Yeah yeah, danmaku is the heart of Touhou and there are the fighting games, but I'd like for him to try something different and not outsource other gametypes.
I still like the music cds he releases, I think slowing down with something else could be fine.

I'd pretty much kill for a Yumimi Mix/Dinosaur Island style game made by ZUN in his typical style with older Touhou characters or if he went back to drawing manga himself. He used to draw Touhou 4komas back in the beginning, why not go back to that? Releasing a few comics here and there instead of just ANOTHER BULLETSHOOTER would be fantastic. He did it in the past so why be so stubborn now? I even heard rumors that he used to sell personal drawings of characters really early on.

For me the game seems like the most fun entry since LoLK which was maybe the best game since SA but I don't mean to disrespect DDC either. Wonder Stones were adjusted from annoyances to actual crack, I think the designs are funky but make total sense, and the music at least suits my tastes. Plot is weirdly dark but not in a "grimsokyo" way, it simply makes you feel bad for the fake beings because they are simply artificial. I'd be very happy to see them again outside of the sanctuary. It's kind of hard to believe the same ZUN of recent times made UDoALG.

but like always with 2hus, it's always hard to tell who's going to set in the minds of the jp autist fans. Finalbosshus more often than not get some spotlight in the long run, but I can still see Nareko or Yuiman taking it in the long term too

Her popularity might leak onto Ariya, since those two are a pair. Not anywhere near as blatant as Hisami and Zanmu, but the fanbase loves to latch onto anything.

This is probably the best game since LoLK. It's incredibly schizophrenic, from the gameplay to the story to the music to the atmosphere.
The gimmick was fun, although making the shot types modular made them less individually interesting overall. The attacks were mostly fun, although some were cool-looking but you can't pass them at first sight. Sometimes, the bright lights overwhelm you and you either dodge things you shouldn't have or loose a life seemingly for no reason. The Master Spark looks like Marisa superpissing, ZUN should have made it more bright.
A lot of the new characters were what I'd call semishithus, and even the other ones were pretty weird.
Toyohime was cool to see, I've waited to see her in a game since I first read SSiB. Her portrait looked really nice, it was the best one in the game. She stood out like a sore thumb compared to her overdesigned peers, although those designs weren't that bad, especially compared to the 19hus. Her boss fight surpassed my expectations, it was fun, creative, fairly difficult and her attacks had a similar feel to the other lunarians' danmaku. It was very cute to see her sprite cover her face with the fan when she used a spell.
The final boss fight might be my new favorite, it's pretty much tied with Okuu. Some of her attacks felt like they could even pass for EX attacks. Her design was cool, although a little weird and uncute.
The music was a wild ride. That beings said, even the worst tracks positively compare to the worst tracks from LoLK, though there's more of them. The title screen theme is the best in ages. The stage 4 boss theme is probably my favorite, its main motif could even compete with the best piano pieces in EoSD. Overall, the tracks range from "I'd listen to it in my free time" to "would make a good third track in a future album" to "Zuma deluxe title screen music."
I'd say it was too avant-garde(which was on purpose), and too unpolished. If ZUN had spent more time working on it, it could have been a real all-timer.
I hope the next game will be more toned-down aesthetically. If that's the case, we're so back!

Thoughts on new OST?
This is quite a piano HEAVY soundtrack. Some songs are also quite dissonant, almost creepy, perhaps by design.
Personally, Toyohime and Nina's theme so far is my favorite. Like always though, it'll probably change with time.

Of course, however, you can only do this so much until the dwellers of earth and in fact all others receptive of your 'passive' antagonization begin bearing their fangs at you, and because it begins culminating. The Lunarians can't indefinitely delegate the weight of their own impurity for it only increasingly invites hostility, and no matter how powerful they are, it can't work forever. For instance, if a coalition of earth and Youkai together tried opposing them, or if Yukari truly got everyone and everything in Gensokyo today to pull it off, they'd probably succeed. Anyway, point is, the impurity workaround isn't sustainable, so eyes have turned to Gensokyo. Of course, not to claim the land for themselves as that probably won't and can't work anymore, but to transform the running foundation of their own society into something equally as fantastical. They're gathering data on Gensokyo in order to create their own version of it, to exist in a world where imagination can beget everything, for indeed if that could be so, fear of impurity would surely altogether vanish with nothing but a thought- 'I wish it so', 'I think it so'.
Unfortunately, it's impossible. The Lunarians are fated to succumb to impurity and collapse. Their pride will kill them all.

