FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex
>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

My existing win10 installation is pretty fucked and I'm moving to a new pc so I want to to either reinstall 10 or migrate to 11. What would (you) recommend and why?
Win10 has been alright for me and Win11 direction (more spyware, more telemetry, more slurping up your data) is concerning. All the same I do want "modern" features like seamless jxl support n shit so idk.

The ways to disable things like telemetry between 10 and 11 are exactly the same i.e. tools like ShutUp10++. Also using the Enterprise or LTSC branches of it to get the mos control over the system.

What W11 version should I upgrade to if I don't care much about privacy/security/whatever but still want to minimize bloat and useless stuff running in the background? All I do is play games and torrent media.

Is a W11 IoT LTSC clean install good enough? I would prefer not getting into complicated things that could risk breakage unless it's to disable any AI bullshit.
Anonymous No.106815709 [Report]
>>106815692
Anon disabling it all is so easy that you should just do it anyway. Always use Enterprise, which IoT LTSC is a variant of.

Just use Enterprise and ShutUp10++, it's easy, you can just use the recommended options if you don't care enough to go through them. I would also recommend using WinUtil and selecting the "Set services to manual" option in the tweaks menu.

There's a guide on the massgrave blog on how to do that. There's no official way, but there's a hacky way to do it. It involves basically tricking your system into that it's repair upgrading an already existing IoT LTSC install.

Worth noting that anyone can run their own email server, the biggest annoyance or hurdle is enabling port forwarding and ensuring some level of security on that. So:
- enable port forwarding on the router
- have a mail server running and exposed
- can then send and receive email at me@134.1.3.1 = you@[your IP address]
- may even work by ip:port like admin@143.110.186.70:8080

but for real, it's known for years that Windows has counters and telemetry for interactions that you make like clicking the start button, the taskbar, opening explorer, shit like that, however, its mere existence is not necessarily evil since it's mostly used for UX data or whatever. And I say it's not necessarily evil because Linux DEs like Plasma let you opt in for similar kinds of telemetry to help them improve their UI

The real question is whether that telemetry is tied to your personal data instead of anonymized. In theory, if you set your privacy settings right, then that data will be anonymized or not sent at all, specially if you use the group policy that stops any diagnostics data, since it's specifically for enterprises.

If that doesn't give you piece of mind, then nothing will.

Windows 10 memories from ~2018: I jail-broke Cortana so I could get her to say anything. That was a somewhat meaningful experience to me, "Microsoft Cortana": before and after. (In the shitty 2020s "Halo" TV series, the Cortana character looked cuter or more beautiful in the first season than the second; in the second season she is more ugly and I guess has a different actress. I thought of even more reasons why I dislike that "Halo" series today.)

>I am looking at lubuntu, but is there anything missing, like the 'core' stuff?
I used Lubuntu for a year or two and I don't think I ever felt like stuff was missing. Problems were fixable if I came across them. (Slax Linux or Gentoo are probably more minimalist than Lubuntu; I quite dislike compiling or building from source, so Gentoo sounds like something of a nightmare to me. Gentoo does have binary packages nowadays though.)

>I am also seeing that in recent years lubuntu has worsened somewhat.
Tell me how if you feel like it. In my experience, it got better. I used older versions of Lubuntu years ago, then later switched to significantly newer versions; it all seemed to have become better.

>I am currently lookint at xfce or debian (or debian with xfce).
xfce was used in Lubuntu I think. Debian stable is probably a solid choice (though I dislike their liveboot thing which only installs the OS and doesn't let you test it).

Onedrive is fine, just don't let it be your main backup/storage because you never know when one of the pajits at Microshit may tinker with something he shouldn't or forget to maintain the machines your data is on and then all your stuff goes poof. Use a Western Digital USB hard drive (any is fine except "Easystore" and "Green" drives, those are their lowest quality) or an SSD of any reputable maker. HDDs present the best bang for the buck, but if you are going to move large numbers of files or large filesize things a lot, then an SSD will have you waiting around less time.

Additionally, Google Drive and iCloud aren't any better. They are all Hindi companies full of fools who don't quite understand the systems their predecessors left them in charge of. Hopefully they will later, but as it stands, no cloud service is as reliable as maintaining your own cloud drive at home or otherwise keeping your own physical backups. Cloud services as a *supplementary convenience* are okay.

