Why do people here seem so hostile to the idea of wanting to make money/a living from art these days? I remember when a shitton of people were aspiring to become professional concept artists

Because its true? Only people from third world countries where twenty USD is equivalent to like 40,000 million pesos/whatever thirdie currency they have can make an actual living from art commissions. The rest of us in first world countries are getting slowly raped and buttfucked by ai shit
Anonymous No.7783037 [Report] >>7783041 >>7783044
the hostility is mostly towards trying to make money without skill
it feels like trying to scam instead of improving at a craft

they found out being a pro concept artist was just photobashing pintrest (the actual job, not promo images)

Is this why anons here bitch nonstop about artists like Scott Malin making 10k a month?

That’s the funny part, you don’t need to be skilled at all though. Just some fags here get assblasted some /beg/ or someone worse than them are actually making large sums of money with their art and not them.

of course, the same way you can make money without drawing at all just by pumping slop
but expect hostility in a board that is (supposedly) all about the craft
Anonymous No.7783052 [Report] >>7783384
Ai shills trying to demoralize you because they believe everyone will pay for Ai slop once you have given up. Concept art has always been a pipe dream meme to sell you courses tho.

Nothing wrong with it, although I strongly feel that a lot of anons have become disillusioned with the current shameless trend-hopping + >nudes in patreon hehe :) formula.

Anon, i know you can’t handle people less skill than you are making a lot of money and use “le porn” excuse, but come on…

I have no problem with those creators (nor the other nsfw guy above, or the gazillion grifters on youtube), as they aren't coming to an art critique board to make pointless money / social media threads
I don't care about them, I'm not their target audience, that's fine
what I hate is anons that think those successes are their way out of learning a craft, when the whole purpose of the board is to improve at said craft
Anonymous No.7783083 [Report]
>>7783054
The porn trend hopping still works it has low effort to mid-high(rare)reward though it got nerfed cause IA, but that’s just with static images. Animations are still the best route regardless. That’s just the easiest route, the other route is just making cute original animations, making funny animations, or just be a poorly drawn stick figure channel that covers history topics/relatable art channels.

>those successes are their way out of learning a craft, when the whole purpose of the board is to improve at said craft

But the whole purpose for this board originally was to be skilled enough to join the concept art industry, things changed now so has skill level requirements too.
Anonymous No.7783106 [Report]
>>7783088
sure, but then we'd need to drop the skill to zero (since there's no barrier to yt or social media) and the whole point of this board becomes moot
instead of doing that, we just keep the same standards and retarded grifters can fuck off elsewhere

That’s not true at all though?
Half the posts here are about commissions, how to increase social media engagement, etc.
Maybe some people are sour about AI now but that’s about it.

Crabs and AI jeets are jealous of popular, rich artists just like most non artists that hate rich, smart and beautiful people, I guess it's human nature to be a jealous bitch.
Ignore em and go make some money!

Hostile? I see it as more of a meme. Making money is a hustle. No matter if you are selling art or manure.

Anonymous No.7783312 [Report]

because of crapbucket mentality and because montizing a concept directly rather than making your art dependent on another aspect (or vice verse) invites in mass production incentives.

For example ainiggers became the unoticed rectal cancer they are because people were charging money upfront for short term success invites people who like their stuff like pinups to use ai models to emulate the style and stuff. If you embedded your art into a story like a comic, animation, or a multimedia collabrative project you would be mostly immune to techbros.

The most notable or sucessful artists started off with a yearn to make something beautiful or people who did it simply for the lulz, and they ended up profiting off of it extensively.

I do have to be skilled. I have to be absolutely perfect or else I get blamed for everything wrong in my life. Other people can do whatever they want but I have to follow the rules and be twice as good as everyone else for my wins to even count.

because you come off as a cringe grifter trying to swindle people out of money, and don't actually care about the craft. you spend all this time learning a skill that's meant to convey personal expression, just to be consumed by capitalism. it's so fucking disappointing and lame. if money is all you want, then you go make money doing things infinitely easier.