I really enjoy all the shot types and shot mixing but i'm extremely upset Toyohime is here, at least its not Yorihime.

Unironically, kinda agree. Especially as ZUN never made a map. I'm still confused as to where the various temples are relative to one another and the Human Village. At least with stuff like Former Hell, Hell, Yuyuko's place, the Animal Realm, and the various dimensions are stacked on top of one another, it is that they are pretty much different lands and dimensions. But physical places like Shining Needle Castle, Scarlet Devil Manor, and now the pyramid just have to stick around. Genso is starting to become incredibly crowded and Euclidean. I get that Genso is supposed to be huge and open enough you can slot in anything. It is non-Euclidean on purpose to an extent. But ZUN doesn't make DISTRICTS relative to another. Barring some exceptions, everything is independent from one another, creating its own cultures, rules, and leaders. It works for something like the Animal Realm or the Lunarians, people that are so distinct and alien from normal Genso happenings. But when you are purposely clashing these things together, such as the various religious temples or the Dream World that connects Genso to the Lunar Capitol and its own denizens leaking into reality, you really have to start figuring where everything is.
Most conflict is, at its heart, an issue of space. From either needing more land or not liking your neighbor for whatever reason, to acknowledge that you cannot live with them is to acknowledge that you cannot leave them alone. Hence why most Incidents revolve around something fucking up the literal ecosystem of Genso. Something huge and widespread that it can't be ignored. This also means that you can't actually be independent from one another. If a nuclear accident happened in Utah, the US can't just brush it aside as "well, that's just Utah". But so much of plots that happen in Genso itself (and not an entire 'nother universe) treat themselves on the same severity as something like the Lunar Invasion of LoLK. Where these various CITY-STATES of Genso at this point can't be handwaved so easily, especially if they have permanent effects on the world such as an entire ass pyramid raising itself from the ground.

There are limits on how much you can call back on and ZUN likes to keep his cast of characters around. I get it. But it would be nice if I can appreciate the stakes of something if there's places and districts I know is threatened by New Thing of the Week. Or that there are other communities than the ONE Human Village that this huge ass nation entirely relies on.

I'm very certain it isn't actually supposed to be non-Euclidean. There's no point in having a physical barrier between Genso and the Outside World if there isn't an endpoint to it. It is very physically set, places are places. And the scale of Genso is so huge but unconquered by human or even yokai civilization, it isn't like ZUN can't get away with making these city-states. But so many conflicts, especially in the sidegames and mangas, are so congested around certain points and threatens them in particular, it makes the world feel unnaturally small. FW is a good start for gen 4, between CDS and FW, it seem ZUN have finally decided to dive deeper into the past of Gensokyo, or even the past before Gensokyo. FW showed us more about the Lunarian immigration to the Moon and how there are gods who chose to stay on the Earth and human instead

Finally got to play through the game, my opinion is that it's still hard as balls but all the resources you get from pyramids make it feel less hopeless overall. Also Yorihime is even more of a bitch than I thought, but I loved the spell card where you use her drrrop-l-ets as a shield. Ariya having many reasons for the HSiFS shots to be useufl was funny too.
Also I failed to beat Normal even with all 5 continues but yay I got a 1cc on Easy! I'm still not THAT bad yet!
Ah yeah and as for the music, it's actually great how Yuiman and Ariya's themes feel less energetic and more kind of sad given their lore, even though I prefer "fuck yeah this is the final boss" themes like Junko's and Keiki's. I could see them getting great vocal arranges too.
Now onto looking for the .bgm file and a replay of extra because holy shit I don't think I'm doing this any time soon.
