Drawing Tablets
What are /g/ approved drawing tablet brands? Jewcom is overpriced, and Xencelabs is trying to be Jewcom v2.0. What do you think about XP-Pen and Huion?

AI is boring to use. it just feels like a lazier form of imagination. like i can just think the prompt in my head and get the result. i'd rather draw to see what my hands can do because it tends to lead to stuff i wouldn't anticipate.

well in the end you can do whatever you want, however, these days, I think it's pointless to draw, code, etc., unless it's a hobby. You can generate tons of images and achieve whatever you want, faster than drawing.

eh, that's true but it ends up feeling like the imperfections it produces have to be edited out too much to obtain something useful. i get that it's faster by an order of magnitude, but if i am spending as much time doing touchups as i would just redrawing with it as a reference, i'd just start from scratch so i can at least be improving my own skills. i end up just using generated images as a catalogue of reference material for the most part as a result, or maybe as a storyboard, but it would always be an intermediary step rather than a final result. that might change later on though, who knows how much better it'll become in terms of creative input.

I like my huion but I haven't checked their prices in a while so idk if they're still good for the cost. Display tablets were a game changer for me, so I definitely recommend springing for one of those. Cintiqs sucked ass. At least they did when I tried it last (2013 or so), so take that as you will.
I've heard decent things about XP-pen, too.

It's not sad, it's a logical step in the evolution of how we use tools. Instead of using tablets or photoshop or any other drawing software or God forbid a pen and paper like caveman you use AI to get precisely what you want, twice as fast. So logically everyone just stopped drawing already like a caveman and they're using AI for everything, from youtube thumbnails and ads to cartoons and movies.

Drawing helps develop the premotor area, parietal lobe bilaterally, and the left precuneus. It helps develop and maintain advanced motor skills, communication skills, cognitive skills, and perception. Relying too much on something else to do it for you actively decreases the ability to perform these functions. It's what is meant when you "turn your brain off" by watching slop on TV, and it's a growing mental health concern when that is applied to all facets of life the way it has been. It's why there's a seemingly sudden rise in suicides spurred on by these llms as opposed to when they first became popularized with games like AI Dungeon

This board's image gen generals exist in a bubble.
Go around literally any board except /g/, 99% of images posted are drawn, not generated.
Go to Twitter, most art posted is not generated. People are going through extreme hoops in boorus and pixiv to filter AI, nobody is asking for it, it's generated into the void.
AI art has kinda stagnated mid-2024, like a solution to a problem that does not exist.

Don't ask /g/, they don't draw and is obsessed with AI. I don't own a screen tablet, maybe in the future. I heard that you have to deal stuff with parallax and calibration when owning one.

Just a FYI, Xencelabs is owned by XP-Pen. Both XP-Pen and Huion can be hit or miss in terms of build quality such as wobble, pointer lag etc. My main gripe with them is that their IAF can be too high (the pressure needed for the pen to register). Wacom have really low IAF like 1g? Which really makes a difference when I'm doing light sketching, it doesn't bother some people though. I think Huion is catching up with 2g IAF pen tech but that's only compatible for screen tablets iirc.

If you're still unsure, check this guy out, he recommends CTL 672 or Frego M if you're choosing your first pen tablet and there's other info on screen tablets.

I work with real artists I can say with certainty that a vast majority use an ipad and procreate for their main drawing/sketching purposes and then move to adobe for rendering or whatever other tools needed. judging from this thread and the IC population, they don't like apple products but again I work directly in the industry and I see it 8/10 times. take that as you will

the "industry" is pretty broad. everyone I work with uses either wacom or real paper scanned -> continued in photoshop with wacom. some people use procreate for fun or whatever but it's too simplistic for serious work. photoshop or maybe corel painter. the only people using apple products are the ones in front who need to fulfill customer's stereotype expectations.

i have an xp pen deco 01 v2 and it has everything i'd ever need. really cheap (on aliexpress they have a warehouse in poland which is nice if you live in eu). it doesnt have eraser on the opposite end, but the rocker button is convenient enough for that. i wish the tablet buttons were bigger and nicer. on mobile this tablet fucking sucks, just get a smasnug with pen support.
i recommend getting the largest tablet you have space for, because you can make the active area smaller in the driver software. dont look at low end screen tablets, because they might have cursor offset (all screen tablets have shit contrast because of the rough coating)
