Asking again because the last thread died.

Is there any portable player that will allow me to connect with a subsonic/navidrome server that doesn't run android? Everything just seems to be either the most barebone OS ever made or just a fucking phone.

The “KB EAR” Coffee eartips have been generating a fair bit of buzz among reviewers lately, so I decided to purchase a set and see what all the fuss was about. Interestingly, these eartips don’t seem to feature in KB EAR’s main product catalogue, which leads me to believe they are sold under consignment.

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: are these eartips worth your time and money? From my perspective, the answer is a resounding no! Their performance is mediocre at best, and here is why. My initial impression was how congested the upper frequencies sounded, despite the fact that these eartips have a wide bore. Typically, wide-bore eartips, such as KB EAR’s own TRI Clarions, tend to accentuate the treble, lending a sparkle and liveliness to the overall presentation. In this instance, however, the Coffee eartips sounded as if the upper frequencies were struggling to break free. The soundstage is surprisingly narrow as well, which is rather disappointing. Vocal presence is acceptable, but due to the aforementioned treble congestion, female voices can sound somewhat nasal. The bass is rather weak, too. There is a hint of mid-bass bloat, which adds a bit of body, but there is no real definition or texture. The sub-bass also sounds dispersed, rather than delivering a straight, deep dive.

On a more positive note, these eartips are indeed comfortable for extended listening sessions, as one of the reviewers highlighted. They certainly live up to that claim. Personally, I would not recommend the KB EAR Coffee Soft Silicone Eartips. While they are undoubtedly comfortable, they ultimately degrade the sound performance of your IEMs. In my opinion, the sonic compromises outweigh the comfort benefits, making these eartips a less-than-ideal choice for discerning audiophiles. There are far better options available on the market that offer both comfort and superior sound quality.

XSL is the iem brand that's going under the radar. Has alu iems as low as $20, and their pricey ones only hit like $100. Meanwhile, they graph really well above their price range. This is their $50 one compared to Dunu Davinci. Imo, it punches above it's weight.

You can safely discard opinions of anyone that uses less bass than harman.
Anonymous No.106502941
Harman is based on a sample of around untrained 250 listeners, and about 50 of whom (20%) were literally niggers, which is an overrepresentation. But more importantly, why would you arbitrarily follow the Harman target when it's based solely on listener preference when we know listener preference varies wildly when you separate groups by gender, race, age, listening experience, etc. even according to Harman's own research? Women for example prefer less bass than Harman. As do older (30+ year old) men, trained listeners, and just the average white listener.

Totl anon here. Impressions with the Sovereign Symphony 8W. Unofficial cable from Nightjar and MSRP is around 15,000 SGD (not sure about US pricing).

>Ergonomics
0/10. This cable is literally painful to use long-term. Normally when I wear the Storm with the stock Mira cable, the 2pins are angled inwards, pointing towards my head, but the earhooks and 2pin connectors for the SS8W are fucking massive. There’s no room left for an inward angle and this changes the insertion angle for the Storm as well. The Storm is tilted upwards and exerts pressure on my ear canal which becomes sore after just 30mins.

Even when stationary I’ve got to be mindful of how I wear it. The weight of the earhook tugs on my IEMs and so I gradually lose seal whenever I turn my head. It kinda helps if I rest the entire weight of the cable on the table but that means leaning back is out of the question.

Walkability is surprisingly decent with the cable tho.

>Sound quality (A/B’d with stock Mira MK2 cable)
SS8W is a U-shape, bright-leaning cable as compared to the stock Mira. For some reason, on the same volume step, the SS8W sounds louder – possibly due to lower output impedance? Or maybe the boosted coloration is just more audible.

On “Bloody Mary” by Lady Gaga, the opening background static is more audible with the SS8W. Bass is slightly louder but also bloomy, Mira’s bass is definitely tighter and better controlled.

The bright-leaning nature of the SS8W is more audible on weebshit like “Hoshizora no Memoria” and “あの輝きを忘れない” (both by Chata). Chata’s vocals sound a tad more laidback and less shouty on the SS8W (maybe it stages wider?), and cymbals sound more extended.

