I would argue it's also because of the intermediary university step that is increases required for most anything outside of manual labor jobs these days. In an ideal free market workers can adjust based on where there is demand. Putting 4 years between you and demand really fucks everything up. High demand for software developers? Everyone goes into CS then comes out to find the market is already flooded but there "expertise" in stuck. If companies would give low paid apprenticeships for new workers right out of high school it would mean not taking on huge debt while simultaneously making some amount of money, making connections in the field during training, companies can hire at low risk (low pay for a short term position, if the person sucks they can dump them after a year or two, if the person is good they found a good employee), and you would get more applicable training than college while having a quicker response to market pressures. College should be reserved for a very small proportion of the population whose career goals are academic or heavily knowledge based (physician).

Something I've known is the right thing to do but havent had the COURAGE and GUMPTION to do for a long time is coming up in my new job, and it's a job I don't feel i deserve nor am qualified for, so I've been brave enough to be weak.
