Hey /g/,
My brother wants me to install Arch for him. He’s got an HP EliteBook x360 1030 G2, which should be simple enough except it turns out he has Secure Boot enabled and doesn’t know the BIOS password.
So, there are basically two ways I could get Arch installed:

1. Remove the CMOS battery (I tried explaining this to him in detail, but he doesn’t trust the process).
2. Piggyback a Debian ISO and grab the Microsoft-signed shim that way. (I’ve never done this before, but it sounds fun to learn.)

Not sure what to do yet. I might just tell him it can’t be done with basedboot in place and install Debian instead. He’s only doing this because Windows 10 keeps yelling that his PC can’t upgrade to 11.

You can probable just unplug the machine and let it sit for a while instead of actually removing the cmos battery. It should have the same effect, right?

read through the arch wiki on it, specifically this stuff:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface/Secure_Boot#Using_a_signed_boot_loader

to be honest, this sort of thing is not something i'd feel comfortable doing myself, as there's a risk of bricking your mobo. maybe you feel more comfortable, i don't know

Reading up more of this myself and it seems this isn't the case, oops. Apparently there's a button for some mobos though, so you could look into his and see if it has that.

Yeah, I was gonna tell you the BIOS admin password to the non-volatile EEPROM or NVRAM, which doesn’t care if the CMOS battery dies.

Call him an nigger and remove the CMOS

hate all the faggots that defended secure boot when battlefield 6 beta (dogshit game btw, glad I didn't pay for it) dropped. Couldn't even run my usb nixos that I MADE ON THIS VERY PC because I made it before secure boot....fuck that dumb shit I'll turn it back off and not play any game that thinks I should do otherwise.

Don't you just love being unable to boot anything but the drives you had connected when you enabled secure boot and any image you make on THAT PC ONLY after sb enabled? Isn't it so nice that you could have a hard drive failure and then be up shit creek? So glad redditors defended us from the dangers of not enabling secure boot and kowtowed for no reason but a video game!!

Why would you not just force Windows 11 on?

`setup.exe /auto upgrade /product server`.

I argue, it should be baked into the OS, not the motherboard.
