We have a lot of Latin Americans and Chinese on our team. I'm kind of done working with Indians if I can avoid it though.

Actually, second generations are perfectly fine. But I basically refuse to work with the first generations. They aren't Americans.

If you spend all day everyday making each heel pipelines, you're basically stuck in a big f500 role. You're incredibly crippled because you don't know front end or a general backend architecture. Big Data people basically can't enter startup without a reality check.

I think my biggest problem is that a lot of big data engineers need great processes in place to work. They they suck at wearing multiple hats. They also aren't good product people. My biggest takeaway from the interview was that he didn't give a shit about the product and was just going to do what he normally does everyday. We don't need that. We need someone that puts their ear close to the mouth of the customer and account reps

This is my biggest gripe with FAANG type corpos. 9 times out of 10, after you make it through the retarded interview process with LC hards out the ass, that's what you end up doing for years - data pipelines or webdev so basic a fresh CS grad with no experience could handle it without an issue.

yeah...interviews are basically calling people out on their bullshit resumes, EVERYONE LIES except for the people who underestimate themselves (its so fucking backwards)
the first time i ever did technical interviews the guy we ended up hiring (not a saar) answered some questions kinda funny and i gave him the benefit of the doubt as to what he meant
that was a HUGE mistake that i paid dearly for
he was very good a saying random tech jargon he thought applied to the situation, but didnt actually know what he was doing
8 months later, every client site he had ever visited called us to tell us never to send that guy again and we eventually fired him...
i had been complaining for at least 5 of those 8 months once i realized it wasnt just a learning curve issue

Nta, but there is a difference between a big corpo SWE, who's only concern is making sure his bug/feature queue never gets too full and someone who actually understands and cares about how the shit he's doing day to day affects the product and the users. At a startup that basically what separates great engineers from mediocre ones.