On Shadow Shape by Hatsuki Yura, I can hear the same bright nature of the cable – more treble texture, but bass sounds slightly muddy and not as tight as the Mira MK2. The muddiness comes through evidently around the 2:40 mark when the drums kick in when the duo sings their duet.

After months, or honestly I’d even say years, of tip rolling with every single pair of in-ear monitors I buy, and driving myself crazy trying to find differences between all the different SpinFit models or the new Dunu eartips, or wondering if the stock tips are good enough, etc., and never being fully satisfied, always feeling like I should swap them out for just a bit better sound...

In the end, I’ve decided I’m going to sell or throw away all my eartips and stick with the KBEAR 07 model, specifically. It’s like a Swiss army knife; not the best at anything, not perfect in any way, but good enough at absolutely everything, and it’s comfortable, and it never falls off my IEMs, no matter what.

I never really understood how you guys actually rate things for the consumer guide. Like, it seems to be mostly chink stuff, which I don’t care too much about, but are all “western” brands (and I use that term very liberally here as a lot of western brands are just rebranded chink shit) just bad ? I just want some footing. Like, take a shure IEM for instance like the shure aonic SE535, where would it fall relative to the others on the list ? Is it inferior to the 30$ offerings ? Is it simply inferior to everything to such an extent that it’s basically a DNR compared to the other suggestions ? It would be cool to have some more normie choices to compare to. It would make it easier to someone like me who only ever went through mainline products to find something I could be happy with. Then there’s long term reliability too, which I don’t have the slightest clue. A shure IEM would have some warranty, but from what I have seen from other brands, they don’t seem to care that much. I mean, it does not mean they aren’t reliable, but I have no frame of reference from the list by itself without at least some warranty.

>It would be cool to have some more normie choices to compare to.
normie western stuff is above $100 and are abysmal dogshit compared to the cheapest entry in the shopping guide

the only advantage of western brands is their customer service, and also most of the brands use very well fitting shells. apart from that they lack any redeemable quality in terms of sound quality

I have the Salnotes Zero 2 and they became unbalanced, one side outputted less volume. So I opened the encasement where the driver is and noticed that there were 2 thin yellowish synthetic layers over the drivers and on the side that was outputting less volume this layer was crumpled a bit, I tried to make it straighter but I just punctured it altogether. So I removed those layers from both drivers and now the sound is balanced again volume-wise, but what I'm wondering is: Did I by removing those layers altered the frequency response? Are they necessary for the intended EQ curve of the IEMs?

to avoid clipping the digital signal. I mean this is assuming you'll be using the bass gain knob in pic related. musicolet has an equalizer, but I never use it. that bass gain knob just makes it that mush easier to blast bass into my pos. setting negative pregain just allows headroom for my adjustments. you don't, or won't need -30db, but enough of it helps when you decide to crank that bass to 100% and you don't want the mix falling into itself. it's necessary for every other eq adjustment you make as well.

I like the sound of Aria and Chu, they're basically the same thing despite a completely different price range, not that big, but noticeable. Sadly, the quality of Aria is disastrous, they got some weird blisters underneath the paint coating in two places, also causing the paint to come off. The wireless ones sound like absolute shit but it's alright since I wasn't expecting anything else from them, I just needed a pair of earphones to use on public transport and occasionally at work.

I'm looking for another pair to try out, I prefer something on the budget side. I just want to increase my point of reference of different sounding earphones, try some new things out. Which of the budget positions in the OP would be worth checking out?

I gotta be honest with you guys, you were right about the sennheiser momentum TW4s. Not about the quality or other aspects, but just the reliability. Why would anyone buy 300$ TWShitters that reliably have their left pieces break after a few months, is beyond me.

Too bad that it seems the TWShitter space seems awful now. No matter the cost, each and every single one of them is flawed (an anon pointed that out earlier and I ignored him only to waste 2 days of research). It's either:

-No good codecs, or one key codec (to me) is missing
-No BT 5.4
-Terrible battery life
-Uncomfortable fit (though it's always accompanied by something else)
-Lack of tip compatibility with other OEMs (likewise never the only issue)
-Terrible mic (or mics), usually either or with no LC3 support
-No water resistance (even IPX4 which should be the BARE minimum)
-No physical buttons or poor touch/capacitive button implementation
-Terrible reliability (wouldn't matter if they were cheap, and funnily enough the cheapos are more reliable)
-Bad ANC making them unusable (more the case for the Sennheiser TW4s)

And this is at any price point; It doesn't matter if you have 10$ or 1000$, in fact it's probably better if you spend the least amount of money possible because you might actually get the most for it.

