>"battery life for linux sucks"
>switch to linux
>battery lasts three times longer than on windows 11
Where did this retarded idea that battery life is better on Windows come from?

It's just Microshill propaganda. 99% of the memes about Linux haven't been true since the 90s, but Microsoft wants people to keep believing them so they'll be afraid to drift from the Windows cattle farm.

linux did cpu frequency scaling until year 2007 ish?

Do you mean evidence of Linux having bad battery life, or evidence of Microsoft shilling?

How would one optimize battery life on a laptop with dgpu? I saw that there is nvidia prime where you basically choose the apps manually which run on the dgpu, the problem I have with this is that when I want the dgpu to overtake the igpu for the entire DE and apps e.g. when connecting an external monitor, this switch doesn't automatically happen. I only have this work when the hdmi cable is connected since boot. Using arch and gayland btw.

I have a minisforum v3 and the battery goes from 3-4 hours in windows to fucking 8 in Linux. Its insane.
it also doesn't have that hybrid sleep shit that wakes your laptop up inside your bag to run a windows update.
>you can just--
if i have to fuck around with services and registry entries and whatever the fuck else just to trick windows into thinking i'm a large corporation just to get it to not fucking update in my goddamn bag then it fucking sucks dudes.

As far as I know this is a retarded windows issue where if your laptop was being charged before you put it to sleep, and then unplug it it will still think its connected to a charger and thus run whatever it wants in the background. I always unplug my laptop, wait like 10 seconds and then put it to sleep and I never had the heating up in bag issue again. Also activate battery saver to run always, this means it will be on even at 100% (not when plugged to a charger obviously) and stop a bunch of garbage windows background shit from running

there's plenty of images with more recent examples but this one shows just how far back they've been doing this shit

No; hybrid sleep literally wakes up the laptop to check for updates. Its a "feature".

That's what ultimately pushed me into finally switching to Linux - if I have to do a bunch of tinkering and hackery to make modern Windows less unstable/invasive/tedious, I figured that I might as well put that energy into getting the hang of Linux instead since it'd be similar type and degree of work on a modern distro.

If you make up every benchmark, you can get infinite battery life.

From people who were around back when Linux consumed 10x more watts than Windows on the same hardware and nobody knew how to fix it.
If things have gotten better in the mean time I'm very happy to hear it. (I haven't used Linux on a laptop in like 10 years)

Its something that used to be true, but Linux has gotten better at power management (at least with well supported hardware) while at the same time Windows has gotten worse. We are now at the point where Linux, running Windows games through a compatibility layer, gets better battery life and better performance (Cyberpunk in the pictured benchmark is also getting 20% better FPS for example) than Windows running native applications.

It USED to be the case where laptop battery optimization on Linux was poor. But that was about 20-23 years ago.

Linux has come a LONG way since the 1990-2000's.

What I hate is that 1% which is usually true, but some faggots will use it as fuel for anti Linux shitposting. Take for example thumbnail support in the gtk file picker, you can only see files as a list, with a tiny image preview on the right, and it's been like this since forever. However, even though there are solutions like a patched gtk3 file picker or alternative programs like pikeru, the issue will be presented as unfixable and repeated ad nauseum, to the point people who aren't familiar with Linux will take it as a fact, and refuse to give it a try because now their perception of Linux as a whole is tainted by shilling/shitposting. Also, I remember looking at screenshots from /g/ in the late 00s and there was already people shilling Apple and shitting on Linux, so I guess this kind of retarded behaviour isn't new.

I wonder how much of this is due to old / outdated advice. I tried running TLP on my laptop and it did nothing for battery life, and just made the computer slower. Installed power-profiles-daemon and then battery life was immediately better than windows.

>just dim your screen 80% bro
>just cap your cpu at 900mhz bro
>just turn off bluetooth and wifi bro
>just turn off your touchpad and mouse bro
>just put your ssd in deep slumber mode to increase i/o latency and make database access unusable bro
>just cripple your OS and make your hardware unusable to own the Windows Chuds bro
linux groomers are something else.

Battery life using linux used to be really bad. The CPU would run at full power when not using something like TLP. Even with TLP the battery life would be worse than windows. The various distros and DEs have corrected for this so now even hibernate works. This is the best time for people to switch to Linux.
