What’s your experience been with making art friends online? Most of the artists I know don’t really have anyone to talk to, and it’s been years since they had a real friend group

I met some artists irl, but none of them became big friendships or even small friendship.
One artist was a bit of a cool drinking buddy while I was abroad, but we barely talked when I returned.
A few artists I got along with annoyed me with their incessant political posting (Trump derangement, despite being basically on the other side of the globe) which discouraged me from reaching out again. I'm mostly online on WhatsApp, so I don't really check on those who gave me their instagram or X.

Talking with artists feels very cautious on both sides. Speaking to strangers withing my day job field is much more chill.

every time I tried to join a discord server everyone was deepthroating the local porn artist who drew with a cancer inducing art style and had the typical obnoxious personality that made you wanna fucking strangle him with razorwire but also had 300 gorillion followers and earned 15 trillion dollars a month on Patreon because he drew the futa dicks really big or something, so of course he's the funniest guy ever XD

I like the idea of having art friends, but once I added some anons from here I felt like it became kinda like a chore trying to connect with them and telling them how great their art is and what im currently drawing and yada yada
I dunno, maybe im just too weird and socially retarded even by 4chan standards
Anonymous No.7770053 [Report]
>>7770017 (OP)
The only people online I talk about my art with are a bunch of (presumably) dudes I am aquitanced with trough 4chan, most of whom were from back in the day when /tg/ still used to run quests and I participated in a bunch of them usually by drawfagging in them. I even ran a couple of shit tier quests as well.

Social media or dedicated art sites have been utterly useless for me to get in touch with people with interest in the type of shit I draw, though on deviantart I have a bunch of people who do comment regularly on the stuff I upload but besides that I don't really interact with them.
Anonymous No.7770056 [Report]
some level of narcisism is probably necessary to become an artist
I'd rather make friends with people with different interests
Anonymous No.7770069 [Report]
i find my art is good enough now that it's kind of easy to reach out to artists that follow me on twitter. I just draw a decent piece of one of their characters and that most of the time opens the door for conversation, but I don't know how to carry a discussion once I'm in. I'm also always afraid I'm going to say something off key that'll scare them off

my experience with trying to join SFW only discords out of despair to avoid porn is that they only exist for the mods, who are always transgender for some reason, to gather 13 year olds which they then flip onto their actual porn server they've linked everywhere with a warning that it's totally NSFW and you shouldn't look at it if you're underage
I do not believe you should link your porn server at all if you want to keep the space SFW especially when you do so because your idea is that it needs to be kid friendly
they literally just exist as a proxy to funnel kids on a porn server. discord culture is fucking vile and adults should never be allowed to mingle with kids in leisure spaces
I have never seen a server that was about not having porn on it rather than grooming kids, maybe they only exist in retarded Christian communities

joined a server from an old art section of a dead forum, the group fell apart due to gay ass commie larping faggots and then the glue of the group died

next group was a bit better from online drawing games but fell apart due to relationship drama + everyone got busy with irl work so we couldn't hang out and draw together like we used to.

Still miss those guys

art/reading/writing is fundamentally a very lonely passtime so I cherish those days

Spent years building a community and filtered all of the shit starters, weirdos, and vibe killers out of. Now I have real friends that do daily art VCs with. The most important thing is to never, ever let these mentally ill and/or fairweather faggots incapable of creating thriving, active communities convince you that they should have say so on anything important, nor let them implant large numbers of people who don't fit the culture into your community. Those chuds are lying to you. I'm the admin of a large Discord server and we welcome people of all ages from 12 year olds to 47 year old (like me!) and we all love to draw our fursonas together. Of course someone gets frisky sometimes but we can't allow that on our SFW only server for children so we make sure to those naughty bois to our NSFW server where we have all sorts of rooms for ERP and fetishes ;) of course we can't avoid that sometimes one of our underage members joins the NSFW server and in that case we can only make sure that he discovers his sexuality and his true gender. We have courses to draw animal penises correctly when we do ERP gangbangs with our fursonas all together. We have several kids in our NSFW server who discovered they were born in the wrong body this way. It's such a triumph when we get yet another one to do bottom surgery. It doesn't matter how many commit suicide as long as we get that choppy choppy action going on! I'm trans btw.

