Whoever you watched recently, you probably have more interest in, so they float to the top. The channels you haven't watched recently sink down. The channels that haven't posted in ages drop to the bottom. If you click on the "Subscriptions >" link you can sort the full list by name/activity/relevance.

Strictly alphabetizing doesn't necessarily work because channels change their name all the time.

The worst part about platforms like these is that the choice simply is not yours.
I don't get to decide where the person I like uploads their videos. So even if I change, I have to wait for everyone else to as well.
It's the same problem as chat services/clients, I don't get to decide what the other person uses, we are forced to either not engage with each other or compromise.
I don't know how to solve this problem, especially considering the platform owners specifically do not want to make exporting or cross platform integrations easy. They want you vendor locked in, they want to exploit this fact.

Every search engine blows now, this is common knowledge. Doesn't matter if it's Google or Bing or even Yandex, they all conveniently started to suck ass at finding relevant results around the same time. It's insane how often I want to find an old or obscure video and I simply can't. The top results are videos from youtube superstar faggots with a gorillion subscribers where the term I searched for is either completely or only barely related.
After that you get a bunch of "shorts" clogging up the results because we gotta compete with tiktok on the same platform as our long form content for some reason.
Beyond that you're officially in no mans land where nothing is related to your query and 90% of the videos are presented by ganesh kumar speaking in some unholy combination of hindi and english. Ganesh has kindly titled the video and tagged it in English so that all those western hindi speakers get to enjoy his content too.

I don't get it. Was there really that much forbidden knowledge hidden away on yt that they needed to lobotomize search?
They already censor stuff by straight up removing it from the results page, surely that would have sufficed if they just wanted to suppress certain things. Instead they went full scorched earth and now no-one can find anything.
I just wish I had the foresight to see this coming before it happened so I could have at the very least bookmarked those cool videos if not use yt-dlp and save them.

I just started a couple of playlists and now they hid the save button in the burger menu, the save button doesn't show if you already saved the video, the save to box has such a small max height that it only shows 4 playlists without scrolling and if you want to add a video to 2 or more playlists you have to reopen the thing after every add.

I was able to write a simple script to increase the height of the save to box at least but I'm no software dev.

I use dailymotion (has anime episodes and youtube channel backups), niconico douga (anime and vocaloid), bilibili (has some cool anime musicals, mmd animations and also trailers for stuff that barely makes it out of japan), vimeo (needs more videos but has good stuff too) and maybe reddit (I like the pixel art tutorial animations) and pinterest (has tutorials and also youtube shorts and tiktok anime edits I can save right on my anime boards). They all have some stuff youtube doesn't or at least not in the same form, so even if youtube didn't suck (I got it patched with the ReVanced Manager so from a user's perspective it's fine for me rn) there's still a pull towards other platforms for me.

I searched for the guys username with "transformer impression" or "optimus prime impression" and of course modern youtube doesn't know what the fuck it's doing so it ignores his username and just serves me videos about transformers.
Didn't matter how specific I made the query the search engine would just decide I'm some kind of mouth breather and I accidentally entered those three other words while trying to search for transformers.

I can deal with 90% of content on there being slop by simply not watching it. However I can't deal with search being broken, preventing me from accessing that sweet sweet 10%.
