Working on this right now. I wanted to do the same camera angle and perspective, but not exactly the same pose, so I used csp's feature to detect poses on 3d models and then tweaked it around atop the original pic, then drew atop of it.

Hopefully it'll come out looking good :)

Ok this is embarrassing but I'm going through "drawing on the right side of the brain" and I'm at the part now where it teaches me about negative space and the "basic unit" (first shape you put down) and that the basic unit's proportions determine all other proportions in the drawing. so far so good, but then it says that I should put my pencil on Vincent's chair to compare the relationships, like to compare the width of all 3 negative spaces in the chair back.
and it says that for each proportion I'm supposed to go back to my basic unit to measure it and make the comparison with the other negative spaces in the chair back. and then it says that these relationships are expressed in relationships to "one" or in other words "ratios"

then it says, the negative space just below our basic unit is about 1:7/8, but I can't see it, and I also don't know if the "1:7/8" stands for "width:height" or "basic unit width:other negative space's width" or what. Like is the "one" the space I'm currently looking at, or is it the basic unit, and is it the vertical or horizontal line or the whole thing? I'm utterly confused. It also says the next space below is 1:3/4.

The concept is important and useful, but the treatment in the book is a bit too clinical for me. Unless you're regularly working with an architect's scale, calculating scales precisely is less art and more drafting. Drafting is fun and I do it quite a bit for prop making and woodworking (bitches love my vemco B-) ), but I rarely use my scale as anything more than a straightedge when I'm drawing figures and whatnot. Hell, I use my thumb and index finger for determining the skullheight of a given reference.

most of my cuts are on my thighs but I have some light scarring on my arms, especially upper arms. the character isn't meant to be me, but it's a situation I relate to and I feel like self harm is a good way to express emotional pain and hurt in a concrete way, and the detached expression can be used to convey a sense of dissociation which may not be possible if you're using it to communicate emotion instead

My focus is to draw humans, but I really love how expressive animals can be. They're really fun to draw too. I hope some of that expressiveness can somehow translate to other subjects.

I like the ref you used, very soothing colors and tones. The bright warm and the cold gradient reflection on the right. A very nice piece to look at.
I don't agree with that other anon talking about the "uneven" perspective. When you do a "piece of art" it needs to look "imperfect", somehow flawed, "man made", that's the almost imperceptible touch that makes an image interesting, to look at. Otherwise it would be a "reproduction", and nothing more than that.

I'm very bad with shading as you can see on my original image. I don't know why lol, I just get scared to overshade and it look weird. I get this same thing over and over, "You don't have to be scared of shading", but I still am even after months and months of drawing.

I tried to follow what you did with your edit and it really, really looks a looot better, but I don't think i'd be able to apply this myself without someone else pointing it out for me. Thanks anyway! I'll finally get to work on the background.

i'm intentionally training my power of observation by not using them
you need to use your brain for impartial deep object analysis to see the unseen when your hand is on the empty paper
everything is just lines and curves of different lengths and in relative bearings from neighboring objects and if i get good at that i should be able to draw and then i'll download lighting technology into my brain by doing the same thing with shading
