I got my C13. First impressions are good. aluminum shell and lid, feels very solid. Display is gorgeous (from my limited experience).

Loading the modified coreboot CFW from MrChromebox/Chrultrabook project was simple. Put Debian 13 with KDE on there. It's a Ryzen 3700C w/16GB RAM and 256GB Nvme.

Audio setup had a minor hitch. Short version, had to symlink a config file that gets installed to the wrong folder.

The Chromebook keyboard is a little odd, but I can adjust. There's another script in the chrultrabook documentation to get F1-11 keys on the top row instead of the Chromebook function keys.

Haven't fooled with screen rotation/pen input yet but it's next on my testing list after I install a few creature comforts and configure the DE behavior.

Very, very close in size to my old X230, and smaller than the salvaged L390Y I fixed and will eventually pass on to somebody else.

(X230 top in stack, C13 under that, L390Y bottom)

Take your pick of the latest P1 (16"), P14s Intel (14.5"), T14s (14") or X13 (13").

Not that you can't get nearly modern specs in models up to 4-5 years old, you just have to read listings carefully and maybe buy some ram on your own.

Nothing smaller than 13" unless you get into tablet shit/detachable keyboard models. But 13" screen doesn't mean all 13" models have the same physical dimensional footprint. Z13 and X1 Nano are very small 13" laptops with tiny bezels, there's like an inch or more difference between them and say, an L13. An X13 is somewhere in between and will vary from generation to generation.

T480 or A485 if you prefer AMD. I have both, happy with both
>>106456646
you're not gonna need a lot for a home server. I'd still recommend something a bit newer than a x230 if you're gonna do video streaming because hardware encoding is nice on slightly more recent machines (I can't remember if sandy/ivy have h264 hw encoding or not)
like for my other quote look into those 2 models, especially for game server hosting since you'll be able to put more RAM inside them (they can take 64GB). more RAM can also be useful for filesharing if you're gonna use zfs, and they can both hw encode h264/h265

temps seem fine. about 36C on boot up/idle. Put on a Youtube video in 1440p and let it run for a few minutes, it only ever hit about 47C. If I scrub around in it, it will go up to around 50.

Anything in particular you want me to test?

The keyboard is taking a little getting used to. I think I'm going to remap a few more keys. I don't need the "lock" button (i'll just let it auto-lock on idle or shut the lid), but I do need a Delete key, lol. I only realized it later that the workflow Chromebook keyboards want you to use is the "Search [Left Meta] + Backspace" and that's just not going to do.

No Caps Lock is also kind of weird (again, it's the Search/Meta button for this keyboard). I think I'll remap it to capslock like a normal keyboard. I use a Model M at my desk so I've never used a Meta key in my life, all my keyboard shortcuts rely on shiff/ctrl/alt modifiers.

I have the t14 (non-S) gen1 Ryzen Pro 4750U w/32GB RAM and 1TB samsung 970evo
It's a decent machine except Lenovos BIOS will drain battery even if OFF.
It loses about 50% charge per week being off but if you disconnect the battery via the BIOS that goes down to like less than 5%.
Just a stupid odd quirk of the system that Lenovo never straightened out. Support will say absurd things like its a driver problem that the BIOS slurps battery even when off.
Anyway.. It's been a decent machine for me but it doesnt game that well
It's barely OK at fortnight, and other games like Rust are basically unplayable.

Is it possible to find something like this?
Basically, high dpi screens really fuck with my eyes, making them constantly refocus. I've been using a 1366x768 laptop for 8 years then switched to a newer laptop with a 1920x1080 screen and started having severe eye strain, with my myopia worsening in the span of 2 months.

Currently, I have a Mac Air 15 M4 side by side with a thinkpad e15 (with 1920x1080) from work, and the difference is night and day. It's like when looking at thinkpad screen, I perceive the information being displayed "immediately", while on mac, my eyes constantly refocus on each part of the screen to be able to read. And scaling doesn't help.
With this thinkpad e15 it's also not perfect, with prolonged usage I still get fatigue.

I come back here every now and then to thanks /g/ for giving me the impetus to buy an actually useful and reliable laptop.

