For hair you wanna designate and consciously partition the different sections. In this case I decided blue is the top/back basically just a extension of the skull note the small partition ridge on the top of her head this is where your strands of hair origin from. Green are the bangs they all lead to that little hair ridge i mentioned previously. Purple is the ponytail. You'll have a much easier time doing lineart for your hair if its general shape is blocked in.

The reason the markers are there (for some) is to also allow for facial diversity, if you're that type of artist. Some proportions appeal more than others. My method isn't Loomis, but it works for me.

Don't listen to the crabs. If you are following a proko course they should've shown you their gesture method right? There is also no right or wrong way to do a gesture. You could start with a simple stick figure, maybe add a ribcage and a pelvis. Something like this.

I do it like this because I can't copy any other way, I put down a rough shape of it and then work over that, usually with constrution to learn how to do that, but it comes out wrong every time. Wrong in small ways but small is massive in terms of copying because it changes everything. And I can't help but see them. But I can't fix them. Gesture is a tricky subject because, depending on who you ask, you’ll get a different answer. For me personally, gesture is an advanced topic the exercise is the culmination of your knowledge in different areas. Walt Stanchfield’s Gesture Drawing for Animators is the only satisfactory explanation I’ve encountered.

I think getting comfortable with drawing a super-simplified version of the whole body first would be beneficial and would let you explore gesture more effectively

Getting good at observing and drawing accurately is crucial, so measuring with the pencil is good when you're first learning. In some situations it isn't very practical, so you just measure with your eye. This is a bit hard for beginners. After a lot of practice you need to measure with your pencil less often and you can just measure with your eye. When something goes wrong, you can correct mistakes by measuring with your pencil. It's a useful tool to have in your toolbox. There lots of way to measure though. Comparative measurement is the most useful, but is hard to learn until you are decent at drawing accurately.

Once you think you are decently accurate, try copying one or two Bargue plates (or a cast from life) as accurately as you can, you'll learn how to see much more accurately. There's so much a beginner can't even see. Some ateliers make their students spend 80-100 hours on a single copy. It's kind of 'over-training', doing lots of complex algebra will make basic multiplication a breeze. Once you train the skill, it kind of runs in the background so you don't have to worry too much about it anymore for your actual drawings, unless something goes wrong. But then you have to tools to fix it.
