and as for Russian Empire era, many Poles studied in Petersburg too but it was more poisonous apparently, I read in old diaries and books that Poles in Poland complained about Petersburg unis as being "craddles of socialism" and many Poles returned from there with heads filled with revolutionary ideas, which local conservatives didn't like obviously. I think more Jews preferred to study there. Poles (who had to studied in Russian Empire) usually chose Tartu (for humanities) and Riga (for STEM), German-run unis were more conservative spiritually and simply gave you access to the whole world of the German science that was the best in the world around that time.
