it's all so tiresome
it's all so tiresome

>lineart looks like shit
>look at other people's work
>notice they draw on smaller canvases and in turn smaller proportions
>simulate that by zooming my canvas out
>try lineart on the zoomed out version
>instant improvement
Why the fuck did it take me this long to realise? I always knew something was off, because in real life you can zoom the canvas in and out by simply moving your head (even though the stroke sizes don't change). Is this why drawing on a digital canvas feels so fucking weird?

A lot of those beginner videos on youtube that are like "5 tips for every beginner artist" say not to zoom in.
That's good though, these little breakthroughs give you a lot of motivation on your art journey

When I zoom out and try to draw, the lines are thin and blurry, and they're way more wobbly.

>lineart looks like shit
>decide one day to watch some videos of other people drawing digitally
>notice they use really high stabilization
>do a quick google search, find out most people use at least some amount of stabilization
>dig deeper, find out that there are tiny input errors and stutters that stabilization is supposed to correct for
>meanwhile I turned it to 0 from day 1 thinking it'd feel more like trad drawing
>but trad drawing technically has built-in stabilization because of the friction of the paper
>try putting stabilization on the lowest possible setting just to try it out

zoming in =/ working on a smaller canvas. You need to use your shoulder and elbow to do proper lineart, that's why professional drawing tablets are so fucking massive. Working on a smaller canvas just allows you to make more mistakes because there are less pixels, but if you just zoom in you'll only chicken scratch your entire drawing and do 10 times the work because you had to draw every line "bigger"

no. dont use stabilizers. thats not what grit on paper is meant to do, and not everyones using a medium that involves a ton of friction. i guarantee youre hurting yourself if you use stabilizers, if your strokes can be fluid and sharp when necessary you wont be using a stabilizer thatd change up the small nuances in motion. if you cannot keep your hand steady whilst doing linework, youre moving your pen/mouse/finger wrong. use BROAD STROKES with the elbow/shoulder. when you zoom in you tend to get more chickenscratchy with it because you took up all your screen space with an amount of space that a small portion of a stroke should be able to cover. you might not notice the difference now but youll notice later. if you need actual friction and youre using a glass tablet, invest in a different kind of nib and screen protector (theres types out there that emulate the feel of paper if you really prefer that, real friction) but otherwise just rest your hand on the tablet surface and do most of the motion with your shoulder and elbow. your hand will provide the friction and tactile feedback, and youll force yourself to hold your pen properly and use only broad motions rather than scribbling with the fingers/wrist with stabilizers on (if youre skilled with a mouse, this is still all partially if not wholly relevant btw)

it's pretty easy to check the amount of stabilization a particular setup needs: just take a physical ruler and use it to draw a line on top of your tablet
once you get the same behavior as you would on trad, you're good to go

I don't want to watch a YouTube video. Can someone please explain why working on a small canvas is better than just working on a big canvas then shrinking it so nobody can notice all the fuckups?

This is a great image. I will use this to draw two OC's with interesting expression and composition, do you have a source of these two (Youtubers?)