If you store images, there is also the small risk that their scanning algorithm on the hunt for illegal content falsely identifies anything you have as [cheese pizza] and then your data will be wiped and you will be banned from their cloud service. Isn't that fun?

Specs: Intel 9900K, Asus Strix Z390i, Intel Arc A750
I can't get the iGPU to output HDMI in Windows as long as the Arc drivers are installed. I get output from the iGPU HDMI in UEFI. If I set the main display to integrated and only connect to the HDMI, windows will hang at boot until I plug something into any other port, at which point the HDMI output dies and the other displays work. Windows sees the display, I can drag windows to it and adjust resolution, but on screen I just see NO SIGNAL.
Have tried:
DDU -> install Arc drivers -> install iGPU drivers -> Arc drivers get uninstalled and iGPU works on DP only
DDU -> install iGPU drivers -> install Arc drivers -> Arc works and iGPU gets uninstalled
DDU -> Install Arc drivers -> install iGPU drivers via .inf file -> Both drivers show up in device manager, but no output from iGPU HDMI, DP works. <--- I am here now
BIOS settings are all correct.

Am I just fucked? This exact setup used to work before Intel did a big overhaul of the Arc drivers (moving from Arc Control to Intel Graphics Software), but now I seem SOL. Officially, only 10th gen and newer Intel are supported for use with Arc, but 10th gen has the same exact iGPU as 9th gen..

That's the problem, I don't find reliable information, hence I was asking here. It would be very annoying if I really have to go trough several installations of different windows editions to find the edition that is compatible but the least bloated then on the other hand supported where Windows debloated and configured for privacy is still enough such that features aren't too broken despite also Nvidia. I've read IIRC on Adobe documentation that they would again support compatibility with Win 10 LTSC IoT just to find out, nope, not the case for Lightroom Classic.

Maybe s.o. can help me out despite not being familiar with actual Adobe software requirements:

The only way to guarantee compatibility for the foreseeable future would be to run a GAC edition. My rec would be to debloat Enterprise (offline or online) install because then you still get ~3y of security updates on any given feature release: you can stay back but still have a one click button to update to the next release when support is dropped. I can share what I do to debloat if that helps but just stay away from downloadable ISOs and anything super aggressive.
>Are changed Windows editions with MAS reliable or is this different compared to a reinstallation of the other editions?
It will be slightly different because the OOTB setups are slightly different but in general they are the same. Not all editions can be changed into any other edition though, but all of the GAC editions can freely switch to any other.

Thanks man! I'd really appreciate if you could share some of what you do in debloating. But don't go through too much trouble. So far I was using OOSU10, at times added host entrirs, disabled and removed and blocked by manual steps some of the Windows features after installation of Windows. With Windows 11 I feel like that's not enough and regardless I have hated with Windows 10 that autumn-upgrades revert many of the privacy settings.

So far I've read through the pastebin links just am not sure what to go for and what to trust. I should be experienced enough to understand stets even where you just point me into directions. Although I can't remember too well how I did similar stuff already, a few years ago I had helped a friend to minimize Win 7 ISO-file such that an installation met the very limited hardware of some chromebook he wanted to set-up from new for his daughter.

Already with I was on a dead end using an official ISO as this had not allowed me to switch to German language what is a requirement my Dad unfortunately has.

I use a script based on tiny11builder to "optimize offline" plus after install I will load my preferred GPOs (originally based on Windows Security Baseline but you probably don't want all of those like the firewall lock so WFC / other frontends won't work and requiring all USBs to be Bitlocker encrypted), a few installers (Office Deployment Tool, and mostly other engineering software) and some other scripts to do after-software-install configuration like SlimBrave.

