How close is China from not needing Nvidia gpus with their own chinese chips?

their most advanced fab is on "7nm". but feature of the "7nm" (gate, pitch) is similar to tsmc 12nm. nvidia is current on tsmc N4. Also their machine still use DUV which has a big transition gap to EUV machine. I would say at around a decade just because they are still using multipatterning like with intel 14nm++

they already have plenty of flops for what they need. frontier models are a waste of money, however small models dedicated to specific tasks (face recognition, license plate recognition, behavior analysis, production line defects detection) have real application potentials.

i did an internship in a military contractor in europe that were able to fit a target recognition model on autonomous weapons that ran well on arm cortex cpus

Still a long way to go, but they're working there
I think they're working more towards the new chip technology rather than playing catching up with the current chip tech, which is just really hard.
They want to pull the EV thing but with chips

Why doesn't China just reverse engineer Nvidia's GPUs? They managed to copy soviet jets, why not a GPU?
