I'm trying to do a master study on Methonium or Synedoche, but I'm struggling with figure drawing because I was never trained. Would it be a good idea to get a brief introduction to figure drawing first, or should I just learn from the artist by breaking down their work and applying it to my own? Thanks

I mean you're going to get a much better understanding of what the artist is actually doing if you learn the same fundamentals they did, or something similar, rather then just purely copying. figure drawing also isn't all that hard to learn, there are courses online that'll teach you the basics, you'll just need to practice a lot.

I definitely think getting a basic understanding of figure drawing is a good idea. You can even use some of synecdoche's sketches to help you out. Good tastes btw

Studying an artist is mostly to learn about their style and maybe personal process.
The foundations of figure drawing are a bit more neutral and universal, so go learn that elsewhere, and do master studies only to try and adapt that to the artist's style.