The tiny11builder-based script is a bit trimmed down from what's on GH (e.g. I keep Edge, and some other things like reserved storage) but also is a lot more aggressive in removing ProvisionedAppxPackages (a lot of the preinstalled software), features and capabilities. LTSC still comes with less PAPs than this but IIRC its things like no default photo viewer, old notepad and calculator and less image/video codecs. Here's the part that removes these https://pastebin.com/n4yr7qbh and everything here can be applied to a current install but the DISM commands would have to be updated as such (i.e. /image:* -> /online). I also modify IntegratedServicesRegionPolicySet.json in System32 so that Edge is uninstallable from settings everywhere not just in EU, which is a nicer way to remove than what a lot of scripts do to forcibly remove it:

Some tools like CTTs MicroWin go a bit harder in disabling system services and things but its to the point of obsessing over process count instead of actually improving the experience.

Unfortunately the OP is pretty badly maintained.
https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator is a very nice tool and may do everything that you want. Otherwise all the other tools in the debloat paste are either fairly manual (modified tiny11builder), not very good or limited in scope (winutil, privacy.sexy, O&OSU10++, private-secure-windows) or just bad ideas (NTLite is paid, Ameliorated, AtlasOS) and I don't understand how they made it into the paste.

If you want security then Windows Security Baseline is a good start, it is a set of group policy options that you will have to apply to a running install using the script MS supplies as part of it. For telemetry O&OSU10++, privacy.sexy and other software-specific scripts are your best and easiest options. For prepackaged software removal your best goto is DISM which will require learning a couple of commands and taking care to not remove something required by your workflow. The combined tools like winutil are fine but not replacements for any of the other more specific tools so their usefulness is limited.

An EFI System Partition (ESP) is a special, hidden partition on a storage drive required for computers using UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) firmware to boot. It contains critical boot-related files and bootloaders for the operating system and other applications that the UEFI firmware loads to start the computer. The ESP is formatted with a FAT file system, usually FAT32, and serves as the initial "interface" to get the operating system started before the OS itself loads.

maybe not at the moment but I'm sure the windows corporate fags are rapidly trying to force an "update" that kills WIN10 systems, and to detect systems which run it.

I'm angry that the windows service model is built around planned obsolescence, where basically everyone gets windows free with new devices, and windows makes their money by killing perfectly functional hardware. And every windows version since XP has been worse from that point of view, I already run Linux distros on several machines and really only keep this craptop on WIN10 for utility purposes.

It's not really worth running an emulated win10 on a partition, it's not worth the space.

You know, for local shops, the pizza shop ordering system runs on WIN10. If someone wants to hack them and put stupid pizza orders in then one free 9000+ topping pizza to them I guess. They will never remove that because businesses need it. They might remove it from Pro, but never from Enterprise/Education.

Pro is a business edition, it's intended for local small business computers, while enterprise is intended for large corporations, and education for educational institutions. None of them will have domain joins removed. The only edition that will is Home, as it's the only consumer edition.

Pro and Pro for Workstations being available for purchase in retail doesn't mean they're not business editions.

No, in-place upgrades don't require reformats. It hasn't needed that since Vista.

Stop listening to braindead freetard niggers. Literally everything they say about Windows is a flat out lie.

Slightly more specifically its a "secure storage" for things like decryption keys so its a lot more general than just storing a bitlocker key. Its designed such that the data itself is inaccessible directly by the CPU or otherwise externally such that no other processes (or hardware tools) will be able to ascertain your bitlocker key or anything else stored on it not by them.

Even with a bitlocker passphrase your system is a lot more secure with TPM because it will still require the original hardware.

They would still need to wipe the TPM but yes they could even sell the hardware on.

To your MS account. If you only make a local account in the OOBE then bitlocker won't be enabled by default as you will have to manually save the recovery keys.

So as long as I use a local account I can swap hard drives in and out like on win10? That's good to know.

If you use a Rufus made USB you can just disable Bitlocker running at all anyway alongside removing MS account usage or removing requirements for 11.

What can cause Windows to have about 30 seconds of "black screen, but monitor on" before the login screen is visible? I've seen it happen on a few systems

In the case of my own, it happens with the exception of
- rebooting after a BSOD
- the next boot after a (big?) update
- As I've recently discovered, rebooting to the UEFI

In 2017 and 2018, what was the most popular way to generate these files in Windows: .md5, .sha1, .sfv

? I want to know this for regenerating some lost data that I didn't create. Was WinRAR used to make them? Those files are hashes and checksum of other files.