>Flangezo won
Actually I lost pretty hard. Triple flanges turned out to be a massive meme. I mean, the smooth af treble is real, but the comfort is ass (even after weeks of getting used to), and the added warmth to the sound is just too much. That said, ER2SE is still king; it's just that adding triple flanges to an iem that is not designed around it doesn't work very well.

It's funny, because I reduced the lower frequencies with eq, but then I thought to myself: If I'm going to need eq anyway, I might as well just use normal tips and eq the treble peaks instead. And then I used my iems with single flange tips but with the triple flange eq with the reduced lower frequencies and really liked it; I loaded the preset into squig.link and it was pretty much raw DF. But I am also more relaxed in that regard, my current global eq is set to JM-1 with -0.6 dB/octave tilt, and I can still apply further tilt (basically the low- and high-shelf filters from the recent Harman paper) in my music player if I feel like it.

So basically, everything is back to normal. I know it's a meme, but currently I really just hit play and enjoy the music.

Bwowowos, I am now plug-pilled. I got my hands on a SS4W modded with a 4.4mm Topura's Cinqbes (OFC) plug instead of the usual rhodium furutech balanced connector, and the Storm actually sounded more subbassy with tamer treble, shit is crazy.

There's a new trend in Japan audio where balanced 4.4mm connectors have different plated ends. Basically, L+ is gold plated, L- is rhodium, and the R+ is gold, then R- is rhodium. Imagine what you're missing out.

amazing for the price
note weight is awesome across the full spectrum, bass is textured, treble is quite airy and has a lot of fine micronuances, but my favorite aspect is how deep and three-dimensional is the soundstage, I mean not the widest but it's convincingly spherical and has actual verticality to it, which is rare in IEMs
the biggest issue of this set was excess shoutiness but this is where triple flanges come in and reduce the shout to fully tolerable levels without killing the upper treble

Well, considering FiiO’s TWS modules don’t even have contacts on them for charging, in contrast to some other western or even chink TWS Pos which sometimes have those exposed to the elements completely, AND YET, the FiiO UTWS5’s are only IPX4 rated whereas even chink pos like the earfun air pro 4+ are IPX5 rated, no.

If you splash your chink iem with water, it will almost certainly die if it gets moisture even close to the nozzle, the 0.78 pins or the vents if applicable. Gamer tip: have cheapos to use with TWS modules. As the moisture kills them over time, your 0$ pairs will probably die anyway, but your shiny Monarch MKIV’s back home are safe and sound from both rain and jamal asking you to “see dem aeepods” not knowing he is about to inadvertedly hit a jackpot he will happily trade unknowingly for 2 ounces of crack. Unless you also buy a gun to shoot him, but that is another story.

Vivace is a cheap pos with cheap pos build, it's just tuned in a way I like. It's also 1DD so people who think drivers matter will automatically assume it's worse, and it's a collab so a little cringe.
Hexa is an old default rec for people who don't listen to music so it still gets spammed. I never liked it. Hola was the better Truthear IEM when Hexa was popular.
Pure is the new hotness, it's not as bad as Hexa and might be an improvement over the Vivace depending on what tuning you like.
Anonymous No.106531860
>>106531801
I actually really like the tuning of the Vivace and the wide staging also feels great. The bass and sub-bass is fun without being overpowering while the mids are clear enough (as far as I can tell) and the highs could be a little more sparkly? Clearer? I feel they blend together when they shouldn't and I remember liking the highs on cheaper IEMs like the EDC Pro and how it felt warmer I guess?

I'm still new to the hobby and still buying cheap IEMs until I find a sound signature I really love, so far the Vivace has been my favorite by far.

Pic related, bought the Aria 1 and the First Zero years ago when they were new and never looked into more until recently when the right side of the aria stopped working.
