theres no other way than drawing a lot. copy something, then do it from memory, then combine stuff and change it from memory. its just a lot of learning. sure there is books and courses, but copying what you want to do is most a essential skill. like learning vocabulary.

Hands are a motherfucker to get right. What I did to get somewhat proficient was just fill up several pages of hands in various poses. What I found (for me anyway) is that focusing too much on construction gets in the way of the reality of how hands move in space. Hands are difficult and in practice you will make mangled fingers with impossible anatomy, but its not an unreasonable amount of work to get decent. Just don't be afraid of seeing the failures.

I usually use one 10mg capsule of balanced THC:CBN. You can get capsules in lower doses I think, like 2.5mg, if that's necessary. Alternatively you could look into infused oils for even finer control of the dose.

I don't really take it for anger reasons, just to lower my inhibition so I can get more experimental and loose. Ultimately your long term goal should be to find how to make drawing a fun activity. Doodling without much care for accuracy is a good start.

i didn't know how i wanted this lit when it was just line art. so i just filled the base colors in first and then i figured the energy balls would be the light sources. so i tried to light both characters with both light sources. the faces of the forms facing the lights are the brightest and then the shadows were the farthest away parts or the parts that the light wouldn't reach. but clearly something isn't right. if you can ignore the anatomy issues for now, in particular i'm confused on how to light their faces. maybe im just confused about the planes of the head in dragonball but this is really eluding me. maybe it's because the background? maybe it's because i didn't use rim lighting? the values and the hues both look completely wrong to me but i can't specifically understand why.

i took about 2 years off drawing it shows. it's a lot tougher than i thought to jump back in.

I can copy things somewhat decently, but I still can't into appeal. I think appeal is like talent, some people can produce it almost effortlessly, their five minute doodles have more charm than the pieces I spend hours working on. I'm sure this has been asked this, but is it common to skip traditional drawing for digital? I remember seeing somewhere I should practice fundamentals and all that on pencil first, but I imagine the medium is actually just pure preference?

but none of those really matter if you don't like drawing traditionally, so pick whatever will get you drawing the most

Forehead is too large. No shadow from the brim on his forehead. No cheek shading. Jaw is too recessed relative to the reference. Ears are shorter on the finished drawing than they are on the ref.

Honestly not bad though dude. I don't point these things out to demotivate you, I think you should just try again.

The good news is you could actually fix the jaw, shading and hat without having to redraw everything. People will probably jump down your throat over the eyes too but you can make a convincing Pattinson by just fixing those 3 things.

Ngl, I don't think the idea is good to begin with. By putting AND in the axe, you're giving the less relevant word the most importance/visibility, despite "crime" and "punishment" being in bright red.
Putting "and" in the axe also is also forcing you to flip the letters 90° right, which doesn't look good nor reads well with the rest of the text.

i think you should try identifying what is normal hand movement and what is hypermobile hand movement when studying these too from looking at the one where the thumb is pulled in and do a comparison track to see, may help with the thumb joint issue to try to break it down like that. the rest of the hands look good besides that one and the bent thumbs. i like this brush (I can't draw hands so take this with a grain of salt)

do more observation drawing for a while, you'll get the flow of it. try not to gradient render for now, and remember contrast is really important in rendering (insisting on this because its where I fucked up my most recent painting attempts) look for references with dramatic light and squint to see how they're broken down, it helps analyzing so much

You have an extreme tilt problem, it's visible even from the thumbnail. The easiest fix is flipping your canvas frequently.
Your coloring and lines are also very sloppy, just cleaning them up will make the drawing look better.

Cute but the background needs more work. You laid down the base shading to indicate she's laying on a soft surface but there's not enough depth in it to sell that she's sinking into it. The hair and straps of her shirt also aren't quite interacting with the surface correctly. They make it look like she's floating over it. If you're going for realism, your art should apparently look 3D/form-ish even in just the sketch phase apparently. My shit always looks kinda flat/way off. Is it because of my lack of line weight? I don't have anything to show currently but is that how it's done without shading/rendering?

I've seen people make realistic looking lineart/sketches by construction, but when I do the same it always looks off. It doesn't help for me that when constructing the face, idk wtf to do next especially wanting to draw comics. All the lines/planes constructing the face and then it's like "what next".

here, i did this raven again i referenced yesterday for my warmup, but now from memory and rather quickly. the form came out pretty cool. you can either follow the course youve been doing, because it seems to be effective for you, or just wing it a little, have fun (hehehe, "wing" it). look up what you want to draw, copy it, then do it from memory right after and the day after and so on. doing them from imagination requires study of the subjects forms and lenghts etc. and you only get that from copying them. in the end its just requires a lot of work, but it should also be fun, as said earlier

Flip the canvas horizontally. Set a keyboard shortcut so you can do it frequently. It makes it easier to notice when your drawing is slanted to one side unintentionally. Rotating the canvas is also a good idea for the reason you mentioned.
Other than that, drawing from reference like you've posted is good, keep doing that. I really like the boxer, you captured the form of his muscles well.
