>>63931362 (OP)Can't pick where you're gonna live, someone might decide where you die. Idk. Lot of benefits even for a grunt with no prospects, pretty much their only option. My uncle served and it caused a huge strain on his family to the point he divorced his wife (also in the military), and it caused this awful situation where he had to follow his bitch of an ex-wife around because she had the kids. I guess everyone has to do that who's divorced, but with the added stress of having to coordinate a big move with her every couple of years. That wasn't too good.

It's also an issue of changing demos of a lot of police forces. Less and less military guys become cops, so they're less inclined to prefer them. You will be lacking years of experience making your civilian life harder after you leave the military. People and civilian companies will think less of you (at least in Europe). You will be discriminated against in job offers. This isn't true if you pick the right military job. The military is a good way to learn a trade that otherwise might be hard to enter, and earn a good wage while training for the trade with also a lot of perks for housing healthcare etc. The main drawback being you don't get to decide where you do it, and that you must return your service a number of years after becoming qualified before you can get out again and use your skill in civi street
I spent 5 years as a young guy in the infantry and I can say while that was a big experience in my life that you can't get elsewhere, don't do it if you are clever enough for more. Although I'm pretty sure that military experience has got me jobs since more than it has closed them to me, and the experience does you well for certain things in your work ethic potentially leadership etc they were still entry level unskilled jobs until I got going in the profession I got into. Look instead at the military as something to use for the training and perks. Look at it like going to university, pick a good trade with good prospect for your later life. Use it and don't let it use you too much, and don't get caught up in the 18 year old bullshit that it's somehow better to do the hardest jobs and be at the arse end of it.
I'm actually considering going back in after a long time to reskill into a technical trade this time with the airforce. I'm just a bit worried these days to drag my wife and a couple of babies around different bases away from her family while doing it

In general after you get the 750 for mil-atp you're gtg if you were in any jet, inline thrust isn't considered a dealbreaker. If you were really committed to the air force route the usual path is Air Guard for a refueller etc and then after the 2 years of post- school unit seasoning you go airlines. Kind of a bitch though since there aren't a lot of guard refueling wings near major hubs so you'll probably end up a regional Capt rather than a long haul FO. Overall the best approach if you're just trying to use your mil time to get into the airlines.

Still would, she's a billionaire, wish she did something more vanilla
No long term career, poverty, social isolation, permanent injury, unemployment, substance abuse, suicide
In my county the risk is 23 times greater for veterans to suffer any one of these, five times higher to suffer more than three at the same time.
The rate of sexual assault against service people is about the same as in prison, they can't even work out even an approximate number, martial courts illegaly suppress reporting.
And that's in peace time, when few soldiers are seeing close combat and nobody is seeing near peer conflict. In wartime a third of enlisted personele would probably die within two years, on top of everything else
Also for those reading, I've personally been banned three times from /k/ for discouraging people enlisting.
/meg/ is 100% a shill thread that someone is paid USD to protect. Try it yourself, see for yourself. You're not allowed to bash the US army on /k/.
>>63931362 (OP)>What are the biggest downsides of joining the military? You will be force to die in some desert shithole for Israel.
And people say the pay is good, but it just isn't.
Because in terms of hours worked, you're clocked on 10,12,16, 24 hours a day. The hourly salary isn't even minimum wage, you might as well work 12 hour days at McDonald's.
The army is for some reason allowed to lie about salaries, by counting allowances they pay you, for things which are mandatory, as salary.
If I'm paid $100 on Monday but forced to buy a $10 uniform, my salary is $90.
If I'm paid $90 and given a free shirt, my salary is still $90. If I'm paid 100 and given a 10$ allowance to buy a 20 shirt, I still leave work with only 90$.
And there are also benefits that in the US many employees get even in low paid jobs which are notably lacking in the army. So insurance, if your injured in the army your can't claim private insurance on that, and you can't sue the army like you would any other employer. So if you're on base, and some retard drops a crate of MRE on your foot, you're kind of fucked. That's why the US army is famous for producing wounded vets. Many were just injured in industrial accidents on bases.
And then you consider bills you might be paying pack home even when deployed, notably child support, interest on debts, student loans. And that would be multiplied by every year you're employed by the army. Yes you could use your army salary to pay off those debts but again, realistically you're not coming out with much money.
And then there are expenses troops incur out of pocket. Overprice alcohol, prostitution, buying your own sunglasses, gloves, helmet liners, upgrading your own equipment. And often either you spend four years in second hand, inadequate uniform, or pay a cartel price for army approved suppliers, the same scam private schools run with their uniform
