That despite 4chan users having a long history of shit posting shit like desu desu desu or using smug anime girl reaction images to enrage outsiders.

They could never fit-in with real users. So they simply replaced them and their culture with bots. They don't have to argue or sway opinions when they can censor and shit up all discussion. Since they control all moderation now they simply ban anyone that ignores them and manages to have a discussion anyway. Which is why /g/ is now so slow and nothing of value but console war shit is posted. Anyone posting actual code or discussing things of importance is banned and silenced.

This only make sense if you take it for granted that "they" don't want anyone to have "success, families, enterprises" etc. As soon as you acknowledge that "their" children live in the same society we do and post on the same websites (including, in some cases, 4chan) it becomes harder to maintain that they would want this. I don't know how many people you've met through 4chan but the ones I've met are disproportionately Jewish. So that's one "they" out of the question, for me.

And nobody in 2025 actually believes 4chan is anarchy. Everyone posts as though their posts are being read by a lawyer, and anyone who doesn't looks suspicious. Nonetheless 4chan still works because anonymity to the other posters has benefits even if it's not anonymity to the authorities.

As for the rest, blah blah "sapping your will" etc., if I had never had 4chan as a place to get into vicious arguments with strangers, some parts of me would have atrophied. Not a few people would say they honed their skills on 4chan; I wouldn't quite say that, but I would say that 4chan allowed me numerous opportunities to exercise my disagreeable nature, and to practice holding unpopular opinions—even ones I didn't agree with at first—and defend them from challenges. If I wanted to train people to be agreeable and to go with the flow, I'd much rather they spent their time on Reddit getting Skinnerian reinforcement when they choose not to rock the boat.

The better charge to lay against 4chan, if I wanted to lay one against it, is that it doesn't teach people to be Machiavellian. On 4chan you can just say whatever you feel. If you made an anonymous imageboard in India it would probably be different from 4chan, I'll grant that. And you could argue that Reddit has looked more like 4chan when certain subreddits weren't being banned. I still think it's different, but it's not a bad point.

But you can't really deny that 4chan and Reddit have enormously different incentives for posters, or that this produces a different kind of environment on each which over time will select for posters who like that kind of content. Disagreeable people get filtered out of Reddit because getting downvoted until you're invisible every time you take an outsider perspective sucks. 4chan, by contrast, drives away people who can't handle nastiness/degeneracy/etc., because there are so few mechanisms for removing it from their view.

This naturally produces different userbases over time. 4chan skews disagreeable, schizo, degenerate and retarded, while Reddit skews centrist, NPC, civil and midwit. It's obvious why these types thrive in these formats.

Look at the generals on /g/. They're all connected to gaming one way or another. Every quirk on 4chan is easily explained by realizing that we're on a gaming lobby.

Secondly, there is no equivalent to "downvoting", or its concomitant hiding of a disliked post. Bait exists both on 4chan on Reddit. Bait isn't a good way to farm (you)'s or get upvotes. Most people aren't that dumb and can tell you're trolling. Bait only consistently works on /pol/, but that's because responding to bait is part of the /pol/'s culture. Posting bait only gets you (you)'s on a single post. None of your other pots can be bait. If you're consistently caught posting bait, you'll get ignored on /pol/ too.

If you look at guides to farming karma on Reddit, they'll tell you exactly the sort of things you need to do to farm (you)'s on 4chan. The major difference is the userbase. In both cases, conformists to the culture of the userbase get more meanignful engagement. Non-conformists get punished by being ignored/downvoted.

I'm not saying that human nature is fundamentally different on 4chan vs. Reddit. Of course things work on Reddit for a reason, and will therefore work to some extent on 4chan too (This btw is an argument AGAINST the "different userbases" theory). But it's hugely important whether this is amplified by the design of the forum. As someone who disagrees with received opinion a lot of the time I can tell you that I've always found it far easier to get engagement on 4chan than Reddit if I'm just being honest or posting for fun. There are tricks to getting good at both websites if you really care about doing numbers, and not using those tricks will hurt on 4chan too if (you)s are what you care about; but at least on 4chan I know my post isn't being "hidden" because the first two mouthbreathers who saw it thought "wtf is this retard talking about". Reddit is hell

If we go by the structure of the website, Hacker News should be worse than Reddit. They decrease your posts opacity making your posts unreadable if you get downvotes. But I've been able get away with spouting controversial opinions on HN than on Reddit. That's purely because the userbase is different.

What you're conforming to matters more than how that conformity is enforced. On HN, I have to conform to startup culture. On 4chan, I have to conform to gamer culture. On Reddit, I have to conform to popular culture. If I started treating /g/ like SemiWiki, I wouldn't get any engagement. I know because I've tried.

All social interactions function the same way. Reddit just makes the results more visible. I don't belong on Reddit because Reddit is for the masses. I can't discuss anything complex there. If Reddit is biased toward anything, it's simplistic content, not socially conformist content. Again, because of its userbase.
