not sure if you were going for accuracy. if you were... next time take a good look at the two. really focus up, maybe mirror the screen or turn it upside down so you can see it with fresh eyes. our eyes get better at spotting even small proportional differences over time as long as we practice seeking them out.

this is basically what all accuracy studies boil down to, specific crits aren't too helpful when you're looking exactly at the ground truth beside your paper.

Thanks for the info. I do mostly photo studies. Works quite well. But I should study other artists, too, I guess.

Today the computer was free for a long time, so I spent about 2h in total pure drawing time on 1 min gestures. Ended up with 50 because I redrew several to understand them deeper - the first attempts at them ended up bad. I also ended up spending a bit more than a minute on most of them - I found I lack about 10 seconds to complete most. + I use the windows clock app to manually set timers, so that and scrolling through images takes up some time. 2h is the result.

I feel like I am starting to understand what Vilppu is talking about. I wouldn't say I'm definitely "feeling the form" but there's a vocabulary of lines that help quickly mark the main points of a figure. I even have time to think about accuracy for a bit now! On that note, I need to level it up. I've spent some time copying stuff in the past, so I've got a bit of basic skill in that, but more is always good.

I remember the other anon said I have no excuse to draw as little as I do because gestures can be done in trad. That is true, but my references are on the computer, also the PC table is the only free sufficiently large surface where I can draw. Also I can only really seriously concentrate when I'm using it.

Ah well, more excuses, I can just take a board to place a sheet of paper on and send the images to my phone. No limits for one who wants to learn. I will remember this next time.

I have also found I am extremely inefficient about my drawing time. In about 5h I was using the computer and tablet for, only about 2h were pure drawing time, as I said. The rest were spent on useless, recursive thoughts and walking around the apartment doing random stuff and chatting with relatives. This has always been my bane, I will try to make more of a conscious effort to remove these thoughts from my mind. (Note from the end of the post: I have also spent about 50 minutes typing this up and re-reading this for coherency and mistakes... seriously, what the fuck am I doing with my time?)

Anon also said to check out Hampton's gesture. I watched a 17 min youtube video where he gives a free rundown of the method, and I think it is more esoteric than what Vilppu is teaching lol. I remember him mentioning horizontal line being boring, vertical being stiff, so he uses diagonals??? What?? The method itself has clearly defined steps, but it requires one to understand the muscles the lines are based on. Also he spent like 3 mins explaining feet wtf? All in all, I am not impressed, but I downloaded his Gesture Course and I'm going to watch it (maybe not in full, but nonetheless) to understand this subject deeper, this youtube video was probably an incomplete overview.

I also promised I would start drawing a cyberpunk scene, but I got sucked into the gesture grind, so I will do it next time. Maybe tomorrow morning?

I feel like I've levelled up my gesture enough to understand the next chapter of Vilppu's book. I will read it next and watch the video. Not to say I won't continue drawing gesture - there's still a lot to learn, I just think it's time to make the next step.

I do this specifically for travel but instead my tools are ball point, fineliner, brushpen. It really helped proportions, (it isn't perfect though). I draw on my commute to work and on my lunch break then try to get at least an hour at home on work days. If you can pair drawing with another habit in a different location (like me being on a train or in a breakroom) it'll make it easier to draw. if you're brave enough you can set an hour everyday where you either draw or do nothing.

First timer here, I vaguely understand that sketching is the part that shows what you are lacking, but does sketching have a limit on time or adjustment?
For picrel I did basic construction and then about 8 hours drawing the lines and filling in details, undoing if the stroke was bad.
My thinking was that I was practicing properly by drawing each line correctly (to my knowledge), but would I actually benefit more by powering through within a time limit? Or maybe I should treat it like ink on paper where I can't correct by erasing?
Anything I try to do in a short amount of time is a mess, by the way. Even gesture drawing will take me forever because the line I see and the line I draw are drastically different and I don't know how to build off of something that's incorrect.

Barely tried faces and it was a pain having the elements align to where it matched the ref. Couldn't get how to draw lips either so that took 15 minutes, an hour total. The round watercolor brush was fun to use.

Stop using a opacity brush for everything. I can see you struggle and schizoing to keep the tones uniform and it is making your work look messy and dirty.
Once you get the lines down pick a size brush like basic-size and then pick 3 tones to shade it.
Look at your ref drawing. It only has black, white and two greys while your shading is a mess because you are using a brush that has opacity tied to pressure and you arent being consistent with it.
It is a very shitty redline but your lines are already good enough in their position, just try to draw over them with a inking brush that has a set opacity and then stick to 3 tones instead of trying to shade with a opacity brush. Not even tradfags shade like this (maybe airbrushers)

You're not pushing your values dark enough. Making a guess here, you started by filling in her skin color with the palest shade, then painted the shadows on top? Try using a mid tone as the base and then painting both the shadows and highlights over it instead.

I think if you want to make sexual art you should explore other forms of stylization. The very cartoon-y almost tumblr-esq faces with the long gangly bodies with very saturated colors gives whiplash (+ I think doing some studies of side profiles could help you a lot)

Anywho I regret making these sketches, I regret committing myself to lining & correcting it, but I will persevere (I HATE the sketch lines.)

I don't know how to feel about my recent studies, I can't tell if I am getting better or worse since it's just the same fine art-esque slop for weeks, I don't even draw as much anymore. I feel stuck in a rut where I feel miserable regardless whether I draw or not.

Actually, I usually don't copy or rely on references. I just remember art on Instagram, and whenever something sticks in my memory, I try to incorporate it into my work. I never really did any formal study, just focused on drawing. Recently, though, I've started doing gesture drawings and watching Proko’s anatomy videos. My goal has always been to reach the skill level of a mangaka and develop a unique, personal style.

those guys are just too vague. i do get the "i wanna be unique" angle, but art is already hard enough when you know exactly where you need to get, stagnation is basically guaranteed. just look for mangaka you really like and try to do it like them. maybe focus on a couple but if you find that difficult you can cast a wide net. as i said there's a big risk of stagnation if one does stuff the same way most of the time.

as a person who developed my own unique style and didn't emulate anyone, it really does take significantly longer to see progress with it. Read the sticky its in there. Art fundamentals. There are several books and video courses etc.
I sadly have to admit I didn't do much fundies besides half of vilppu's video course, a perspective book (forgot which) and some jap how to make manga books.
Fundies will help. The other advice is always use references (until you can draw confidently without it) and try to critique your own work. (Overlay on the reference and check for mistakes).
