Mostly right. Something that's under studied or appreciated is how Southern the Lower Midwest was prior to yankoeuropoor mass immigration. Also, there was a second wave of Southern migration into the Midwest, mainly from the Appalachian parts of the South from the 1920s-1960s. However lots of the second wave of migrants went back South after the factories in the Midwest started closing.

The South held onto slavery because most slave owning families had migrated south after the North abolished it, leading to the South having a high concentration of slave owners who all happened to be extremely wealthy as a result of slavery and had tight control over southern politics
