Watching the talk on my 2nd monitor was pretty hard, because Luke was clearly the only one actively participating in the discussion. Everything he said, Linus made an effort to appear to be listening to, but he clearly wasn't as whatever he talked about afterwards either dismissed Luke entirely, or he just took the conversation somewhere else completely and had nothing to add or followup with. My memory of "Anthony being better than everyone else" comes from one of the early RT videos they did, back then you only got very subtle difference wrt raster. They were doing a blind test to see who in the crew could differentiate what was raster and what was it. Anthony was the only one confidently succeeded pointing at subtle differences in both images. I've noticed there's a few ways for youtubers to tank their channels by showing shit to people they don't want to see.
I know one large channel killed his streaming viewership by letting his kids stream (his viewership wanted to watch him, not his kids), so now youtube doesn't recommend any of his streaming anymore.

It's actually more beneficial for your channel to NOT upload anything, rather than to upload a subpar video. This is why those channels that only upload once every 6 months don't die. Their videos always get recommended because youtube's algorithm knows everything they produce is high quality.

It's probably best to create lots of youtube channels for each individual subject.

No it was incredibly wrong from the get go. I feel like he fell into the same trap early web 2.0 content creators like RedvsBlue did. More than a decade ago he talked about how unreliable ad revenue is between affiliate links and adsense. He made some good decisions like making floatplane so he had his own platform and payment system. He didn't capitalize on it though. The biggest problem is that he kept steering the channel to clickbait slop rather than real product reviews. Great for ad revenue but bad for retention and nudging people towards crowdfunding. He's tried to step back from both day to day business and also being the only on camera talent, but you really can't trust other people to handle those things the way you do when you're the face of the company. He still went hard on scaling up with more hires, more sets, more production. The channel lives and dies on him playing Peter Pan, still enthusiastic about every new product.

Everyone else has less staff, more technical and detailed reviews, and despite the lower budget just as good production values. They might hold the attention span of the literal toddlers Linus is trying to get ad revenue from, but it's probably more stable.

Second Wind, the remnants of Escapist Magazine, just released a video talking about this exact same phenomena and they seemed to have figured it out pretty well
In short there's a new Youtube feature called "Restricted Mode". If you click on your profile pic in the upper right corner, it's an option in the menu.
The way this works is that Youtube tries to hide so-called "mature content" if it's turned on. And if your account is determined to be a child (a huge portion of Youtube viewers are between the ages of 15 to 17 especially for tech channels like Linus), or it can't determine your age at all either because you're not logged in or Google doesn't have enough data to determine, then your account is automatically set to this restricted mode.
If you give it a try by manually toggling it you'll notice a lot of clearly not-mature videos disappear from your recommendations feed, since as even Google themselves puts it in the settings the filter is "not 100% accurate". This means that the majority of Linus videos are flagged as potentially mature for whatever reason, and thus don't end up being recommended for young users, new users, users who aren't logged in and so on which ends up being a huge chunk of his viewers.
The only way to fix this is to complain to Google to fix whatever AI is determining which video is mature or not.
