picrel is a screenshot of my terminal. it's currently running a script that uses chatgpt to shorten the bible down to 666 characters or less

you can only fit so much of the bible into the prompt at once so in the picrel there's one prompt used per chunk. 1140 prompts for round one. i'm using 3.5 so it should cost like 25 cents, lol

i'll post the new, updated, condensed bible when it's done

Next time you do a non-time-critical operation with an openai llm, use the batch API, and the -nano version of the current model, gpt-5-nano which is $.05/MITk, $.40/MOTk, vs 3.5 turbo which is $.5/Mitk, $1.5/Motk.

The token limit for gpt-5-mini is 400k, so with a kjv bible length of 789k words, 1.5 MTok corpus, you could have done it book by book using 66 prompts in stead of the 1.1k+ prompts you made. (If you went by chapter, there should be 1189 chunks.)

The longest book with 42k words is Psalms, and even that is ~ 1/4 of the token use, to be on the safe side, I'd have split it in two.

I used GPT5 to build me a reading list of the Bible and it struggled for nearly an hour to actually include every book in the catholic canon. I was dealing with it hallucinating left and right and while I’m reasonably confident I got it to finally get all the books, I won’t be sure until later next year when I finish it, hopefully.
