imo the best jobs have a low indian count. when there's few of them, they won't be able to inflict their toxicity over the entire company. best coworkers have always been asian, and then whites/latinos. the only time i feared for my safety was when i was teamed up with a black woman who had psychological issues and would lose it frequently, but was hard to fire due to discrimination laws. there are also some really smart black coworkers though, don't get me wrong, it's just kinda rare.

I was recently transferred over from my old team to the devops team. Before I worked for a small startup as sort of a nebulous cloud operations/sysadmin/general IT guy (no CS background), but now we got acquired and I was shipped over to the devops team after a few months of mostly fucking around. We're a satellite team and so most of the guys float and do work for the teams that they themselves got transferred from before. My old team is in utter disarray so most days I don't have anything from them that I need to do, so I'm mostly just fucking around. I feel like I'm barely learning anything and I'm worried about when my manager's finally going to give me real shit to do.

In my experience, with recruiters specifically, is that they REALLY want to hear a number from you. I tried doing the whole "I'm flexible and open to discuss with you" weasel during an initial interview with a recruiter for a defense position and they doubled down and we're like "just getting an initial number would be good to get the ball rolling". It's extra annoying too because in my area compensation is based on company not based on difficulty of work so it's a guessing game to try and not look too worthless or too expensive at the same time.

In this case, I was to diagnose a PC that wouldn't boot. It wasn't the RAM, resetting CMOS didn't help, and this PC had onboard graphics. I was about to try swapping the CPU, going so far as to take off the cooler, when I recalled another odd incident and decided to try replacing the power supply.

So then I had to get the cooler back on. I somehow got the idea that I would have to take the motherboard off (this looked to be a pretty cheap case). I got most of the motherboard screws off before I learned that the motherboard does indeed come off.

And to top it off, it somehow never occurred to me to inform the customer of the diagnostic fee until the job is done. I got too caught up in the assumption that the job was going to be a quickie until it was clear it wasn't

Yep, I had a great job with an awesome Work/Life balance and the company was acquired. Guess what happened next? Layoffs, and I was impacted. It was the comfiest 2.5 years of my career, even if there were times when I had to put a lot of hours the company knew how to reward that effort. Now I'm a contractor so because of the nature of contracts I'm looking for something more permanent, but I'm very picky about them. I just want to chill and have a normal job with normal demands and working hours.
