Plenty of animals live in colder climates than humans evolved in. Also balls aren't that exposed, they're between the two biggest muscles in your body and it's not like humans regularly run through a gauntlet of five year olds with foam bats who find nut shots hilarious. There's not really that many dangers to getting your nuts hurt as seen by the fact that human males are rarely sterilized due to injury.
