Can't pick where you're gonna live, someone might decide where you die. Idk. Lot of benefits even for a grunt with no prospects, pretty much their only option. My uncle served and it caused a huge strain on his family to the point he divorced his wife (also in the military), and it caused this awful situation where he had to follow his bitch of an ex-wife around because she had the kids. I guess everyone has to do that who's divorced, but with the added stress of having to coordinate a big move with her every couple of years. That wasn't too good.
>don't want to have kids and just bang hookers?
No downsides for you then, champ. Go get em.

FREE healthcare for life, be set in 20 years time from enlistment off a pension, and no one is really going to war again in the first world so it's gonna be easy street. I'd say those are good enough.

Americans: none, the odds of being randomly shot are similar in the military or any American school or public place

This avenue isn't as granted as it used to be. Some departments have some serious requirements that a grunt can't meet. It's also an issue of changing demos of a lot of police forces. Less and less military guys become cops, so they're less inclined to prefer them. I'm mainly talking about the police forces people want to join, rich, white, and low crime departments, who often have prior policing experience policies. Still can join some hick town or fucked city immediately, but so can jimbob or jamal.

Idk but let me tell you the biggest upside: fast-tracking you into being an airline pilot for a major carrier, provided you joined the Air Force as an officer and flew a bunch.
Major airline carriers have wet dreams every night about Air Force retirees wanting to fly 777s for them.

Depends what you do. My friend who was in the Navy for 10 years is fine physically because all he did was work in base medical centers. Mostly just drew blood, did paperwork, and called people prior to appointments. 10 years of that didn't mess him up.

You will be potentially risking your life for a country and politicians that hate you and that would never send their own children into the military unless it's a nepo office position.

You will be wasting years of your life in a position that makes below industry average for any skilled entry job. You will be lacking years of experience making your civilian life harder after you leave the military. People and civilian companies will think less of you (at least in Europe). You will be discriminated against in job offers.

You will potentially see real action that will fuck your head up. You will potentially get disfigured or crippled. You will suffer from horrible ajd harsh training and conditions. You will suffer from insane boredom afterwards if you don't see action. You will be made fun of online. You will probably fuck up your back or knees before you hit 30.

If you're a disagreeable person that hates taking orders from authority and being told what to do? Think about it, you have no choice or freedom. It's not a job you can just quit and walk away from. It's not a friendship you can end. It's basically a prison sentence where you have to be a cuck under fear of prison.

dried food, military early morning marching buefore breakfask 3km run, 4 am wake ups 6 p.m miltary curfu and forced sleep protocol
having to iron your uniform every fucking morning
3 minute showers ( yes its that butal)
having to do push ups because some tubby fat bastard didn't finish under 30 min 3km run)
and this is all before breakfast
>not allowed to see special forces even at breakfast have to clear out before they get there. (you literally can be arrested by millitary police by acciently eyeballing one on accient.

females and males have different barracks
and different dress codes
if your a private everyone calls you "new meat".
you get called names by NGOs (non commioned officers)
privates get dumb jobs like peeling potatos if your last to mess hall.
>random yelling drilll sagant for a ironed crease in the wrong part (yes they made one priovate iron all his uniform naked in the wind because he didn't make the crease visable to- the drill sarget so i0t was nude in the freezing wind)
in boot camp there is a random invasion in the camp and everyone gets hit bny random bean bag

in boot camp you speand two weeks getting woken up at random and droped in the middle of the forest assume all are hostile and return back to the barracks without being seen. with 300 random recruits looking for you and keeping squad mates alive.
getting lost on purpose so other new recurits can find you to haul your ass to the medics tent

randomly attacking dummyus pretending they are terrorists without shooting a single civilian dummy in under 7 mins clearing the whole house of hostiles.

mag dump an entire rifes bullets on a singel dummy without missing under 30 seconds
with bolt action rifles (old ww1 rifles btw for basics).

storing ammo and weapon seperately after each fire lesson.

waking up officers for inspection at 3am

forced pushups for idoits who don't salute a officer

that was the annogying shit.

You will be lacking years of experience making your civilian life harder after you leave the military. People and civilian companies will think less of you (at least in Europe). You will be discriminated against in job offers.

This isn't true if you pick the right military job. The military is a good way to learn a trade that otherwise might be hard to enter, and earn a good wage while training for the trade with also a lot of perks for housing healthcare etc. The main drawback being you don't get to decide where you do it, and that you must return your service a number of years after becoming qualified before you can get out again and use your skill in civi street

I spent 5 years as a young guy in the infantry and I can say while that was a big experience in my life that you can't get elsewhere, don't do it if you are clever enough for more. Although I'm pretty sure that military experience has got me jobs since more than it has closed them to me, and the experience does you well for certain things in your work ethic potentially leadership etc they were still entry level unskilled jobs until I got going in the profession I got into. Look instead at the military as something to use for the training and perks. Look at it like going to university, pick a good trade with good prospect for your later life. Use it and don't let it use you too much, and don't get caught up in the 18 year old bullshit that it's somehow better to do the hardest jobs and be at the arse end of it.

