independent of this particular case where the contributors have literally been running the project:
external contributors expecting gratitude is by far one of the most annoying things about open source.

from the perspective of a maintainer, reviews for new contributors are often much more expensive than just doing it yourself. even after a review, the resulting code isn't as consistent and maintainable as if a maintainer had written it. most contributors never stick around, so the knowledge transfer benefit of reviews is lost. when the contributor leaves, somebody else is stuck with maintaining code that they didn't write, which is inherently more expensive. external contributions also tend to invert your priorities because you're suddenly spending time on something that was likely far lower in your priority stack.

the best thing any external contributor can do is not to approach the contribution with the idea that the maintainer of the project should be grateful, but instead that you are adding a burden to the project that will hopefully benefit users.
your goal should be to make that burden as light as possible, by choosing parts of the project you contribute to that don't require tricky reviews for your first contributions, investing a lot of energy up front to ensure your code is good and making it reviewable by documenting it, its purpose and related design tradeoffs well.
if you do this for a while and you stick around, you will build trust with the maintainer team, and the process becomes easier for everyone involved.

It depends on whether you want the original experience or not. Most engines besides chocolate (pure vanilla) and crispy (basically chocolate + 640 x 480) add extra UI stuff to show you how many secrets/kills/items you got up to that point in a level. They also raise the FPS and give you higher resolutions, widescreen, smoothing, lighting, mouselook, flashier effects, etc. Gzdoom is one of the more popular ones with the modern stuff built in.
