Franks were a Germanic folk whose Old Frankish tongue was mutually intelligible with Old English, and whose sole linguistic heir today is Dutch.

Moreover, even when looking at the so-called '''French''' language, two-thirds of all Francophone texts from prior to 1200 AD come from England. I'm not sure whether the French want to be a subjugated race who adopted the language of one conqueror and the name of a second, or to be the conquerors who forewent their noble Germanic dialect for the Vulgar Latin of their new Gallic subjects, but they really ought to think before they speak.

Many Latin words entered the English language directly from Latin in the Renaissance. Of course it was made possible by the entrance of French into the English language centuries before, but it's not like the French can claim responsibility for the formation of the English language, as it was a matter of English speakers absorbing French and not French speakers being interested in learning English.

I don't understand when foreigners say the French language isn't actually French because it comes from Latin. Who does it belong then? And how long do we need to speak it for it to be ours? How much do we have to transform it to make it ours?
You start with the idea that the French precede the Latin language, but the very beginnings of our identity and history starts with the Latin language. Our history starts in the early middle ages.
What does it matter that the peoples we come from had adopted the Latin language? Why do foreigners imagine us to be those ancient peoples despite having nothing in common with them? Is identity solely determined by one's blood? Then why stop at the Celts? Why not go further back in time to nameless ancestors and claim that Frenchmen are actually those guys and everything that came after isn't actually theirs?

Wanna know how English was formed?
Then go back in 1100, Aelfric of Chippington, Anglo-Saxon serf, goes see his master Pierre de Coventre. "There is a flooding downtown!" (Pierre de Conventre does not understand) *Smashes his face* "Uhh ... sorry my lord, there was an inundation in the village". Hence why in English you have twice as many nouns as in other languages, one French (the master's) and one Germanic (the serf's).

Isn't it crazy how English got so much French influence? It was the Normans who spread French in England, but they were Germanic folks from Scandinavia lol.

These Germanic people dropped their own language, switched to French, then invaded another Germanic country to spread French again lol Then they got absorbed and disappeared lol, so damn funny lol.

Probably the idea of "nation"s in Europe is just an illusion. so it came about because people got so mixed up they couldn't even tell who belonged where anymore

Seeing your reaction just proves how blurry the whole idea of ethnicity is in Europe. Normans were originally Germanic Vikings from Scandinavia, but they moved to Normandy, started speaking French, and basically turned into full-on Frenchmen.

Yet the French just call them part of the French cultural sphere and act like the Viking origin is bullshit. That right there shows how meaningless all these "nation" and "ethnicity" labels are in Europe. Germanic Vikings and Frenchmen at the same time? lol

And yeah, that's probably how the Romans who ruled the Mediterranean for centuries just disappeared too. When look at European history like this, it's really complicated but also pretty fascinating

>Yet the French just call them part of the French cultural sphere and act like the Viking origin is bullshit.
I didn't say that. The origins of Normandy come from viking migrants from Denmark.
I'm saying there's a sea of difference between what we call the "Normans" of 911 and the "Normans" of 1066. They basically have nothing in common besides a name. Yet despite all your talk about shifting identities and the awkwardness of categorization you fail to grasp this concept.

>Normans were originally Germanic Vikings from Scandinavia
The Normans are the inhabitants of Normandy, i.e. Northern French people with a little bit of Scandinavian admixture.
William the Conqueror burned down England and rewarded his men: as many Picards and Bretons as Normans, with baronnies and counties all over his new kingdom. Even some dude from as far as Champagne was made a baron in some lost place of Northern England. The rest is English wishful thinking to distance themselves from the French.

Well... since the Normans settled in France and switched to speaking French, it's possible that local French people living in Normandy also joined them in conquering England. Either way, I think the Normans and Romans show well what the concept of ethnicity in Europe is all about.

In East Asia, the Manchus conquered China, wiped out Han culture, and forced their customs and hairstyles, but eventually, the Manchus themselves were absorbed by the Chinese and lost their language. When such mixing happens repeatedly, identities are completely lost, and the owners of the language and culture become meaningless. This is probably the closest example to the European ethnicity.

Europeans mixed so much that it became impossible to clearly separate groups, so the concept of ethnicity or nation emerged as a way to make those distinctions. That's why I find European history so fascinating. It's not about boring political battles, but about various peoples coming together and having gangbang sex. How could it be boring?

Henry of Huntingdon (a Norman born in England in 1080 AD) wrote an epic poem in which he describes the Englishmen and Normans of England defeating Louis VI of France at BrΓ©mule in 1119 AD, when the latter's forces attempted to wrest control of the Duchy from the King of England

>Here Noyon's towers rise o'er the plain,
>And Oise flows onward to the Seine,
>Two banner'd hosts in ranks advance :
>Here, Lewis leads the pow'rs of France ;
>Henry of England, there, commands
>His English and his Norman bands.
>See his arm the foremost crush.
>The island spearmen onward rush ;
>While the bold chivalry of France
>Recoils before the Norman lance ;
>And muttered oaths reveal their shame.
>As they curse the conqueror's name.
>So distant ages long shall tell
>Of gallant Henry, first to quell
>On his own soil the Frenclunan's pride,
>Where Noyon's field with blood was dyed ;
>And conq'ring England's mighty son
>The spoils and laurell'd trophies won.

It's a good example of the distinctions made between ethnic groups, geographical territories and realms

My point is simple

Europe's ethnic groups have mixed so much that the idea of clear-cut "ethnicity" feels kinda pointless. The Normans are a perfect example, they were Vikings and French at the same time. This is what European ethnicity is all about.

In my opinion, Latin didn't just disappear like magic overnight. it evolved into the now Romance languages as regional dialects developed and shifted. at that same time the Romans themselves mixed in with locals so much that cultural and ethnic lines got all blurry.

Absolutely groundbreaking

>The Normans are a perfect example, they were Vikings and French at the same time.
But they were not. There were vikings that were called "Normans" by the French, and later there were Frenchmen that were called "Normans". The two groups while obviously historically related are in effect clearly distinct.

Your point isn't wrong. But again, I just think Europe's peoples are so mixed that these distinctions lose much of their meaning, they were Vikings, then French, and later even English. That's what European peoples are: all connected and blended together.

Since Latin disappeared, who could possibly claim to be its "true successor"? Even linguists can't say, why? Because each language evolved in its own way. That's what European peoples are. identities are blurry, and No one can truly claim ownership over an ancient language or culture.

First, there were the Northmen also called Vikings
Then, they settled in a part of Neustria, inhabited by Gallo-Franks, and called this part Normandy
Then, they became less than 5% of the Normandy population, population who was called Normans no matter the ethnicity (the same way Bretons and Provençaux and Gascons are just called French)
Then, 100 years latter, most Normans were still Gallo-Franks and some of them were Gallo-Frankish-Northmen (these mixed Normans were like 1/4 Northmen)
Then, William conquered England with Normans with the help of Gallo-Franks from other regions
Finally, people keep calling them Normans even if they were from Flanders or Brittany or Gascony
Do you understand now?
