my ThinkPad has a samsung RAM stick and I want to a add another one, however the same model is no longer available, so I checked online and found that crucial (micron) has RAM sticks available for my laptop model (E14 Gen 6), the specs are same - DDR5 5600Mhz CL46, it will work right?

>And you can coreboot a T60 but not a T61.
However you cannot coreboot a T60 with the ATI video card, only the one with the integrated Intel one.

Im the guy from the previous thread that is on the hunt for a T61. In a random search however, i found a T520 for double digit cost, it has no battery and a decent crack at its shell, however double digit cost so i figured "Fuck it!" and contacted the guy who sells it and im picking it up tomorrow. Im coping that it has an Nvidia GPU but the guy confirmed its on Intel HD instead, the model is 4243F79 but i cant easily find info on it so, give it to me straight, does this model have a dedicated GPU or not?

I thought they changed that a couple of years back and you could get away with it if you inserted the ATI binary blob, but that may have been a rumor.

It's going to be switchable graphics. Which is (or used to be) a lot of voodoo to configure in Linux, but if you're on Windows it won't be an issue.

Dude selling it told me it was an Intel HD 4k instead so he was either mistaken or i dont know what. Oh well, at least im getting a retro machine for basically nothing so its not a total loss and surely Oblivion and Stalker on a WinXP install will run just fine on medium settings????? I also consider splitting it into two partitions, 1 for WinXP and another for Win10 or whatever else to be able to be online if need be. Also also forgot to mention how its on 4GB RAM so its not gonna be too slow on XP but its gonna need an SSD instead of the HDD it comes with, might get a cheap 500GB one.

>>106635463
You sure? I look into the doc and i cant find 4243-F79 specifically and if it helps any, it run on BIOS 8AET55WW 1.35 dated 24/11/2011

the majority of t60's for sale are ATI graphics models. The intel graphics models are kind of rare in comparison. i don't know why this is.

how are you going to get xp working on it? install plain xp and then manually install all the drivers and shit? or are you going to use a thinkpad recovery disc?

>If you had the serial (not just the model#) you might be able to find out.
I figured as much but i bombarded the guy with questions and if i asked for that too i'd probably piss him off and thought i could go off of the model number alone, gonna really find out tomorrow once i get my hands on it.

>>106635848
If the HDD it has is not the stock one then im probably doing the former which is fine by me honestly, i like setting up PCs from the ground up software wise also, there's bound to be recovery disc ISOs accessable somewhere right? If the model is not XP compatible i can manage on Win7 but i do wish it can do XP for the nostalgia factor.

whatever you do keep in mind the following: 1) old school xp installer does not know about proper ssd alignment. you fix this by partitioning and formatting before running the installer. the installer will use the correctly aligned partition.
2) xp recovery discs for my t60 do the same thing. they do not know about proper ssd alignment. you fix this by doing the recovery, then norton ghosting the whole thing, re-partitioning, and norton ghost the image back into the properly aligned partition. this operation is pretty tricky and there are a lot of little details i am leaving out. but just ask me later if you need more info.

even without thinkpad recovery disc you could just download one of the million circulating windows xp isos with a keygend product key and then install Snappy Driver Installer Origin to autodetect and autodownload all hardware drivers.

well i didn't know about that tool until now, but i have to say i am skeptical of it. i am sure it works great, but it seems like a backdoor waiting to happen.

The program itself is open sors, the driver pack is compiled by some Russians distributed via torrents. Theoretically the drivers are signed so backdoors shouldn't be an issue, though there are ways that system got bypassed even in newer Windows versions. In any case I won't lose sleep if my retro computing installations get some rando backdoor.

Why is the Elitebook still so expensive? It's a killer design but is that why? Too bulletproof?

elitebook 8560p
dell e5550
dell e5570

These are all similar on ebay, with the dell e5570 being slightly more expensive.

dumb question, but I've upgraded the screen on both a T480 and an A485. the screens are the exact same, but backlight seems to react differently. on the T480 for example when brightness is at its lowest, backlight is completely off and I can't see anything on the screen. on the A485 even at its lowest I can still see the screen, it's just dimmer than usual but would be usable in the dark
both machines are running the same distro and same DE. anything I could do so that the A485 could behave like the T480 here?

There she is, i decided to just recovery CD it for the moment, see how it would perform with its factory OS and settings. The cons are 3 so far: 1st, its the crack on its shell shown that is a bit hard to tell from this picture, its not a huge one but i'd definitely need to replace the shell eventually. 2nd is the screen, right there at the bottom right where it looks like its "washed out" its rather distracting at best. 3rd is the keyboard that while it works ok, it seems that it might have seen some abuse as the FN key is stuck pressed but thankfully doesnt mess with anything and also the down arrow is borked and needs to be hard pressed to work. It probably gonna need quite a bit of work to be pristine but hey, 30 bucks computer, its a win still. This recovery process is stuck like this for a good 15-20 mins by the way and i cant tell if its because its on a HDD or that is a USB boot.

2bqh the shittiness started sixteen years ago when they skimped on screen quality everywhere and on the materials of the base 14 inch model

T480 is strictly better than the two models following it, same for T480s, but both are already results of years of decay

most of the supply for used Latitudes, Elitebooks and ThinkPads come from businesses getting rid of their old units. The price differences between them is mostly and indicator of how well each model sold in a respective region.
Sometimes a Latitude is much cheaper than an equivalent ThinkPad and vice versa. Or in my area some X series ThinkPads are much cheaper than T series when it's normally the other way around, or you suddenly see giant lots of a specific L series