I have literally killed my thinkpad and brought it back to life. I spilled tea inside the vents where it shorted the ACPI. I tore the thing down, I wiped it, isopropyl'd it, and waited a while. It's been working fine ever since. There are plenty of other instances where say, my bag was mistreated and the battery casing was busted. Lo and behold, a quick replacement was available. Another time the keyboard was broken. A key replacement was there. I wanted to swap to azerty: easily done. I needed more ports: here's a cheap dock. Chargers are cheap and plentiful. I know that when I need to move to nu-thinkpad I'll probably suffer, but I'll stay on this laptop for a long while yet.

nowadays the problem is often not PWM. that problem has been mostly fixed, although you do still find screen that do it. some newer screen tech is reintroducing it.
the real problem is a thing called temporal (time-based) dithering. basically, the gpu and/or monitor flicker individual pixels back and forth in order to simulate a broader range of colors.
it is very similar to PWM, but the actual mechanism and purpose is different. at the end of the day you are still dealing with what is effectively a quickly flashing light in your eyes. no wonder you feel unwell.
temporal dithering is done on both gpus and monitors themselves. i believe ever modern gpu does it by default and it is difficult or impossible to disable. some monitors do, and others don't.
this is all done so that computers can display more color. as if anyone actually gives a shit. brainless nerds and marketing dorks have destroyed computing. imagine a whole group of people designing hardware or software and not one of them stops to think that perhaps rapid flickering might have a negative effect on our eyes or brain.
it's a complicated topic and not all flickering is bad. it just depends on the frequency of the flickering and the persistence of the light, ie: does it go strictly off and on like an LED or does it pulsate like an incandescent bulb. i am still learning about it and how to deal with it.
consider yourself lucky to be in the elite minority that has the highly attuned nervous system necessary to even perceive this shit. consider yourself unlucky that there are so few of us that manufacturers and developers do not give a shit about us and will continue to produce headache inducing hardware and software.
eventually we will be totally unable to use phones or computers.

I either had to hard reset or plug back into the dock to get a display. (Not fun when I just arrived at a client). I think I may have solved it by mirroring the built-in and external display when docked. This is in KDE on my T540p. Not sure if that helps, but might point you in the right direction. The only differentiating factor between the L and T series is that the L series lacks the magnesium chassis but tends to come with features you'd expect from the T series such as SODIMM RAM. For a few generations the L series variant made more sense than the T series variant since the T series variant would have soldered RAM or lack of certain I/O ports.

My L series has metal hinges, IR camera, fingerprint reader, WWAN capability and a Smartcard reader. The types of features you'd expect from a proper business laptop. In fact, when my choice was between the L14 G5 and the T14 G5, the only thing I'd get from the T14 G5 would be the magnesium chassis, as the L14 G5 had the better speakers and the larger battery. But do keep yapping about how it's the "poorfag" laptop even though it tends to be a better option than the amazing legendary T series that is always underspecced to L series levels to get you to splurge out on the P series.

So, what system could I get that has the newest cpu in a "standard laptop" compact chassis? Something around a 12.5" screen size, but still kind of thick and rigid. Examples of what I'm talking about would be things like the X230, Elitebook 2570p, and the Latitude E6230. After intel 3rd gen, i'm seeing a lot of them going towards thin and light instead of just compact, and thin and light isn't exactly what i'm looking for.
I'm currently typing from an elitebook 2570p and love the little thing, but have wondered if a laptop in a similar form factor exists but with just a newer cpu without being some niche board replacement. I'm looking for a thinkpad that has decent power, is built well, but also has a replaceable keyboard, ram, storage, and fan, as those are likely failure points. I was looking at the P16 or T15, but the fans are riveted to the heatsink, meaning a replacement when I would probably need it in a few years would be expensive or impossible to source.

Thinking about getting a used X13, but pics of the screen don't look great. What was the display like for Gen 3/4?

They announced P16 Gen 3 earlier today. Though they make it significantly lighter (3 KG > 2.5 KG) and slap RTX 5090 mobile equivalent dGPU in it so I'm quite concern about the thernal performance.

Cool, I have been looking for a replacement since the Bluetooth on my current card seems to be malfunctioning occasionally. Either that or the Linux kernel doesn't handle it correctly. I've been getting "no controller available" with Bluetoothctl.

I don't use bluetooth (don't even have the packages installed to use it) so I can't help much with that. the wifi part works, no idea about BT

kek, I just ordered 3 of those a few months ago. one went into my desktop, one into my A485, and the last one into my T480. my desktop's old AX200 went into my 3rd laptop, and the one that was originally was in my A485 went into my crappy ThinkCentre that has a wlan whitelist and that was the only one I had that worked in it

Very solid body, so-so hinges, good modularity apart from the keyboard being riveted to the palmrest. Harder to pry open than any ThinkPad, fingernails alone won't do it.

On the T-series I know (up to 2021) it's just taped from both sides, no rivets
