Americans are white. Europeans hardly ever referred to themselves as white. For them having pale skin was more of a characteristic than a full-blown identity. Just like there are African that don't identity with black identity but clearly have a phenotype which would be labelled as black in the new world.

American justice system leaves a lot to be desired. It's all about protecting the rights of the people from government overreach but this really makes people mad when the person is obviously guilty and the justice system is seen handling them with silk gloves and protecting them from the the righteous anger of the public. So the American public would often try to take matters into its own hands before the justice system could remove the guilty person from their grasp
