I've mainly been reading non-fiction lately, I've been re-reading some of Micheal Heiser's work like the Unseen Realm. I spend more time writing though, my hope is to one day complete a pair of trilogies (one fantasy, one sci-fi). OC is one of the main characters as she is ageless and the two series tie into one another even after thousands of years.

Noice. I was trying to get through The Cosmic Liturgy by Balthasar, but after finishing half the book, I got burned out.. it’s a bit dense. I’ll get back to it later, but for now I’m reading The Symbolism of the Christian Temple by Hani, which is blowing my mind. A lot of observations I’ve made regarding symbolism/geometry are suddenly clicking together

I will for sure need to read Cosmic Liturgy at some point. I've read Augustine's Confessions before and so I guess it makes sense to add others like Maximus, Irenaeus, etc to the list. I thought it was sort of a grind but I really enjoyed Eusebius' Church History and highly recommend to anyone curious about early Church history between the end of the New Testament to the time of Constantine.

I haven't delved as much into symbolism/geometry but given my fascination with Heiser's works I could see how I might branch into that inevitably.

With your permission, could I use either one of these pieces as a writing prompt for authors on /lit/?
That board already has a monthly writing contest, but its prompts are always text-based; I’m thinking of making a new one based soley on visuals.
After a few hours of combing through /ic/ for the perfect narrative question mark, I saw each one and went, β€œYeah, this is it!”
If I do follow through on this concept, it will start Friday on /lit/, and I shall link it here.
Whether a β€œYes” or a β€œNo,” thanks for sharing!

slow down, start by examining your sources more carefully - take note of distance between key parts and how far particular lines deviate from 90 degree angles. you should be constantly looking between your work and your source and asking yourself: does mine look like look the same? if so why not? keep adjusting it until you it feels right. no shame in using an eraser.
spend 30 + minutes trying to make a perfect reproduction of something simple. youll learn more and if you post said results youll get less generic feedback

By the way, do you have any interest in being a judge for the entries?
It would basically entail reading a thread full of posts about your art, and then picking your (at minimum) three favoritesβ€”this would start on Friday and end on Monday.
And I guess you’d also have to use a trip a couple times just for validity’s sake in doling out the scores.

Here from /lit/ just to say that this obviously shows technical skill, but the writing competition using this has been handled ineptly.
I can see why /ic/ likes this. Most of the pieces here are simple figure work, with a few placing the figures in a scene. But an effective writing prompt should include some kind of action or hook too. This piece is generic. If it were printed on a book cover, I'd probably ignore it completely. Had the /ic/ link not been posted, I'd take this for a throwaway anime panel.
I apologize for my harshness, but cross-disciplinary work is earned not only by depth in multiple disciplines, but a good sense of how they play off each other. Wagner understood this.
If the /lit/ competition is a self-promo, please either find it in yourself to take the criticism and research what makes an effective prompt, or just don't do this again. I know it can be hard to take this kind of criticism from an anonymous poster; I know this site conditions us to reject this type of advice. I am telling you that the extremely low quality of the work in the competition thread as of right now speaks for itself. It is in part because the prompt has given skilled writers nothing to work with and attracted only self-promoting and/or undisciplined tripfags. Go see for yourself.
Once again, you are obviously technically skilled. I hope that this is a learning experience rather than a one-off.

not that guy but if you dont want /ic/ pics you should tell your tripfags to stop advertising their contest in here he's posted multiple times about it since march. it's not the drawfag https://warosu.org/ic/?task=search&ghost=false&search_text=lit+contest
Anonymous No.7693104 >>7693105

Duly noted.
I'll add that I like the idea of some cross board competition. I don't know how it's received here, but on /lit/ the contest threads are legitimately some of the best places to give and receive feedback.
The issue with this one is that it's sloppily done. The line from the OP and his defenders is that writers should "use their imagination" and that failure to do so is an indication of a lack of skill. If that's the case, might as well give no prompt at all: that will result in freer flights of imagination. Giving such a generic image as a prompt is, imo, worse than nothing as all. Again, it's clearly skillfully rendered, but as a prompt, why use it over any other image in this thread?
Anonymous No.7693105 >>7693109
>>7693104
that's you (as in writers on /lit/) and the OPs problem, he probably only came in this general because nobody replied to his threads other than the first one, probably because very few drawfags on /ic/ are interested. https://warosu.org/ic/?task=search&ghost=false&search_text=icic

if you dont want the tripfag running the contest to just pick random images he wants, you could make a thread on /lit/ to suggest random illustrations from other people and poll like that. it's not like you're making money off of it, so you can literally pick anything
Anonymous No.7693109
>>7693105
Fair. If there isn't interest here, there isn't interest. That stands to reason, since critique is in this board's name, and so I figure you'd have to clamor less for it.

I had nothing to do with choosing the prompt. But regardless, a prompt isn’t supposed to do your job for you. It’s chosen for you to fill in the blank space. If you’re not creative enough to do that, that’s on you. Don’t blame others for your own lack of creativity. I have nothing to learn from someone who refuses to learn themselves.

all of your colours are the same intensity, even the bg- that plus the slightly awkward posing with not so great silhouettes makes everything sort of blend together at a glance.
the composition isn't really giving much to work with either, since it's hard to tell what the focus and overall action/mood of the drawing is meant to be

Alright, so I should structure my palette better, organizing a hierarchy of more saturated colors (Probably for highlights and focal points) and more desaturated ones (less important areas and ones in shadow), so if I wanted the skull to be a better focal point I should've pushed brighter yellows, or somehow made the background work in my favor. Is this similar in concept to the advice about ensuring you have distinct values, only this time applied to color too?
Will attempt to keep an eye out for composition too, the concept still eludes me a little but I'll work on it. Thank you too, anon.
