Not a problem for me, I was doing that since 2005 (I have 2 commercial VSTs + 1 more important standalone commercial program + lots of open source projects), but I just worked on my own until 2022. Then I finally ran out of money due to being unable to get sales going again and ended up taking the first job I could as an industrial embedded C dev. Now that I'm gonna get laid off due to a policy that everyone must work in office while I moved to a distant city I'm thinking I should find a job that suits my skills better, I just don't really know where to look. I wonder how well it pays too but my current job (in Poland) only pays $64k/year so I don't need anything higher. If I don't find any VST job I'll apply to industrial audio processing jobs, usually they're about car sound systems, seems like they pay better.

I've done a pretty good job of avoiding using DAWs, only using Renoise and Reaper for testing (but mostly SAVIHost for convenience) and Ableton Live sometimes too, so I don't know all that much about how they work, I only concern myself with the programming and basic testing aspects, and I didn't even use the VST 2.x API directly because I used a multi-target library (iPlug/WDL, but next time I'll probably use CPLUG) to also make AudioUnit plugins.

Conceptually it's easy to do, the sound is processed through a callback (you get an input sound buffer and an output sound buffer to fill up) and with the window/interface you can do whatever you want, either create your own window or use the handle provided by the host and then you can even do hardware accelerated graphics with that.
