Ok seriously, why is India the way that it is? The pollution, the garbage, the stench, the rapes...it seems like every third world stereotype on steroids. Does it really all come back to the caste system?

South Asia suffers from all of the same problems as Sub-Saharan Africa, except that instead of being 54 countries, it's just 3 big countries and 3 small ones, one of which is known for currently being the world's most populous country, so it makes it difficult to get people to stop staring at it.
I'm not Indian or anything, but I feel like people would be just as horrified or even more so if Tanzania, Nigeria, or Mali had a billion people each and 1/3 of them had Internet access.
The only problem is that we erroneously believe that India should be more civilized than it actually is simply because its name is more familiar to us than that of any African country that we automatically filter out as "savage" or uncivilized.

The value of a human life is simply lower the more there are. People will never accept this at face value because they are afraid of the implication but it's simply true.

Basically they adopted modern economics and industrial technology without modernising their society. Europe, America, even fucking China adapted and changed their societies to better fit with industrial society - closing down and abandoning social, legal, and political institutions that were no longer relevant or useful and couldn't be adapted to become relevant or useful. It might not have been done as effectively as it could have been, or been framed and administered under an ideological framework you don't like, but it did happen in one way or another.

It's not 'just' the caste system, but the caste system was definitely a big part of it, with the upper tiers of Hindu society being unwilling to lose their religiously ordained place at the top of society.

I've thought a lot about this exact phenomenon and I don't really think it holds up. Obviously theres a lot of shitholes in the world, but the thing that stands out in particular about india is how fucking proud they are of it. Africa is very rapidly developing and improving their quality of life because they actually acknowledge their issues and therefore do their best to fix them. They haven't finished developing yet. The stereotypes of blacks and browns are true within the big picture that industrialization is an ongoing transition in the world as a whole. We seem to be living in a time of decadence, decay and impending doom but even that is temporary. You don't know how much Indians will reduce entropy in their environment given another hundred years of modernity. Do you ever consider, maybe one day you'll be raging at 3rd worlders for using automation to develop with less effort? Do you ever consider, maybe the gap between countries a mere 30-40 years after the Cold War ended will one day seem old-fashioned? Just because you can't predict the far future doesn't mean it's not coming. And don't call me a whigoid either because the fact that growth and development characterizes human history is neutral, and exists without a value judgement. India was also a place of high culture until it went to shit at some point in modernity. I don't know much about Indian history, but I can imagine it was probably raped the hell and back by various Middle Eastern countries taking it over and interbreeding with the people there, and Europeans coming and rapidly industrializing and further mixing with the population was probably the final nail in the coffin.

Basically. Dozens of Hindu kingdoms and principalities had been fighting each other for millennia, until they were conquered by the Mughals (central Asian, primarly Uzbek, Muslim raiders turned conquerors) who formed the Mughal empire that held India under its bootheel for centuries. While there was a rising Maratha independence movement against them by the end of their reign the arrival of Europeans (French, Portuguese, Dutch, and eventually British) completely upended everything for them, and they seem to still be getting over it.

With other underdeveloped places the people are usually very upset with the situation, there's constant protests in the MENA region for example, Africa has a coup every other week, even Latam and SEA have a shit ton of protests and there's a genuine vibe of "we don't like our current situation, we want to improve" amongst the people.

What shocked me is seeing that really nice mountain path that youtuber was on with an Indian guide, but it was absolutely covered in garbage. Do they just not care? Or are they unable to comprehend the consequences of littering?

Such a shame because I'm sure India would be a nice country to visit to see the historic places, but with the filth and excess of male population due to sex-selective abortion in portions of the country, I definitely wouldn't go there especially with any females because they'd be groped and potentially raped. I hope other South Asian countries aren't as bad as what I've seen of India.

As an aside, was watching another YT video about migrants in England littering, covering their council housing common areas with trash. Now, these were Muslims, so they thought that wherever the trash landed was "the will of Allah" so they discarded it carelessly. I don't mind Muslims, and have even been to the local masjid/mosque to learn about them more, but this strikes me as utterly backward and primitive thinking. I regularly grab small bits of trash while walking around town and put them in the garbage, with the thought that if everyone did it (Kantian moral imperative) then we would have pristine streets. But there is always people (of every race) who will litter and toss stuff on the ground like assholes.

Your point is exactly what I came here to say. Sri Lanka, while still being brownoids, is still cleaner, safer, and more advanced than all of India, though your average poor person will still try to scam you. Though working against Sri Lanka is the fact that they fought a 30 year civil war against jungle Hindus that drained them of lives and resources, and anything they tried to build up until the war ended got blown up by jungle Hindus.
