Reminder: XP IS CONFIRMED SPYWARE-FREE
XP has no telemetry inside, atleast from what we know from the leaked source code builds, right?
Why not just use XP? A modern NAT does wonders for security, and I still remember when you fags said you wouldn't move to Windows Vista and stay on XP forever.

We have the source code. If XP had backdoors or telemetry inside, it would've been exposed and immediately fixed in forks, right? That's the power of open source, after all. You can just make your server's backend open source and random people will see it and fix it for you rather than exploit it before it's fixed!

The fact that /g/ is so obsessed with running old versions of windows to 'beat the man' has got to be one of the dumbest glowie psyops I've ever seen and is true evidence of how fucking stupid the average user of this board is.

Running windows XP at this point is like driving around an old 1971 ford pinto with broken door locks, and then pulling into the parking lot of an inner city public park and sleeping in it overnight, hoping that minorities don't just open the door and rape your ass while they steal your shit. If I were an NSA agent and had to, for some godawful reason, break into the devices of your average shitbrain /g/ user, I would be fucking AROUSED to learn that they're using unpatched windows XP. My cock would grow to enormous raping size and I would stick it straight through one of many gaping security flaws and right up anon's butt.

If you really care about avoiding telemetry and glowing ass-sniffers just use some trustworthy version of linux. Fuck you can even compile it yourself if you want to make sure that nobody has stuck their dick in it. you can even make it look like XP if you're really so autistic about it.

MyPal68 makes use of the current uBlock origin rather than the legacy port, and overall can handle complex stuff that NewMoon won't (save for cloudflare captchas), but it lacks the polish and feature set of NewMoon.

The frustrating part for me is that most of these browsers target much older hardware than what you'd normally use for a high end XP build, so optimizations are lacking to say the least.

Right? Even Windows XP has a firewall, which itself will be behind a router, provided you're not opening your device to all and sundry you've little to fear. We're a long way from Windows 98 boxes mounting SMB drives to the unfiltered Internet.
The main source of hax will be from outdated browsers and malware, so discretion will be key. And if you're tecchie enough to care about XP, you'll have adequate discretion.

Honestly, the only limiting thing for XP is 3gb RAM max, every website on the Internet will chew that up pretty quickly. I've managed to create a workaround by setting up a RAMDisk but it's only 2gb if someone could make XP address 32gb of memory I would be onboard 100 percent.

It’s interesting to see people slamming XP without referencing specific unpatched problems.
XP is probably fine even without a NAT since, back then, you could *find* someone not using NAT on their home router.
New telemetry and spyware aside, most problems with XP were patched ages ago, and just imagine how many more problems and attack surfaces were introduced in subsequent years.. that we even know about.
Imagine the microsoft devs coming in now what their capabilities are like.

>Fuck you can even compile it yourself if you want to make sure that nobody has stuck their dick in it
You're not auditing the entire Linux kernel all by yourself

That aside, its not about security as much as its about control and independence. Linux, for all its talk of freedom, is fundamentally designed to rely on central servers for pretty much everything. All your software has to come from the distro's official repository. Sure you can use different repositories, but you're still using someone else's repository. Even compiling yourself, you're still using git to pull code from someone else's server. The only way you can have all these files saved locally is to host your own repository, which is an absurd amount of work for what it is.

Compare this to Windows, where you just keep a CD with all the software you want on it, and it just works. It will work regardless of what Microsoft or the original software developers say.

And that's not to mention how keeping your software up to date is *mandatory* on linux. On Windows, if you want to use an old program for whatever reason, you can and it will just work. On Linux? Too bad, even if the repository still has the program, all its dependencies broke compatibility with it years ago, and old versions of those aren't available, and would break all your new programs. So the only way to use the old software is to find the source code, and painstakingly port it to the new standards.

>MyPal68 makes use of the current uBlock origin rather than the legacy port,
Last time I tried it I had to use a very old version of the Quantum version of Ublock, since MyPal68 couldn't run Firefox Extensions meant for versions newer than 68. Have they fixed that since then?

Regardless, Ublock Legacy is more than adequate for browsing. Its still actively maintained alongside the rest of the extensions of the Palemoon add on store.

>The frustrating part for me is that most of these browsers target much older hardware than what you'd normally use for a high end XP build,
Define normal for a high end XP build. I would say Core 2, Athlon 64 x2, or maybe a quad core if you're feeling extravagant. Those only have SSE3 and maybe SSE4 (and 3d-Now in AMD's case). So if you want to target them, its not much a performance hit to go with SSE2 instead for the sake of supporting Athlon XP, Pentium 4, and Pentium D processors, which are all completely usable in the current year. Even if you're using something anachronistic like an AMD FX or Core i series processor, XP lacks AVX support, so you can't compile with support for it even if you wanted to. Plus a lot of that hardware doesn't even support XP.

The router does all the connecting to the internet for you. Your PC never actually sees the wider internet, just the traffic the router allows in, and most NATs are set from the factory to block all inbound traffic by default. So any of those probe a random IP attacks are going to get blocked by your router. The only traffic it does let in is from connections established through outbound communication by your PC. At that point all you have to worry about is having a working router, and making sure there aren't any malicious programs on your computer making connections to botnets.

If you meant how no router is unsafe even on modern windows, I say that because Windows has always had bad security. There's a reason web hosts always use Linux or BSD.

>So why does using a computer in 2025 often feel worse than it did in 2005?
Bullshit. In the 2000s you could hardly play games while your web browser was open, due to only having one core, two max. Now it doesn't even matter.

Nigger are you for real? There's not a single office suite on this planet that would be more backwards compatible than M$'s shit. Doc files are the same as they were 40 years ago, I've yet to see even a docx being widely used and even then docx is 20 years old.

I'll give you that driver support is lacking , but if you're trying to use xp with modern software, software compatibility is not something that will be any worse, unless you are intending to run 16bit applications , in which case why do you need more than 4gb of ram per process, just use a vm or dosbox etc if you need that. activation is non-issue in current year. using xp on a semi modern machine is purely an eccentric endeavour anyway.

Latest, but forget about the installer since they clearly dropped XP compatibility at some point. I've been letting Freenet (well it's called Hyphanet now, but I'm sure you actually meant that too) for centuries so it just kept updating itself in the background so that wasn't an issue. I also run a hacked build of Java 8 that's actually pretty recent so shit just works.

>but if you're trying to use xp with modern software,
I was talking about old software. I've heard that the version of WOW64 used in it had some issue which newer versions like Vista's and 7's didn't have. A lot of old software is 32-bit only anyways.

I'm not that anon wanting more RAM btw. Personally I think 4GB per process and more with PAE is enough.

> activation is non-issue in current year
Its a non issue on 32-bit XP, which had its activation cracked five years ago. With XP 64 you have to activate by phone or use one of those shady activator programs.

I can play Hl2 with a modern web browser open just fine on my 2003 P4 system. Something era appropriate with a 50MB or so RAM usage wouldn't be an issue at all.

Were there just that many people who didn't use the internet at all up till that point? So we have this demographic group of X, zoomer, millennial, and baby boomer who only used the internet first in 2014? Actually "use" it now?