If anything the only NSFW servers I've been are very selective about who they invite in (it's a system of recommandations from members and the mods will check your social to see if your interests/personality align with the server) and ban any user who lied about their age or whatever if they hear/find about something. Not saying groomers don't exist on discord or elsewhere but anon is just being loud and want to talk about trannies.

About 10 years ago I livestreamed with a couple of crimson daggers people, they were cool, but I didn't know that relationships take work or that boundaries was a thing. My best art friend and I trolled one of my other friends by saying how cool hitler was and he left the discord and blocked my friend it was so funny. The best art friend asked if I contacted him to tell him we were kidding around, but I didn't care enough to do so. I had an art peer who is a girl and she deleted all her media and kept in contact with me, but I was always jokingly flirting with her (she had a bf and we all knew) and she blocked me as well. After that I couldn't get art friends online or irl to stick. I even went to one of those art meetups with Ahmed Aldoori and Steven Zapata and didn't even network, both of them was stressing how important it was to keep in contact with each other.

Just read that part, I had friends throughout the years (Most of that changed after 2020, had work friends in 2024 but ended up fucking 2 co-workers and had to get out of there so I'm alone again) A girlfriend, etc. Ultimately I learned that I had a hard time knowing how to clarify and prioritize if anything. The break from art did teach me that while my art skills were completly rusty my more mature mind understood concepts like planes, composition and value hierarchy easier than before.

Pretty sure being about the same level of skill and not insecure about your art is probably an actual requirement for that to work. Otherwise it's like any other relationship and it's a matter of chemistry and effort. I fail at the later. Talking to people online or on the phone is a chord for me, especially in a different language. No matter the subject it's just not the same organic social experience than meeting irl. My past experience in fandom/communities wasn't too stellar either. If you're above average, people either walk on eggshells around you or you do because some people treat you differently, no matters the intents. It's better than cold indifference but it's not fun and not great for bonding with people either.

No, it's dog eat dog. I've seen friendships get harmed when one of them socially engineers the other to make financial decisions that ended up at a loss worth hundreds of thousands of dollars just so they can mock and ridicule the other to look superior in front of other big wigs with lots of money. It's quite depressing to see this behavior, we all joke about being crabs in a bucket well this place pales in comparison to what richfags do to their so called friends.

Think twice before you befriend someone online there are some sick puppies out there who genuinely gratify and take glee by ruining you and this space is no different.

Concept art space marine in void does so well because the hordes of retards with third grade literacy levels can't understand anything more nuanced than big robot gun man. The closest you're allowed to get is 'aesthetically artsy' like backrooms and -core shit, but it's really not much better.

i make electronic music alongside art online and pretty much every internet friends i made are on the electronic music sphere, the select few who are artists just happens to be doing the same things that i do (doing art and music at the same time)

making friends in the electronic music community feels easier since it's a small niche corner of the internet where everyone knew each other and try to grow together compared to the general art sphere that feels like a big busy city thats intimidating to traverse through

i hang around communities with srs artists trying to make it in the industry, they're usually pretty nice and the quality is higher. ive found they are less likely to be rude because these are essentially your future co-workers but sometimes i see clear passive aggressiveness come through
i don't hang out /w other artists as much but they vary more, more honest about things, more doomerpilled, just a lot more temperamental overall. these types you find coming from youtuber artist discords

For art, I feel that if you try to befriend someone who's more or less skilled than you, it inevitably turns into a mentor/student dynamic... It takes two people confident in their skill to make it happen imo. And it's very easy to get ahead or fall behind.
For that reason, I have no trouble making friends online, but I never really made art friends. Simply never got to connect with art-minded people in the same skill range and with similar interests.

it's just the colloquial umbrella term that dubstep falls into, something like neurofunk dnb, halftime, complextro and stuff like that

examples i can find:
Culprate - Dawn (neurofunk)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTFd0AkS05k

KOAN Sound - Forgotten Myths (neurofunk)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX8sdiVSkpc

Amon Tobin - Cruel Like Flint (COPYCATT Bootleg) (halftime)
https://soundcloud.com/itscopycatt/cruel-like-flint-bootleg

Vorso - Wannabe (halftime)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=necFszuebHI

Emplexx - Still You (complextro)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZaQZEw6NVU

i recommend you try giving dubstep a chance again! the newer stuff sounds nothing like the skrillex brostep era back in the day, and even if you end up not vibing with it either you can see really how far the genre has come since