>HOW DO I MAKE MONEY GAISE?
>PLS GUYS HOW DO I DRAW ANIME SO THAT I CAN MAKE MONEY?
>GAISE HOW DO I GET FOLLOWERS SO I CAN MAKE MONEY?
>SO HOW DO I MAKE MONEY WITH ART? AND NO I DONT CARE ABOUT LEARNING TO DRAW JUST TELL ME HOW TO GET RICH AND FAMOUS QUICK IN ONE FELL SWOOP WITHOUT ME ACTUALLY DRAWING
>SO ANYWAY GUYS THIS ART IS GOOD BECAUSE THE ARTIST MAKES MONEY ON PATREON
>WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS ART IS NOT GOOD? THIS ARTIST MAKES A LOT OF MONEY! UR JUST JEALOUS!
>OMG TALKING ABOUT THE TECHNICALITIES OF ART IS SOOOO BORING STOP DOING THAT AND GO DRAW! ALSO LETS DISCUSS WAY TO MONETIZE ART AND GET EPIC FOLLOWERS ON X FOR THE 6 MILLIONTH TIME
>WOW ANON YOUR WORK IS GREAT PLS FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER SO I CAN MAKE NUMBERS AND THEN MAKE MORE MONEY
>GOOOOOD I LOVE MONEY SO MUCH I WILL DRAW FOTM ANIME TREND GACHA CHARACTERS EVERYONE SHOULD DO THAT OR THEY HATE ART
>WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DONT CARE ABOUT MAKING EPIC SUPER AWESOME TWITTER FOLLOWERS AND MONEY?!?!?! BEG U SUCK UR JEALOUS THIS MAKES ME INSECURE ABOUT MY OWN CHOICES!!!
>YOUR WORK SUCKS BECAUSE YOU DONT MAKE FOLLOWERS AND BIG EPIC MONEY AND THIS OTHER HAS MORE NUMBERS THAT THIS OTHER GUY LOL SO THAT MEANS BIGGER NUMBER=BETTER
it's not that anons are hostile towards the prospect of monetizing your work, it's just that it's the only thing you faggots care about and relentlessly push at the cost of everything else

Just imagine every time you say that dumping radioactive waste into the ocean is a bad thing, some underage mexican retard comes running telling you the nuclear lobby earns more than you so they can do no wrong.

Just because you make something for money doesn't mean you can't add personal expression to it, even goddamn Loomis mentions that in one of his books.
Art is a trade and like other trades, one would expect to make money from it if they're good enough and or people like their work. Of course one should enjoy the trade/craft they decide to do, but trying to inscribe some higher calling to art and saying it shouldn't be done for the main reason it has been done and and taught for throughout the centuries is pretty lame.
Anonymous No.7783511 [Report]
>>7783485
Yeah, sure. Obviously there's a difference between someone like Bryan Lee O'Malley making a series of graphic novels to express his creativity, and the typical patreon street social media artists drawing the latest trends they have no interest in. The lamest part isn't that they're making money, it's how they have the technical ability to express their vision onto a canvas, but instead of making art that speaks to them and expresses who they are, they buckle down to capitalism and make the most forgettable, uninspired consumable trash that everyone else is doing. It makes me wonder how many of those people who talk nonstop about making money, follower counts, and comms actually care about art? I would bet money that 90% of these annoying snake oil salesmen wouldn't care about art, period, if they could make money off of it, and just jump on another grift they think they could make easy money out of.

Creation is all about motivation. what are you motivated by? if its money, it will show in your work, no matter what you make. ironically picrel is a good example of an artist motivated by money: pandering with vapid coomerbait character designs.

There will always be grifters in the arts, so long as they are allowed to profit from it. A creator who doesnt take money for his work effectively removes any chance to be accused of being money motivated. To some mouth breathers that will translate as: that art is "better" because of it.
Critically, not always. but in the spirit of art and creation, yes, it always is.

Being born in a third world country feels like a punishment for something horrible I did in my past life. On top of that if you're mentally ill it's even worse, people would rather have you locked in a cell and rot there than talk to you

Faith is lost that it is possible or even desirable. What would your workflow look like? Imagine anyone on the planet wanting to pay you a livable wage, money THEY ALREADY HAVE and give to you presumably to make more money off of your work. It’s a big heavily regulated pain in the ass to have employees. What type of shit do you think new hires without connections are doing all day to generate value that’s worth the headache and cost? It isn’t sketching, I’ll tell you that much.

I don't see this being a trend on ic. There's people that prefer art as a hobby, and those that are trying to make it their job.
