Manchuria was Japan's most prized colonial possession. It's China's oil industry and one of their most industrialized regions to the point the Soviets handing it over to Mao was vital in the PRC's victory.

The Japanese high command had no idea what the atom bombs were and actually wanted to keep going even though we were dropping nukes. It wasn't until the Soviets invading Manchuria was the writing on the wall for most of the leadership and even then some of them wanted to keep going.