I'm actually considering going back in after a long time to reskill into a technical trade this time with the airforce. I'm just a bit worried these days to drag my wife and a couple of babies around different bases away from her family while doing it

>provided you joined the Air Force as an officer and flew a bunch.
Navy and USMC also fly jets. Naval Aviators are preferred by some of the airlines, mostly Southwest and Delta.

In general after you get the 750 for mil-atp you're gtg if you were in any jet, inline thrust isn't considered a dealbreaker. If you were really committed to the air force route the usual path is Air Guard for a refueller etc and then after the 2 years of post- school unit seasoning you go airlines. Kind of a bitch though since there aren't a lot of guard refueling wings near major hubs so you'll probably end up a regional Capt rather than a long haul FO. Overall the best approach if you're just trying to use your mil time to get into the airlines.

Likelihood of being sexually harassed/assaulted, whether you're male or female.
High likelihood of being forced to work with hazardous chemicals without proper safety equipment, the long term health problems you develop as a result will probably not be covered by the VA.
80% of women into military guys either want a one night stand or are gold diggers.
Possibility of losing a limb and/or waking up in the middle of the night with PTSD episodes for the rest of your life.
Possibility of getting hurt/killed because of someone else's incompetence (or malice).

Yeah and that's likely to be the only time that people in the military who aren't infantry are liable to eat the things unless they decide to go down to the commissary and lay down 12 bucks for the privilege, was for me and most of the folks i talked to.

It's hard to put into words how bad the office culture is. I have never been in an organisation with more pissy entitled bitches playing office politics and it's made worse by the fact that anyone competent has a plan that involves them eventually leaving while the incompetent just stick around until they get promoted by inertia.

My signal to leave was when I looked around and saw that most of the good guys had left and my command structure had become an unironic nazi and a badly divorced dude with a drinking problem.

I hear a lot of police forces try to limit military applicants. There's a differently mentality required for policing and a lot more focus these days on cops being backup social services and mental hospital security.

>It's easy to save money on deployments and if you can resist blowing it all that makes a good chunk of cash to take with you when you leave.

No long term career, poverty, social isolation, permanent injury, unemployment, substance abuse, suicide

In my county the risk is 23 times greater for veterans to suffer any one of these, five times higher to suffer more than three at the same time.

The rate of sexual assault against service people is about the same as in prison, they can't even work out even an approximate number, martial courts illegaly suppress reporting.

And that's in peace time, when few soldiers are seeing close combat and nobody is seeing near peer conflict. In wartime a third of enlisted personele would probably die within two years, on top of everything else

And people say the pay is good, but it just isn't.
Because in terms of hours worked, you're clocked on 10,12,16, 24 hours a day. The hourly salary isn't even minimum wage, you might as well work 12 hour days at McDonald's.
The army is for some reason allowed to lie about salaries, by counting allowances they pay you, for things which are mandatory, as salary.
If I'm paid $100 on Monday but forced to buy a $10 uniform, my salary is $90.
If I'm paid $90 and given a free shirt, my salary is still $90. If I'm paid 100 and given a 10$ allowance to buy a 20 shirt, I still leave work with only 90$.

And there are also benefits that in the US many employees get even in low paid jobs which are notably lacking in the army. So insurance, if your injured in the army your can't claim private insurance on that, and you can't sue the army like you would any other employer. So if you're on base, and some retard drops a crate of MRE on your foot, you're kind of fucked. That's why the US army is famous for producing wounded vets. Many were just injured in industrial accidents on bases.

And then you consider bills you might be paying pack home even when deployed, notably child support, interest on debts, student loans. And that would be multiplied by every year you're employed by the army. Yes you could use your army salary to pay off those debts but again, realistically you're not coming out with much money.

And then there are expenses troops incur out of pocket. Overprice alcohol, prostitution, buying your own sunglasses, gloves, helmet liners, upgrading your own equipment. And often either you spend four years in second hand, inadequate uniform, or pay a cartel price for army approved suppliers, the same scam private schools run with their uniform

Honestly just the complete dice roll on if your superiors are halfway decent human beings or not. If they are, you'll have a fairly decent time no matter where you go or what job you have. If they're retarded mongoloids or slimy spineless eval-chasers, you are completely and utterly fucked with zero recourse until either you or they leave the unit. I cannot emphasize enough just how shitty and mindbreaking it is to work for people who treat you like shit and also have a lot more legal power over you than your average civilian manager.

>What are the biggest downsides of joining the military?
Mutilation or death.
Having to kill someone who is not a fighter or is wounded because you were ordered to or having to see such things and keep silent and becoming dammed.
Seeing so much death you no longer value human life or your own.
Nighmares in your 40s so bad you can't get rem sleep
Or you might end up sittinng in a chair in a basement sorting bolts.
Looking your sight and hearing and living in darkness and silence.
Loosing your sexual organs and beoming a eunch.
Burn injuries and graffts turning you into a monster doped up on pain meds forever.
Paralysis from the waist or neck down
Cancer.
Becoming an adrealine junkie to keeps starting rows and winds up sittng under an underpass
Hitting your mid 30s and getting discharged and not being able to even handle paying bills or working retail
Roll that dice.

Completely untrue. In fact companies accross Europe generally view ex service people as completely normal. Most major European nations had mass conscription up to the late 80s. Most people have fathers who were in.

Its Americans who are derranged fantasists about the military
