (and part of the class action lawsuit) were consumer-grade Ideapad/Yogas though.

L series are "fine" but you do have to be somewhat more careful with them as they don't have a metal chassis...and even if it did like some others, you still shouldn't abuse it or it WILL break.

Absolutely not. I had an HP EliteBook 845 G7 and the keyboard started glitching out and the keys not working sometimes. The G7 and G8 EliteBooks/Zbooks have the same soldered-on keyboard as do the budget laptops. It's easier to swap out the palmrest area completely than to fiddle with the keyboard separately. The G5/G6 EliteBooks/Zbooks are way more repairable in this regard. But on their own, these G7/G8 EliteBooks/Zbooks are fantastic, especially the ones with a Ryzen 3. Because their cooling is garbage and won't be able to handle more than 4 cores well without undervolting or severe throttling.

I have used thinkpads for years but mainly the X220/X240 and older. Now I'm in the market for a new laptop and I'd like something that will
- run coreboot
- have high end specs for 2025 and ideally for a few years

I am considering this which is $1300 although there are many offerings available from different sellers as it's a white label model:
https://laptopwithlinux.com/product/clevo-v560/

It is upgradeable to 96GB RAM, 2x4TB SSDs, and the camera and mic can be removed. The wifi/LAN card is also user-upgradeable.

thank you for the info. can you ballpark total cost with maximum specs for that model? assuming i dont mind what the screen is and im not looking for the 100% niche autism version, just a good base to upgrade.

for me 1300 for this barebones + <800 in upgrades for 8tb ssd, 96gb ram, etc seem worth it. but I am experiencing choice paralysis and also it's a niche model and not many reviews.

the T480? about ~150-200 for the machine itself, if you're lucky you can get an i7 version at that price but i5 is fine too (typing that on my i5 T480 btw). then you can upgrade the RAM (I paid 100 for my 64GB kit), SSD (pick whatever NVMe size you need, and there's potential to add a 2nd one in the WWAN slot), wifi card (AX210 for about 15 on aliexpress), trackpad (glass trackpad is roughly 40-45, you can ignore that upgrade if you use the trackpoint), keyboard if the one you buy isn't backlit (roughly 30 bucks, might be a bit more or less depending on supply), 72Wh external battery (roughly 45), dual heatpipe cooler (~25-30), screen panel (the seller I bought mine from sells a great one for 65), and I think that's about the extent I've upgraded mine. all those prices are in euros, convert in your own currency if applicable. also all parts were bought from aliexpress except for the backlit keyboard and battery which I bought off ebay, and ram/ssd from amazon. I can provide links for most of those if you need them
again this is a laptop that was released in 2018, don't expect high-end gaming performance on it. it's good for web browsing, media consumption, light games, running VMs, stuff like that though

wifi card: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006968877268.html (there's probably cheaper ones than this, when I ordered from that seller they were 10€ each, price is higher now)
adapter to fit a 2230 NVMe in the WWAN slot: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005006832363079.html (it's better to use that adapter with a 2230 instead of the native 2242 since you'll find drives much easier for that format)
dual heatpipe cooler: https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007532136977.html (make sure to pick the "discrete graphics" option. it'll fit even if you don't have the Nvidia GPU inside, you'll just need to put some electrical tape over the GPU plate)
external battery: https://www.ebay.com/itm/387105607116
RAM: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DGL5CWYZ (I got the 2x32GB kit, works well despite being a chink brand. they don't have it in stock anymore but you can get any DDR4 kit at 2400MHz or higher and it'll work. I have Corsairs in my A485)

understandable choice honestly, it's an older machine so it being slower is expected. just check the Buy it Now section and sort by price. the one I found the seller was selling for 250€, and since I had seen the listing I received an offer for like 205. thanks again for your insight, anon. I will consider this as an option and look around. However, to me, I don't think it makes much sense at all to purchase a T480 with a CPU that is up to 7x slower for a minimum of $500 (+mods) when the new(er) alternative is $1300 (+mods). $700 is a lot of money to me, but it's not 7x more than $500... I think the newer machine is worth it. I wish these were still cheap, like in the old days. I remember buying my X220 for around $150, and that was before this major inflation wave which seemingly has never ended.

I need opinions on an OEM ThinkPad branded bag for it, either Lenovo or IBM is fine. I need actual businessmen going through airport TSA to think I am a serious businessman.

Realistically I want this to be my new 'personal item' for air travel, so it will have my mouse, phone, book, watch, and some other stuff in it. If it could fit my Steam Deck as well that would be nice, but probably not realistic due to the bulk of the Steam Deck in it's own case, I don't really play vidya on airplanes anyway due to normies.
