Spoilers for the uninformed - the murder is a random old ma,n incel, who is living on an island you only get access to in the very last 10 minutes of the game
There is no evidence which points to this character existing- except from one very hard to skill check that says that the angle of the bullet indicates it came from very far away
But not on another island far away
The setting is also nothing impressive - it's steampunk with extra steps - oh look at me we use radios instead of computers and the internet is called something else wooo

I genuinely think people call it the best written game simply because you can call the Chinese guy a yellow skinned slanty eyed fuck

I sat in front of a desktop pc, clicked through a fucking phone conversation, and I cried my eyes out
the game could've failed at literally everything else and it's still more interesting than 99% of the slop that's being made these days
but it didn't fail
I loved the exploration of rpg systems applied to social gameplay
I loved the nods to pulp fantasy and to the history of role playing games
I loved the art
I loved the world building
I loved the characters
I loved how they managed to make it so that failing is still interesting and you're not forced to save scum (not perfectly, but that's a deeper conversation)
I loved how it was yet another rpg with an amnesiac protagonist and didn't matter because it was so well done and so well integrated with the story and the gameplay
if you get to the end and you're disappointed, I don't know what to tell you beyond the old "it's the journey, not the destination"

I think the game just affects you if you are in that part of your life
If i played this game when I was 18, fresh out of a bad breakup, where my friends were growing up and I felt like I was falling behind
Sure I could see it affecting me.
But I've come through the other side, as someone who is happily married, in a comfortable job, with several friends a now with a good connection with family - it just felt vapid, it was very generic woe is me stuff
He's a drunk, he had a bad breakup, he hates his job and everyone around him is depressive
I know I'm in the minority too - this game has raven reviews. But I had zero connection to it - and really I just wanted a cool murder mystery to solve

Instead I got a rambling schizo mess and exploration of depression.
